So I cheat.. I don't find the shortest tooth. I begin next to the double teeth on the chain (the 2 on the same side) and lightly grind the first tooth. As I go around the chain, if there are any that don't grind, I take note and finish the whole side of the chain. Then I adjust the backstop just a hint more and make another pass. I found this to be faster and more accurate than trying to mic all the teeth.
I couldn't tell if you were sharpening stihl chains or not off of your saws and if so your video doesn't say what angles you're using, I know this is a old video but I'm hoping maybe you'll see it and comment on what angles you used most of the videos on UA-cam with the oregon grinders they show you how to grind Oregon chain not stihl and all my saws are Stihl chainsaws with stihl chains yet none of the videos tell anybody the angles for there chains. I keep seeing 60/30/0 thrown around on some old posted forums but no definitive answer but I thought for sure with stihl chain especially the full comp you were supposed to use minus and plus 10 degree angle not Zero so I'm confused.
It's not complicated. The top setting is ZERO and lower angle is 30 degrees. That's for every Stihl chain I have sharpened. Then set your depth of grind.
@@foothillstrailhiker2426 you mean the chain holder angle is 30 degrees tilt 0? Because I know the grinding wheel can't be set at zero you'd be cutting your teeth straight down 😂 I heard it is 60 on the grinder motor angle. Then 30 for chain angle and 0 tilt.
nice video Andrew,i enjoyed it too...I also like that new sharpener.......great info job well done......see you on the next one.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ray

Seems like it'd take longer to make multiple passes that just finding the shortest cutter before hand
