I played this when I was 9 years old, when it first came out. It wasn't my first Sierra game, but definitely my favorite series. I still have the box (with the 3D relief pattern) and the floppies (with the original velvety slipcovers). It was one of the first games my parents ever bought me. I was sick, and on the way back from the doctor's, my mom bought me this game to make me happy. I spent a week-long sick leave just playing this and pretending to still be too sick to go to school, well after the illness had gone away. I must've played through this game a few dozen times since then.
Is it bad that I'm rewatching this LP for a third time? There's something so nice about the way these are done; its perfect for a rainy day like this. Grab some tea, snuggle up with a quilt...
I love this series for all the fantasy atmosphere, hero-ing and humor. An obvious play on words right at the beginning: Spielburg can be considered a reference to Spielberg, but it also literally translates as "game-town" or "play-town".
Wow, nice trick with the + key. I was always the thief since he was the only one that could have all attributes in the beginning. Now I find out I could have been anyone. Makes me want to go out and relive some old days of being 10. Thanks for posting
As someone who was born in the 80's and who was introduced to several roleplaying'esque games in the 90's, I am familiar with both Hero Quest (the boardgame, which to this I have), and Hero's Quest (this title). I always liked the way it was somehow between Hero Quest and Dungeons&Dragons. It was like those many other Sierra adventure games, but with some roleplaying elements thrown into it. Really a masterpiece in game design!
Thank you for well done videos, i really like that you read the texts because it gives time to everybody to read and understand the story and you can feel like if you were playing. Thank you!!!!
You are correct. I just didn't do that because then you don't get a sword and shield. I suppose it doesn't particularly matter, since a fully-developed character can defeat any monster with just a dagger, but doesn't he look so much more... Heroic with the sword and shield? FINALLY! It's about time! I've been waiting for years. Thanks!
Thanks. :) There's actually a whole fan-based community around point-and-click games. If you go to the homepage for Adventure Game Studio, you'll find a bunch of free games there (which of course vary wildly in quality, but that's part of the fun).
And, oh yes, I'm numbering and posting the videos in the order of playing, so although you can watch them in whatever order you like, it'll probably make the most sense if you watch them in the posted order. Thanks for watching!
This is such a great game. My father bought it back in 1990 when we got our first computer. As I was born in '86 and from Holland I didn't know english, but my father wrote down some of the basic commands of the game (run, look at, ask about, search body etc) and that's how I learned my English really. I loved this game, but it was difficult for a 5 year old. So a couple of years ago I installed the original game (EGA version) again and figured out what to do with Antwerp and Baba Yaga and so on.
I have the original of this game, which was Hero's quest, but then when my brother wanted to get all of the games for Quest For Glory. He had gotten the first four games on one disc, Sort of anniversary collection I believe, then he got the fifth later on. Just recently last Christmas I believe it was, my brother gave me all of his Quest For Glory games for Christmas, which I liked, because I have always loved these games, but I'm looking forward to seeing your walkthroughs of this.
QFG always had a penchant for foreign wordplay (like the welcome sign at Erasmus' house which we'll hopefully see later in this LP). I didn't realize the pun on "Spielburg," but now that you mention it, I think I'll mention it in the next video. Thanks!
I think I'll look up the box and install it again this weekend. What a great game! The only thing I don't like about the game are the 'no turning back' points. For example when you saved your game sitting on the barstool with a glass of Dragon's Breath in your hand.. Or when you just cut up the Spirea to take the seed. Then you were screwed! Thanks for making these great video's it brought back so many great memories! Cheers!
I know! I HATE having to miss out on things because of artificial limitations imposed on the player. I played this for years before learning about this trick. Then again, you could say that you played the game the "right" way, since this trick is technically a cheat. The limitation exists for a reason--it's a way of adding replay value so that people can be inspired to play the game again in a different way. Still, I'd rather just have a jack-of-all-trades character. Variety is good!
Thanks for the compliment. :) I'm not a member of SA; never was. The LP name originated there, but since then it's broadened out into a more general community. I'm currently doing QFG2, but don't plan on doing the rest of the series.
What the... You mean to tell me that after all this time I've been playing the game without ever using stealth, I could've just hit the plus and minus buttons to get all the skills!? I feel cheated!
These are great, I just found your channel. Did you post this on SA? I know its long, but a run through the rest of the series would be great. (not sure if you have that planned.)
4 was excellent, but 2 always had a special place in my heart. I tend to like the desert for some strange reason. The whole series is basically a win, though.
that stats trick is neat. back in the day I just started without magic, but in QFG2, you can wish for magic at some point, after defeating the elementals I think.
That was actually common in early game studios Sierra, Origin, Sir Tech and so onoften had staff do cameos in the games,in Ultima V you can find and talk to a virtual version of Chris Roberts(Wing Commander, Freelancer), Worlds of Ultima 2 Martian Dreams had Warren Spector, Jagged Alliance had a ton of Sir Tech staff in it, there were more examples but they allude me right now.
I like the way you say "Scorpion." Anyay, mind if I ask what "Lets Play" is? I've seen it around on a lot of videos looking for a particular childhood memory, and really enjoy the commentary. This is my very first video of yours; should I watch these in the orders of your having posted them?
Probably the first video-game in which you can actually multi-class (if you spend the talent points correctly). Kinda wish WoW had more roleplaying objectives like this game does (for this game actually requires someone to think outside the combat box to actually beat it).
"Skor-pee-awn" as opposed to "skor-pee-uhn"? I tend to emphasize the last syllable of long words for some reason I guess. Most people pronounce the last syllable of "ambulance" as "luns," and I've been mocked for pronouncing it "lans." "Let's Play" is a fairly loose-knit community of people making documentaries of playing through a video game for others to watch. It has its roots in the Something Awful website, and was popularized by DeceasedCrab and his LP of the game "La Mulana."
You can also start a decent all round character, by choosing a thief and add parry and magic points. I didn't know that one "cheat" though. That is pretty cool.
For those that don't understand DosBox or just don't want to be bothered with it you can play QFG 1-3 on Gametap with their "classic" membership. It's about $5 a mont and lets you play these games in your browser even on a 64-bit system. I've noticed a few bugs in QFGIII but none in the first two, they work fine. I have the "collection" on disc but can only get it working on dosbox, it won't work on my 64-bit Windows 7.
I've played the remake; the graphics in this version are much better. The remake has 256-color graphics so you can't see the transitions between pixels as clearly.
Please feel free; just because someone else has already LPed the game, that doesn't mean nobody else can. The game works fine in DOSBox; if you're not getting any sound, it's probably either a DOSBox setting, or you need to run the game's INSTALL program.
Oi ... I played loads of Sierra/Westwood/Lucasarts point-and-click adventures when I was a kid, but somehow I've never heard of Hero's Quest (or Quest for Glory). I did play Hero Quest though, which was also fun ... Not in the least because the box contained groovy plastic zombies. =0p
I didn't know that about the "let's play" community. I did notice that people have been doing the same thing under the name "playthrough". Also, "speedruns" usually show the game completed as quick as possible. I was there. I witnessed the original :P
Nice trick with the +1, but do you score points for completing tasks using skills from a different role? (for example, casting fetch to get the ring from the tree, versus climbing the tree, versus throwing rocks at it)Would you be able to get all 500 points? Just wondering because that might be a consideration for some.
No matter what skills you have, the points which you can get are fixed to the character type which you choose. So, for example, the fighter HAS to do the fighter-y things to get the full 500 points, and therefore you would miss some points if you used alternate solutions. However, no matter which skills you choose, you can always get the full 500 points since each character starts off with enough base skills to do all the special things they need to get their batch of points.
LateBlt Thanks for the response. Im curious then, what is the benefit from getting all skills if you do not plan to use them to complete tasks? Just for killing monsters? Does it make it easier to get silver/gold? I can understand the desire to have a well balanced character, but if the skills will be ultimately go unused it seems a bit superfluous. Wouldn't it be more useful in the long run to raise some of the primary stats for your specific role? The less times you have to type "Throw dagger" to get to max skill-points, the better, right? edit: Out of curiosity, would using thief skills as a fighter prevent becoming a Paladin in the later games after importing your character?
Amra Not all the actions worth doing in the game earn points. For example, in this Let's Play, even though my character is nominally a fighter, I show how to get into the Thieves' Guild and the two break-in houses in the town, which would not be possible without thief skills. Although I got no points for doing so (you only get points for doing this if your character is a thief), it can still be fun to do. Likewise, knowing and being able to use magic is sometimes useful even if you don't get points for doing so. There are certain actions in Quest For Glory 2 which prevent the fighter from becoming a paladin at the end of the game. One of these is, I believe, breaking into the house in Shapeir. I think that my doing this was the reason why I failed to become a paladin at the end of that Let's Play.
nice, thanks. The "trick" does not look like a bug at all. I think it is on purpose. also I know that someone can complete the game without any stealth. I do not know if it can be completed without any magic or pick locks.

I think the real answer as to why I did that was that I wanted to get maximum usage out of the game, and run through it three times with the class-specific solutions. This may be why I never played sports.
So would you normally get a "jack of all trades" type character when you play through these games, or do you try to stick to one "class"? I never, ever put skill points into anything that a fighter, thief, or magic user couldn't do, but I think that might accurately place me in the "anal" category. Plus, when I was 14 or so and playing these games, I did have enough time to run through them with each character class.
@WhiteMageMentality Same. I think this is my, what, fifth time on this? Granted, I'm at work leveling up my Death Knight on warcraft right now, but still.
Only the very first sierra game were the best and still are. Leasuire suit Larry 1 to 3, space quest 1 to 3, kings quest 1 to 4, heroes quest 1 and 2 only
It's 2019 and I suddenly want to watch these videos again :)

I never get tired of rewatching this series.
Congratulations, you've discovered the first of over 9000 puns throughout the series.

About to watch this let play for the third time now! :) LateBlt you're the man!
This is such a great game. My father bought it back in 1990 when we got our first computer. I miss you Lping dude, my style and game selection came from you three years ago.
yuss

So I about 7.5 minutes in and this is already amazing! Lucahjin suggested you, and I am quite pleased.

ty for bringing back memories. wish they would make more point and click games again, they are grat fun. keep up the good work :)
I watch these all the time.
I so enjoy your LPs. :)
You and hercrabbiness are the reason I finally got brave enough to do my own LP.
This is one of the first games I ever played as a lad of 7 or 8. Good memories. I even managed to beat the Mage's Maze.
I know! I HATE having to miss out on things because of artificial limitations imposed on the player. I played this for years before learning about this trick. Then again, you could say that you played the game the "right" way, since this trick is technically a cheat. Hey man great videos, i remember play all these in my granmdas basement on her old compaq p1!
You have a good sheriff's voice.
These are great, I just found your channel. Did you post this on SA? I know its long, but a run through the rest of the series would be great. (not sure if you have that planned.)
Great videos indeed, all of the parts are greatly explained/done cheers for the LP mate! *Bid LateBlt a nice day!*
4 was excellent, but 2 always had a special place in my heart. I tend to like the desert for some strange reason. The whole series is basically a win, though.
6:50 - 6:55
Best part of the whole LP. XD
+MSOGameShow One of the best xD There's other akward moments that made me laugh :D
"...reap the fruit of your loins..." Yeah Im definately going to watch this now :)
There's a new game coming, from the same creators. I hope they put "cameos" in there for nosalgia :) Antwerp is the highlight of this game.
Of QG1--a lesson I learned the hard way was "Never listen to the haunted graveyard theme before going to bed."
that stats trick is neat. back in the day I just started without magic, but in QFG2, you can wish for magic at some point, after defeating the elementals I think.
I'm pretty sure this was the first computer/video game I ever played. Was wayyyy too young to know what the hell I was doing though.

Anyay, mind if I ask what "Lets Play" is?
I've seen it around on a lot of videos looking for a particular childhood memory, and really enjoy the commentary.

Probably the first video-game in which you can actually multi-class (if you spend the talent points correctly). Kinda wish WoW had more roleplaying objectives like this game does (for this game actually requires someone to think outside the combat box to actually beat it).
I used one of the three wishes you get in Quest for Glory 2 to get points in Magic there. :-)

Reap that loin fruit!!
This was my favourite game at the time.
I just started with the theif in order to get all skills.

Wish you'd come back. Your commentary is fantastic
indeed. I think he may be the first let's play I ever watched. (I had watched speed runs before him tho)
You're very welcome, I'm glad you liked it! :D
lolz, funny how he says "Scorpi-On."
I've played the remake; the graphics in this version are much better. The remake has 256-color graphics so you can't see the transitions between pixels as clearly.

Went to see if I left a comment on my old account, but don't see one. I believe this was my first let's play
Reap the fruits of his loins?!? BWahahahahahahaaaaa! Sorry. Couldn't resist. :D
Reap the fruit of his loins!! Hah!! 😆😂🤣
So much nostalgia!
Fruit of his loins? Wtf xD That's awesome.
QFG creators launching a new game! Looks pretty neat. Look up "Hero U" online...currently, they're fundraising...
:) that's great hun, ty very much, i'll go take a look now.
I Loved this game!! I managed to get 509/500 points the one time, not sure if it was a bug or an extra cherry but I think i was a hero lol :)
I didn't know that about the "let's play" community. I did notice that people have been doing the same thing under the name "playthrough".
Also, "speedruns" usually show the game completed as quick as possible.
I was there. I witnessed the original :P
this may have been my first let's play
Oh well, there are lots of people who haven't played Freddy Pharkas either. :)
I played Hero Quest for about 37 seconds. It was fun, yah.
I guess if you just want to get through the game with a minimum of effort, then yes, you don't need the extra skills, but I prefer being able to do everything; I don't really like being limited by arbitrary restrictions. Certainly, I think the game is "supposed" to be played in such a way that each character type sticks to their own particular role, but I never really liked playing the game that way. I prefer being able to do everything. It's not just about getting all the points. If the player doesn't want to use the extra skills, they don't have to, but I prefer having the option of using them because sometimes they make certain situations easier.
Ah, the memories!
LOVED IT
@echolake85
I'm back at this video again, to use it as an example on a forum about how to be thorough in LPs, and I just turned the captions on.
Google says he's saying, "Score Pee On."
I miss these games, I was so foolish not to keep these old games! I had the original copy too...oh well, should've kept on playing and maybe sell it on EBay~! :)
Just as in real life, I try to be able to do everything. I really wouldn't want to limit myself just because I decided "I only want to do things this way."
Nothing like some good old dos games; dare I say abandonware
Then he wouldn't have a sword. And also, I believe that would preclude the possibility of joining the EOF in the next game.
razzledazzlerootbeer
One day I dream of someone recreating these games in a full 3d game like elderscrols oblivion engine
@WhiteMageMentality I don't think it's bad, but then, I wouldn't... I'm flattered that you find them worth watching again. :)
A bit late but it also comes with both the orginal text phaser based EGA version of QFG1 and the offical VGA remake which was nice, just wished GOG would of put a shortcut for the EGA version with the rest of them instead of burying it in a folder in the start menu. hopefully when they upgrade it to the 2.0 installer they correct that.
I don't see how this is going to help my writing career Prof.
Was that the Star Trek: TNG theme in the intro?
I wish I had your cool voice, my LP's I sound.. ahhh... non-serious.
Hey did you ever figure out how to do this? I'm getting an install error when I install it using DosBox =\

You voice reminds me of Steve Blum's. :D
I think I'm the only 90's kid who has played this game.
if you want to have all skills pick thief
@WhiteMageMentality
Same. I think this is my, what, fifth time on this?
Granted, I'm at work leveling up my Death Knight on warcraft right now, but still.
whats the game called?!?
You can now buy this with the other 4 Quest for Glories on gog.com for 10 bucks.
Scor PEON!!
@WhiteMageMentality I do the same thing. This, QfG2, and hercrabbiness' Laura Bow
Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption
Sorry for the late reply, forgot to check this account.
Only the very first sierra game were the best and still are. Leasuire suit Larry 1 to 3, space quest 1 to 3, kings quest 1 to 4, heroes quest 1 and 2 only
QFG FTFW. I thought 4 was my favorite IMO.
ha yeah Hero Quest we play the boardgame =) never played the video game
Nah, it just helps to watch the video. ;)
Great LP time to subscribe to LateBlt
Why was the game renamed?
14 year bump
