I don't remember him ever saying this "This is not metal, its not THAT heavy" thing until just after he released You Are Not Alone, and then after that i suddenly heard him mention it in this and one other interview, and then also at the live show i saw when he toured for YANA. I also don't have a recording of the show i saw him at in seattle, but im pretty sure i remember him saying "Maybe one day i will make some metal" or something like that. Then of course his most recent album, God Is Partying, is definitely metal in my opinion, some parts may stay more rock/punk/ballad oriented, but the guitar tones and riffs at times are inarguably a fusion of various metal genres. I believe he's also mentioned that recording for God Is Partying had been underway since around the time he released YANA, maybe even before. YANA ws also recorded in a slight rush from what i remember, i think he mentions this while talking about how the inspirational speeches on the album were a late addition suggested by management that they all felt helped complete the album. Add to this the fact that the japanese bonus track "Creation of Sound" contains all the hallmarks of tracks off God is Partying, starting with its spooky dissonant cinematic intro, then its mid-tempo epic feel, even more clearly occult lyrics, and other lyrical themes from GiP. It seems he either intentionally recorded these as some kind of pair, or at the very least was planning this move towards metal for a decent amount of time. The journal releases alongside YANA were certainly strange too and all seem to point to similar conclusions, while also appearing to be fabricated lol. TBH I could ramble down this rabbithole all day and night so i'll randomly ap it here 😅
God what an amazing interview. A lot of thoughts he conveyed were ideas I've had for years but it feels so good to hear them in his own words and out loud instead of in my own head.
Lead into gold! I heard a few hints at alchemy in the song "Music is Worth Living For". And here it is again. If you dont know that's the initial literal goal of alchemy is to turn lead into gold, but there is also a people-building side to it. Knowing what ive learned about Andrew in a short time, that could mean everything behind his motivation, or just a couple of nuggets he's thrown out to fuck with people. But honestly it means both things. He IS about alchemy, and yet he IS fucking with you by throwing it out there. Thats the brilliance of this man. A simple message brought to as complicatedly or as simple as you want it. A better entertainer you will be hardpressed to find. Party hard, dude!
What an incredibly cool guy. What he said about metal was awesome to hear because I remember seeing him with 'party hard' all those years ago and thinking to myself, "I wonder if this dude likes metal cos he looks metal as fuck, but his music isn't heavy' and I just got my answer! :D
what an absolutely awesome bloke, always was a fan of his music but iv'e only recently taken the time to learn some of his history. Fascinating character, incredible talent.
NYPATRIOT most people that get jacked in the first place don’t just stop taking care of themselves.. not sure what is surprising. 10 years and he’s still in shape? You see people all the time are that built up and ripped, who don’t then just lose all of their muscles within a decade
I know jimmy coup was out of the band at that point and then all the steev mike stuff went down and stopped the third album...i think that jimmy coup had a lot do with the steev mike stuff and now that it seems like those issues may have been settled, i wouldnt doubt if that has allowed andrew wk to go back and legally work on those 2005 songs before jimmy coup was on the outs
"I am a person. I'm a human being. And we earn the right to have a full spectrum of attitudes and emotions" i like this guy
It is a great quote.
Andrew WK is such a rad dude. I’m stoked he’s back in action!
The crime of the century is that Andrew W.K. is not as well known as he should be. What an awesome man. I wish I was more like him.
I think I want to buy this album
Andrew is awesome.

He's carrying invisible suitcases!
So , by that you mean he thinks his lats are bigger than they are.
Which songs go back to 2005? I hate it when something fascinating like that is mentioned in an interview, but the specific song(s) aren't mentioned.
