They say Mitch slapped. No PTX SLAPPED.. Awesome, beautiful, talented, young folks who are blessed to entertain and I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THEM❤️❤️❤️😊

There may not be words in any language that describe them anymore.
I am just glad I am lucky enough to live in a time where I can listen to such beauty.

This is the solo that made me fall in love with Matt's voice. He's always a great performer, but his rich gospel tone really shines in this and the effortless drop into his bass is just gorgeous.

Kirstin Maldonado (alto) and Mitch Grassi (tenor/countertenor) together make one helluva treble section. They have similar ranges and tones (not too surprising, given the same vocal coaches during their teen years). When they sing together like that, it sounds like the same voice in harmony with itself.

I tend to use one word, when it comes to describing what this group does.
    Magical.
Every one of their songs / performances are done so perfectly.
    They give one million percent.
We the audience, are NEVER disappointed.
In this particular one, the leads were amazing. But, it wouldn't be what it is without Kevin's percussion.
    A quick side note.
Did you happen to notice that he (Kevin) appears to clap. But, his hands never come together?
I think that there are two reasons for this.
    First, for dramatic effect.
Second, no one would believe that he could make that sound with his mouth.
    Just an observation.
This was a wonderful reaction. Genuine appreciation is awesome to see.
    Thank you.
May your day be filled with hope, joy and love.

Where Pentatonix excels is in their EMOTIONAL connection to the songs they perform. You can coach/teach this, BUT these performers learned this magic years ago!! That's why possess and project the mojo! They connect with the music on a deep emotional level, so their audience feels a connection when listening. True artists, musicians, and talents!!

Scott Hoying (the first soloist) is a lyric baritone. His range extends from well into a bass range to well into a tenor range. In official videos (like this one), the bass will record an extra track that covers his harmony line in the arrangement of his solo, and they'll layer that in, but they can't do that in live performances. So during live performances Scott covers the bass harmonies whenever the bass sings a solo.
The "somebody new" is Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), their current bass. Matt joined after Avi left in late 2017. Like Avi, Matt is a lyric bass. Avi is a true operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers during live performances), but his upper register extends well into the baritone range. When Matt first joined PTX his range was less than Avi's, on both ends. But when I heard them in their Denver concert on November 20, 2022 I would swear that Matt's lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi, and his highest note was in the *tenor* range! Matt is the youngest member of Pentatonix (two years younger than Mitch), and I've been told that bass singers' voices take longer to fully mature than the voices of people with higher ranges, which would explain the increase in Matt's range. Matt is spectacular, and I expect him to become more so over the next year or two.
Sounds like you're a full-fledged pentaholic now; welcome to the rabbit hole! I only discovered them last September, and I'm totally addicted at this point. You'll get up to speed on the members and their abilities quickly; we're glad to help newcomers with useful tidbits of information.

I am so delighted by your catch of the dynamics that they're doing, the swells, absolutely such a fantastic thing they're doing in this song! I love it, another song that highlights that is their cover of Kiiara's Gold, which is a 'everyone sits on a couch with mics and blows you away with musical talent' song. They do things that I never would have imagined with that one. Sound of Silence and Cecelia were two of my favorite songs as a kid from S&G, and this just blew me ALL the way away when I heard it first. I love the little things they do in it, especially the way that Kirsten's clear tone to vibrato held notes feel like she tosses the note and then pulls it back as it vibrates, and then the ultimate toss near the end where they throw a ball of gorgeous unison in the air and it explodes into harmony.
Thanks so much for your reactions, it's so fulfilling to watch you react in the same way that I do to these wonderful songs. There's so much left, a rich world of variety, and I'm here for ya (even though we're struggling after a huge surgery and car bill so I'll have to cancel b4 Dec. but I'll hit you back in the new year

Just a bit about Kirstin, while her vocals have always been great, she has showed a marked improvement in recent years. Most attribute this to a rise in her confidence level following her stint on Broadway in the musical 'Kinky Boots' shortly before this video was made. I think it has a little more to do with their simply maturing as artists as a whole. Considering when they started "the trio" were just out of high school and just recently turning 30, not to discount the former though in aiding that process.

    • @tnae
      @tnae  2 роки тому +12

I think I would probably fall in your camp on this one, too. Sure, a successful run on Broadway will do wonders for anyone's confidence. But time, in my opinion, is still the best teacher out there. Some people argue with me when I say that and tell me it's experience, not time...but my retort is usually, "Yeah? Try having one without the other." ...they laugh :p

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Рік тому +2

@@tnae There's another factor that you don't have enough information to catch.
At some point you should probably take a look at all of their performances on _The Sing-Off,_ preferably in order so you can see how they developed over the course of the season. It's utterly fascinating to watch - _The Sing-Off_ provided coaches who could help out with arranging music and doing choreography, and Pentatonix never used them. They were already pretty good at arranging, but they basically spent 10 weeks teaching themselves choreography, from scratch, and by the 12th performance they were experts.
But the place I'm going with this is that Mitch had had a difficult time in high school, being bullied for his high voice. And that was probably at least partially because Mitch is gay and was out of the closet. Scott is gay, too, but as a baritone he was less vulnerable than Mitch, as well as being bigger. So they got on _The Sing-Off,_ and one of the major goals Scott and Kirstin had was to get Mitch's voice recognized for the wonder that it is, to counter the horror that it had put him through in high school, and the producers of _The Sing-Off_ went out of their way to prevent that. They were afraid that if Mitch revealed his upper range it would raise questions about his sexual orientation, and they didn't want that coming out on their show. So they basically spent the entire season bullying Mitch some more, except this time it wasn't high schoolers doing it, it was adults in a position of authority.
PTX pushed back against it as much as they could, of course, but it still took them ten weeks to get to the point where they could get away with a proper solo from Mitch, and when they did it was spectacular. At the end of that performance there was a group hug of Mitch, and Kirstie was the farthest away so she was late getting there for it. And she couldn't quite figure out how to get in on it, so she grabbed Mitch's elbow and did an adorable little happy dance. But there's an interview from back then where she was asked how she felt about winning, and she burst into tears and said something along the lines of "I'm just so happy people are finally able to hear how wonderful Mitch is."
For Kirstin, at that time, she apparently saw her primary role in Pentatonix to be supporting and promoting Mitch, so she was tending to underplay her own talent. She seems shy whenever she talks about herself. And that kind of engineered (by herself, no less) self-doubt can be internalized over time. I think her stint in _Kinky Boots,_ with other artists from outside of Pentatonix treating her as a star, shocked her out of mother hen mode and into star performer mode. And, of course, all of this is me looking at it from outside, and I wasn't there and don't know them personally, and am not qualified to make psychiatric diagnoses, so give my opinion only as much weight as you think it deserves. It was probably a whole lot of factors that all worked together to bring her to the place she is today; that's how things usually work. But don't discount _Kinky Boots_ entirely.

Kirstie's belt is so gorgeous and big and controlled! I love it when they all belt together and create their wall of sound because you can hear each voice in the mix. Five other singers, even incredibly great singers, singing the same arrangement, still wouldn't be Pentatonix, because they each have their own unique timbre added into the sound that makes PTX, PTX. The sound did shift a bit when Avi left and Matt joined, but it still sounds like Pentatonix. I'm tuned into Mitch in particular all the time because my ears can't get enough of him, but where would we be without Scott riffing his soul out like he does, and Kirstin belting the top of our heads off, and Kevin throwing down beats and harmonies (often very high falsetto harmonies - they all have incredible ranges, even Matt hits impressive high notes along with his gorgeous low register, (it isnt always Mitch or Kirstie up in the stratosphere). Anyway, I mean to say, Pentatonix can't be duplicated.

I do know that I haven't gotten back to a few artists that I sampled as I was finding my way here on this platform. I think back then I had made an early habit of simply avoiding artists that seemed to pose more challenges with copyright claims and blocks than others. I was pretty new here at the time and I didn't really have any tools yet to navigate these hurdles. I've figured some stuff out over the past year and so I think it's time I started looking back into some of those old artists.
Do you have a suggestion of where I should start?

    • @jayholland2632
      @jayholland2632 2 роки тому +2

@@tnae The typical jumping off point is her stunning rendition of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. She writes her own arrangements and took this to a whole new level. It falls, along with 'Arirang Alone' which you already saw, in what I refer to as her "Epics". Which include 'I Have Nothing', 'Lean on Me', You Raise Me Up' and her Magnus Opus 'Everyone' which she calls her "most difficult and demanding" arrangement and performance. When you check out the latter, make sure to get the one off of the "V" platform with Eng CC's.
During the height of the pandemic she appeared on a show called 'Begin Again: Korea' in which her and other artist performed impromptu, acoustic, "busking" style concerts to lift the spirits of the general public. Because of their style, this showed a completely different level of control and mastery she posseses.

@@patriciaalvareztostado8170 Have you watched their performances on _The Sing-Off?_ There's an interview from that time period where Kirstie is asked what her feelings are about their new-found fame and she bursts into tears and says something like "I'm just so glad that people are finally going to realize how wonderful Mitch's voice is."
I think in the early days Kirstie thought of Pentatonix as "The Mitch Grassi Band and Fan Club," and thought of herself as the president of the fan club part of that. She only began to realize how formidable her own talent is when Todrick Hall talked her into starring in his _Wizard of Ahhhs_ and all the guys talked about how spectacular she was in it, but even then she seemed to be shy. But after Avi left she went to Broadway for a stint in _Kinky Boots_ and found herself being treated as an equal by performers she respected *outside* of Pentatonix, and that seems to have finally convinced her. (Some people take a *lot* of convincing, especially about how talented they themselves are. Mitch has only begun to come to terms with his own vocal insecurities since he began getting professional help to deal with the issue during the lockdown.)

@@margretrosenberg420 Yeah, I always love her voice and her personality, since the beginning, she and Mitch were my favorite since the first song, I think even when she was on the spot light, like Mitch and Scott, she is very good with the harmonies, and helping Mitch when he takes the lead,
And for the clear time that I saw a true star on Kirstin was Say something, the way she sing that song and emotion that she put singing, and Reather be too, after that I always want to hear more solos of her, even if she doesn't sing all the songs

@@patriciaalvareztostado8170 Check out her solo in "Seasons of Love." They performed it with a choir in the background on _A Capitol Fourth._ Utterly spectacular. A high note that most people would expect only from Mitch, and she just belts it out like there's nothing to it.

Agreed! I think they lower her in the mix way too often in their recordings. I’ve seen them 10+ times in concert and she’s a force to be reckoned with. Sometimes I think they need to lower her mic bc she is a belter 😂

Many thanks to Simon & Garfunkel, they have a huge catalogue of work and have influenced MANY current artists.....thanks to them for writing and recording this classic first over 50 years ago, warning us to not turn our backs on the world and it's willingness to embrace "SILENCE"........they made it possible for Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret this great piece of music......

Fair warning this is a long post cuz I listed songs to help you lol This is not a group you will tire of…the obsession builds with every song, for audiences or screwing around in their off time. Knowing helps! I do want to say that the best way I’ve heard their voices and harmonies work so effortlessly together described was that their voices are braided together in the songs. Their vocal ranges and keys are so close together that it’s easy to forget their are 5 of them unlike other groups that are all over the scales. They are each so talented in their own right and yet together it’s just magical.
I hope you see this cuz this is taking a hot minute on a phone! Im a music snob. I know this and I own it. I was fully prepared to be thoroughly under impressed when my girl child made me take her to the concert where they opened for Kelly Clarkson because they were fresh off the Sing Off. I have never been so damn excited to be so wrong. They were so young and so green and outside and they blew the minds of everyone there. I know this because everyone was standing. Everyone was wide eyed and grinning. But everyone was SILENT so they could be heard. They’d finish a song and the place would ERUPT! If I had to write a plan for you to really get a full appreciation and feel for it it’d be this:
Watch The Sing Off (season 3 I believe) YT has vids of just their performances and every single one is off the charts. (The judges were great too lol Sara Barallies., Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman of Boyz2men) Their versions of Video Killed the Radio Star really put them ahead of the others but when they did Steppenwolfs Born to Be Wild and then Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On it was hard to imagine anyone else winning. But when they did Florence and the Machines Dog Days Are Over? Season was over lol
    Then watch :
    Hallelujah
    Bohemian Rhapsody
Amazing Grace (I’m not religious and I get goosebumps every time I hear it)
    The Sound of Silence
    The Prayer
Over the River with Lindsay Sterling
    Dreams
    Cant Hold Us
    Jolene w Dolly Parton
Imogene Heaps cover of Aha…earphones are mandatory and be prepared for your head to pop off at what Mitch throws down!
Todrick Hall’s Wizard of Ahhs with PTX…epic!!
Prayers for this World was released this last holiday season and it speaks right to the feels.
and then check their individual stuff..you can find all kinds of compilations of their ‘top 10 best’ and vocal ranges which are actually pretty fricking good on their own!
Mitch Grassi’s cover of Billie Eilish’s Your Power is mind blowing but his side music project ‘Messer’ really broadcasts what a creative and brave artist in music and fashion he is! Machine I love…and Gasoline Tears let’s his voice just goooo! All different but still so him..seems to be either a love it or hate it thing lol I don’t know how anyone couldn’t love to listen to him sing. There’s a colab video of him just stopping to sit in front of a computer w headphones on and a violinist begins playing in the corner and he starts singing like he wasn’t just on a kitchen run but stopped to blow minds with that voice! He’s singing I’m with You with such passion and emotion alongside the violin that I just wanna cry. It’s called Mitchy and Me - I’m With You xoxo
Avi Kaplans solo work is very distinctive - in part because of the voice but he also has a folksy/indie vibe going in the best way! The single I’m Only Getting Started is awesome - you’ll get it when he hits the chorus! Floating on a Dream is gorgeous But The First Place I Go and On My Way tell pretty deep and kinda sad stories. Well worth listening to.
Scott Hoying has a video from when he was a fetus of him rapping ‘I should tell yo mama on ya’ that had me looping it for hours lol or his single Mars or when he sang Hallelujah live with Il Volo…breathtaking. There’s a raw video of him at a piano at home singing I can’t Make You Love Me that raises the hairs on your arms.
Then there’s Superfruit which is Scott and Matt and wow! The Promise is really good!
Kevin O doing his Cello Boxing on anything is enough to make me jealous as hell but you can’t go wrong! HOWEVER his cover of Harry Styles Sign of the Times floored me! Renegade is really good too. Hells bells anything he does is freaking inhuman!
Matt’s best vocal so far imho is You’re A Mean one Mr. Grinch
But his duet Freedom with Michelle Lutz showcases his singing voice and there’s also a video from 2018’s Berklee Night where he sings Life is a Highway and he kills it!
Kirsten’s single Break a Little and All Night show a different but equally talented side to her.
You can’t go wrong with anything PTX honestly.
Now I have a huge favor lol if you could react to Nicotine Dolls it would be amazing and you’ll love it! What Makes You Sad or the cover/redo of Taylor Swift’s Romeo and Juliet (wasn’t a fan of the song but he changed that asap! And renamed his version Love Story /Check Yes Juliet…his voice is one of a kind!
