Allan Holdsworth - Ruhkukah solo transcription

- I decided to do my first full transcription of a guitar solo, and put this together gradually over a few weeks. It's one of my favourite Holdsworth solos, and his music deserves all the tribute people can give. Email me at rnebbettblades@gmail.com if you would like the musescore file.
The only missing element is the harmony, which I was unable to transcribe and instead wrote the tonality Holdsworth was using every time it changed. There is not too much 'outside' playing here, so that interpretation of the harmony should allow one to solo over it. Rhythmically a few sections are also inaccurate, as Gary Husband's drum parts sometimes steer clear of any sense of pulse to interpret rhythmic subdivisions against.
As my laptop and its storage capacity are slowly dying, I opted to use some very limited online video editing software (clipchamp), hence the unprofessional look and sync issues from website lag messing up my repairs.
I hope you all enjoy learning parts from this and applying them to your own playing. To my knowledge, no other transcriptions or full covers of this exist on the internet.
I love that you added the chord modes and scales. I dont know if thats common in transcribing but it's interesting to see
I would have just added the chords, but they're difficult to pick out so I inferred from what Holdsworth was playing over them. I've got a new version of the musescore file with all the actual chords added now
I agree, it helps my ear training, I am more blues and rock with other bits and pieces, I think this may be the closest I have come to understanding this music actually.. I find it too clever or challenging usually but I like to mix it up and push my boundaries a bit, as a player, I think it's healthy.
its definitely helpful with listening to this. chords are useful too, but scales help me break this down better into an idea of what allan was doing.
I swear, it's like Holdsworth fell out of the sky through a dimensional wormhole from some other planet or plane of existence where they only speak higher mathematical equations in the form of music.
It really does feel like that sometimes, doesn't it. Favourite album?
@@reubennb2859 it's hard to pick just one, but "Sixteen Men of Tain" and "Sand" top the list. Also I have "Wardenclyffe Tower" on cassette and I wore it out backwards and forwards transcribing the solos
Well put! I could not have asked for a better description of Holdsworth. Absolutely blows my mind!
@@zylaxis yes! Sixteen men of Tain is one of my favorites. I bought the CD from Allan when he played here In Vegas.
One of the best Allan solos. The amazing atonal phrasing.
Allan. He never fails to stun and floor us.
Thanks for giving us mere mortals a chance.
Practice Hard
You will do it.
thats greatness
one of my favorite AH solos
No other guitarist can come close to this genius improvisers Allan is alone
only 1 comes to mind for me that could be placed alongside Allan. and thats Shawn Lane. truly the greatest guitarists to ever live
There is a timelessness to Allan's playing. You can't tell if it was recorded in the 70's or yesterday, or in 2134.
Love those atonal lines.
I was just listening to this thinking....I should see if there is a transcription...NAH! Impossible!!! But YOU did it! Excellent and thank you! The scale analysis is SO helpful! I'll try to get this up to 25% of tempo in about 10 years. LOL!!!
outstanding sir
FANTASTIC!!
So astonished! I transcribed this solo when i was 25, your transcription is amazing ! Congrats, one of my prefered solo ever...
Thanks man! It's still one of my favourites too, and there are some great live versions as well. I'm passingly familiar with your work too, love the stuff with Virgil and I'll check the rest out!
Always loved Alans solos but the real magic is in the chordal movement.
Greetings for this exceptional and very difficult transcription! Holdsworth 4ever 👌👌👌👌
Feeling endless love for this channel
Fantastic transcription. Shame I'll never be able to play it.
I think in maybe a hundred years time someone will be able to create stunningly original music & play guitar like this.
Oh someone already has.
Allan the man from 100 years into the future. Or even another planet. A true creative genius in a world of copies & cliche
Reuben, I appreciate everything about this. Love that you wrote out the tonality; something often missing in transcription works. Seeing it, then hearing it, helps the mere mortal, like me, give these lines some tonal perspective and understanding. This is stellar work. Thank you for sharing, my friend!
Hands up! Nice!
Holy Cow!!! Awesome!!! Thanks so much. This was a ton of work!!!
Sure took a while, as I was totally inexperienced with transcribing back then. My most recent transcription feels a bit low-effort (just 2 riffs), but I've got some larger projects I should get around to posting this spring
Fabulous..
Cheers!
What a great transcription of an impossible solo.
Thanks for a great transcr! This solo is A1-level rock solo.Quite non holdsworthian imo.I have had young students asking me about good shred and their attitude changes 100% when they hear this and understand Yngwie and EvH are not the highest.
Awsome, thank you !
This is great would love to see more transcriptions
Cheers! I'm currently working on Allan's synthaxe solo from Postlude. I'll maybe consider doing all the instrumental solos on the album as a long term project - it's such a bafflingly complex collection of music, with melodic patterns and harmonies that have probably never been used before, anywhere...
Reuben Nebbett-Blades yes it is some of the greatest music ive ever heard
Incredible chorus and tricks !
Really great work Reuben NB, thank you.
Excellent transcription
Cheers Lucas! I've used yours over the years, excellent work on your part too
@@reubennb2859 Thanks Ruben!
Great job !! Amazing...
Man! Thank you for add the chord modes and scales!!! It´s really helpful, I love it!
As if this makes ANY sense to 99.9% of us....
Wow...great work on a un-wordly solo...
神が降臨しとるね。この曲にチャレンジ出来るチャンスをくれてありがとね。
Thank you so much ..........
Thank you for sharing this, this such a gift from your amazing efforts, very inspiring.
The grand master has found himself another disciple
I am very much looking forward to have your transcribtion for this tune sir, do you allow me to download?
@@hkteo434 Thanks! Feel free to email me if you'd like the original file in musescore or pdf, and I can send it over
@@reubennb2859 thanks a lot..
So amazing, thanks for posting!!
Fantastic! Just discovered the channel.... how is it you have so few subscribers is beyond my understanding. Subscribed. Great work!
Thanks! Let me know if there are any exciting transcriptions you'd like done. I can't make any promises but I'm looking out for new things to transcribe after I've finished the current batch
fantastic work thank you for posting this.
Nice work Reuben! A monster of a solo..
Sounds great to me! Nice licks!
Wow man…congrats. This is a great achievement. 👊
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah amazing man !!! Finally I can try this solo hahahahh thank you so much !!! Keep the AWESOME work !!!
Thanks! The monster diminished lick starting at bar 74 is immensely satisfying to play, and It's fun to improvise in this style over the actual track too - enjoy!
@@reubennb2859 yeeees !! Hopefully I'll be able to play this haahahaha Then record a cover !!
@@jmorellisilva Please do get in touch if you record a cover. It may well be the first ever full guitar cover of this song, unless I can be bothered to finish learning it.
Hello, can you play this solo now?
@@starrmayor2355 I never got around to learning it, been busy with some other transcriptions. I'm also a student (not music), so there's not tonnes of time to dedicate to learning a single solo this long and complex when I could be getting to grips with something totally new. I still play over the changes to this track occasionally though
EXELLENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! love your playing
@@reubennb2859 EXELLENT work allan i love it ! thanks so much for your compliment ! the solo 7 questions is my favorite in secret album ..this album his fantastick too ( hard and area )..i have seen him before to him go to the sky ! allan is an light how he think the musique !!
Wow.
allan always genius!
Great job!
Besides immaculate technique, if you understand the tonality- it will make sense. Most of it is C major with various upper structures on top of every chord. The "A tonal" lines are mostly a simple Neapolitan mixture on Cmaj #11.
In addition, there are modulation to A, G, Bb etc. They will not be prepared with Two-Five progression like happens in jazz bop music, but rather through sudden alterations.
Guitar players- learn tonality and you could enjoy and understand Holdsworth much deeper than just thinking its unreachable alien music.
There you go Reuben from Reuben NB does it again with a stellar transcription
Epic work. Thank you :)
Hi, I didn't quite understand the rhythm of the song. I transcribed the notes to a midi file but I don't understand why the first notes after the bars are not correlated with the 4/4 bars announced at the start of the song.
I'm not quite sure what you mean, could you explain a little more please?
Damn,,,
Hello!, great job!!!did you transcribe the chords too?
Thanks! I didn't transcribe them, merely interpreted the tonality of the lead lines Allan played. However, I have a revised edition of the musescore file, with the chord voicings copied from a more capable transcriber's video, ua-cam.com/video/_F2rUjrOlGM/v-deo.html , but I didn't think it was worth making a whole extra transcription video just for these. Email me if you'd like a copy or pdf - it sure is a fun progression to play over
Maravilha
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!!
That is all.
Fantástico...what about the chords?
Email me and I can send you the updated version, complete with chords tabbed out
sweet g sus!
Thanks for the cool transcription!
P.S. Sorry, but I think placing the tablature above the notes is a bad decision. The habits are pressurized and the note lines get confused.
thanks! how would you prefer the layout? this was 3 years ago but all feedback is appreciated before I make my next video!
@@reubennb2859 As it usually do everywhere (guitar pro, guitar editions - you must know) - sheet music at the top, the tablature below it at the bottom. That's my little wish, if you still do transcriptions.
I seem petty. I should have watched your channel's latest videos before advising you. I'm sorry :)
@@PopovSB no worries it's all ok
Are you god?
wtf WTF
Just came here to say - no.
What

What i meant is I'm not even going to try this, i know my limitations
Brilliant transcription
