This was a regular rental for me when I was a kid, I always thought the graphics and movement mechanics were impressive. It was difficult though, I don't think I ever beat it.
the 'movement mechanics' weren't anything new. It was typical top down racing game controls we'd had in many, many games before and since. This game is pretty great though. The sprite work making the boats almost feel 3D with all that smooth rotation was a big plus for me.
This was one of the hardest games I had growing up. Years later I realized my brothers and I never learned how to trigger the power ups. But we still played it so much, so clearly it was still fun.
the boat being boaty is what made it different and good. i don't think it would work if the player sprite went like a planted car or tank or directional walking kind of a thing.
Rented this game as a kid many times from my local video store. Really nostalgic game for me and still great fun. Definitely not an easy game though. :)
I rented this game from the video store as a kid back in the day and totally forgot about it until just now. Thanks for sparking this memory! It was an awesome game from what I remember!
glad youre still making content. I was born in 2002 but the SNES is such a big point of nostalgia for me and im not sure why. The music, the graphics, the stories told on this console are some of the best
This was one of those games that I remembered renting all the time... but couldn't remember the name to search it up. Finally I found it on Rare Replay and figured out what game it was after all these years.
I've been a fan of your channel ever since I stumbled upon your channel, TWICE! First time was when I saw your "review of Top Gear-series", about 10 years ago or so, which is a dear and special series to me and my neighbor, but I actually never got around to subscribe to your channel back then. But then, I stumbled upon your channel again when youtube brought me to your "Best SNES music"-video. THEN I just had to subscribe as I was sold! Awesome tracks from many of my favorite games. :) And since then, you've have kept making awesome retro-content while you have kept things simple and straight to the point. That I both respect and salute you for. Now, I am watching this video, and even though I am a big retrofan, it's slipped past me that Cobra Triangle and Killer Instinct were made by a lot of the same people! What a cool fact that was to hear. 2 very special games to both me and my neighbor. Thanks once again for another great video! PS: A neat difficulty curve was what we always cherished for back in the days and even today. Gotta love them challenges. :)
This was one of the first videogames I ever played and I distinctly remember it as being both fascinating AND frustrating. I remember thinking the visuals and concept of the game were super cool but looking back it was definitely too hard for four-year-old-me and I never beat it lol. Fun, nostalgic video as always! I still own the cartridge from when I was a kid and this video has motivated me to pick it up again and finally try and beat it!
I always love seeing you go REALLY old school and review an old NES game. There were so many games on there that really deserve to be remembered, some of which weren't even that well known at the time, like this one.
My exposure to this game was through the minigame in the Donkey Kong Country 3 GBA port. It's basically this game with a Kong coat of paint, and I liked it
Ah, Cobra Triangle. Thank you to my cousins showing me this back in the day and it only took 30 years to beat. Still a really fun game but it has that Nintendo hard factor in it.
I have a lot of nostalgia for this one. I remember getting the Power Glove for Christmas, and it was so awful that we returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for Ninja Gaiden and Cobra Triangle. Much better value!
This is my fifth favorite NES game. The game is so hard but rewarding. Damn that music hits hard. Love how even after all these years can wake up to see you still covering gems people underestimate how many great NES games there are.
@@havanaradio batman doesn't make my top 20 Super Contra and SMB3 are both in my top 5. Your top five can be different from mine and I'm sorry you don't enjoy it that is cool. If people all liked the same games we would have very little selection.

As soon as I saw this game I thought it was immediately similar to another Rare game, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll! Not surprised they made this one looks cool.
Cobra Triangle was one of the many NES games a friend of mine had back in the day and I remember coming back to this game frequently. I don't think it was too well known or popular back in the day so it's cool to see it being talked about today. I still need to beat this game... maybe one day
in 1989-1990 i was at my friend house on the same road as me during hot summer days. We were playing soccer, swimming in the pool, and after that we took Mr Freezes and popsicles. After that we were going in his cold and fresh basement to play this. Great memories and i still play every summer on my NES today.
Uh, this game looks incredible. I honestly find it hard to believe it's on the nes. Also, thanks Mr snes drunk for the consistent quality on your videos for so many years. I've been watching a ton of your back catalog recently and there's so many games I gotta try now
Man the hours I spent playing this as a kid. This is also a prime example of why having the booklet was crazy important during the NES era. I went several months not knowing about the power up system until I just stumbled on it. While this game isn't nearly as unplayable as some other games without instructions, knowing you had a spread shot at your disposal would have been nice to know. Also, amazing soundtrack. I still hum the boss music to this day.
Nice! It is amazing how Rareware always made some creative and technically impressive titles on whatever platform they were working on! I've heard this game can get incredibly challenging (like many classic Rare games).
Great review! This is most likely my favorite NES game (and I'm no n00b in NES). Just the right insane difficulty that still keeps you trying. That four way-shot though, ay ay ay
Hey! @SNES drunk! - idk if you read the comments...but I really appreciate and value your videos! Can we just pause for a second and admire how fluid the boat's turn around animation is? That's 3-D CG quality stuff coming from the old NES. Must've made some model and somehow scanned it into the development software. Seems very impressive for the time.

I've been waiting for a long time to see someone give this gem a proper review! The few reviews I have seen have been so obviously phoned in. They played the game for a few minutes and said meh it's RC Pro AM on boats and the controls are difficult.... just, no. To your point there is way more depth to it and you need to spend the time to learn this game inside and out to appreciate it. I can beat this game every time now (without continues). It's about a 15 - 20 minute playthrough. I've always liked Cobra Triangle, even if I never put in the effort to get all that far. Still, it's the kind of game that makes you *want* to play it more, so I know I'll be back again and again to try progressing just a little further each time.
This was one of the few games I had to use a Game Genie and the NES Max to finish. It pissed me off so much I got rid of it which I regret now. I'll pick up a copy somewhere eventually.
Another great video- I didnt think it was worth playing back then but I didnt get many games I was poor. After watching though I was probably wrong, it looks fun.
This ranked up there as one of my most frequent rentals as a kid. It's hard as hell, but so satisfying when you get good at it. I never completed it, but young me used to be able to get pretty far on a rental weekend. Doubt I have the dexterity to make it as far these days. Also shout out to the soundtrack, another Wise classic, albeit that most of the tunes are pretty short and repetitive when you're stuck in the same level for a while.
This is one of my favorite NES games along with eliminator boat duel. I've never actually been able to get to the end of either them. But I like the unique idea of boat combat. Speaking of that it seems like the ultra difficulty was kind of all over the NES. 20 minutes to play you mean some takes twenty hours. So many NES games where you have to just practice and memorize the levels. Totally off subject but Kabuki quantum fighter is definitely one of those kind of games
I've been playing it lately, but I haven't been able to finish the waterfall levels, I always lose all my lifes trying to jump over the third and fourth waterfall :(

Nintendo published Slalom for NES more than two years before Cobra Triangle and it was one of the few 3rd party developed black box titles and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the first Western developer to develop a NES game. They had a strong relationship pretty early on.
I feel like these NES reviews should be labelled under NES Drunk, since we already have a Switch Drunk on this channel. Although it would make things extra complicated if it was to cover more systems.
wow what a flashback!! had completely forgotten about this game but instant waves of nostalgia with that footage. glad to hear it holds up

But I'm happy to know now, I should try it! Thank you for sharing that!
Nice review man!
This was the best NES game I didn’t own - rented it countless times!
Ah, Nostalgia.... My Grandmother had this game, I used to play it at her house when I was a kid...
One of the best under the radar games for the NES. Followed by Solar Jetman. Still fun to play today
U can beat video games did a great walk through of this a few months ago. Everyone should check that channel out

That guy has very impressive skills, and his breakdowns are easy to understand, aiding anyone in their journey to beat difficult games.
You know it's the dogs playing and commentating right ?
Amazing
Did David Weiss also do the snake rattle n roll sound track? It sounds very similar to the music in this one
BIG YES, it's a top 10 NES game in my opinion. Rare is an amazing company.
Eh, maybe they were. Not so much these days.
Oh, so that one surfing level in Battletoads was a not so subtle reference to Cobra Triangle. Neat.
