  • In October 2021, I decided to challenge myself to write 4 short stories (between 2000-4000 words), polish them to quality, and submit it to a credible publication. Consider this video my writer's diary.
I was inspired to pursue this project after reading a passage in Ray Bradbury's writing memoir, Zen in the Art of Writing. Interested in reading the book? Here is an affiliate link to Amazon: amzn.to/3GV52Yn
Writing challenges are great for developing a consistent process, getting over writer's block, and breaking through creative plateaus.
Can you write a draft on Monday, edit it during the week, and submit it on Saturday? Give it a try and let me know how it turns out for you!

Absolutely love the 4 elements for 4 stories. Brilliant!

I love this! I've been wanting to try a Ray Bradbury routine for a while, and having watched this I'm definitely going to put that into action next year. What's intimidating to me is not having a break from the work before editing - I feel like I might lack distance and perspective to see the strengths and weaknesses in the writing. But the idea of creating and submitting stories in such a short period is too exciting to miss out on.

Yes, I found it really challenging to go straight into editing immediately after the first draft. What this project taught me was to go into an editing session with a specific intention, so I don't get distracted working on a flowery line for an hour lol Thanks for this comment! Good luck with writing!

Wow! Thank you for this!!! I'm a big fan of the "fast but good" pulp writers of the 30s and they are my models for the flash fiction I write and post every week (and the longer stuff as well!) And a buddy of mine was in a writing group with Ray Bradbury in L. A., and I'm betting he would be proud of you for making the effort you have! (How many wannabe writers have actually written a short-story?)

This was sooooo good. I've been toying with the idea of writing a story per week for 2022. You are literally God sent. I feel even more encouraged to do it now and challenged to not just write but submit to different competitions. Thank you so much for doing this Elliot.
    QUESTION
If you don't mind sharing, how did you go about finding competitions and deciding where to submit?

Thank you so much for the kind words! It's nearing the end of the year, but here was a list of writing contest from 2021. elliotchan.com/2020/12/24/writing-contests-in-2021/ You can check into these publications to see when they will open their contest in 2022. I usually set up a Google calendar at the beginning of the year and try to schedule contest deadlines in.
When you submit to contest, you usually get an annual subscription. There you can read their publication and see if it's indeed the right fit.
Depending on the genre you're writing in, I find that Googling "[specific genre] short publications" is a good place to start as well. Hope this helps! Best of luck on your writing!
