Masai Giraffe "Miles" Born at the Houston Zoo Jan. 30 '09

Hes very tall and very cute and brand new. Early Friday morning, January 30 the Houston Zoo welcomed the birth of a bouncing baby boy Masai giraffe. He was born around 6:30 a.m. and by 7:50 a.m. he was standing on his own, said Houston Zoo Supervisor Laurie McGivern. Hes 69 and a half inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. Hes has all the appearances of a strong and healthy boy, said McGivern.
The as yet unnamed baby is being hand reared by Houston Zoo giraffe keepers. Noel is a gentle, attentive and good mother but doesnt make enough milk to nurse and raise her calves, said McGivern. So, the keeper staff will bottle feed the calf for at least six months, added McGivern. His primary keepers have a 24 hour watch and feeding schedule in place to ensure he gets the best care and attention. Initially the calfs diet will consist of bovine colostrum mixed with goats milk. But in a day or so we will switch to goats milk mixed with a little bit of water, said McGivern.
Noels newborn will be on view at the Houston Zoo giraffe exhibit. When the calf is in his barn stall Zoo guests can view him through the stall window at the rear of the giraffe exhibit, said McGivern. The staff will also be presenting Meet the Keeper Talks with the baby at various times during the day, added McGivern. Presentation times will vary. Zoo guests are encouraged to visit the Zoos Web site at www.houstonzoo.org for the Meet the Keeper Talk schedules at the giraffe exhibit.
They really are very loving animals - almost like collosally big, sweet-natured horses.

Its June 2009 now and I seen him yesterday. My whole family was looking at the elephants And I was setting alone by the giraffes when he came up to where I was setting; as if to say hi. He is nice.

Best job ever! Even being 6'0" myself that baby giraffe would be taller than me! Ever since going to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego, CA., I have fallen for giraffes. Took the safari tour and hand fed multiple giraffes, young and older adults. Giraffes walking right up to the truck to be fed leaves or pellets. Feeling their breath, lips and tongue on my hand was incredible. Sometimes even leaving some drool! It was an amazing experience I'll never forget. You're one lucky girl, I wish you all the love and best of health towards the new addition of the baby giraffe. Take care!

Amazing how this giraffe baby was hours old, and already kissing and courting this woman, while a human baby at this age would just be totally oblivious to the world!!!!!!!!
How cuuuuuuuuute!!!!!!!! I live in California.. and one time when I went to the Los Angeles zoo, they had a baby girl giraffe there! It was so cute to see! =)

Miles is living with his mom and the giraffe family at the Houston Zoo - he was only separate from them the first few days so we could establish bottle feeding. He is healthy and strong and growing taller each day!
If you come visit the zoo, you can arrange a Behind the Scenes Tour with the giraffes and possibly give Miles a cuddle! Not all the giraffes choose to interact at each visit, but I've been over there several times myself and been able to pat Miles and feed him.
Why in the world are you bottle feeding when he has a mom? Houston zoo, you are a perfect example of what NOT to do with baby animals. Your organization is the reason why I don't visit zoos anymore.

They obviously got something right. Miles is 19 ft tall and the father of a female and a male calf. Another is going to be born soon.
The mother died shortly after he was born, I believe. Anyway, isn’t Miles a dad now?
she mentioned the vet came by in the morning and checked everything. sorry for my ignorance, but if animals are born, die, are generally cared for at a zoo, i would think most workers would need training to assess vitals. or uh...yeah i'm stupid

It almost comes across as though the animals aren't capable of rearing their own bubs, so humans have to step in to save them (cringe), even though for the most part, we are why they are endangered.

Anyway, yeah...it's almost as though it's an alien or something. I reminded of Mars Attacks, where you see all of the creatures, who are wide-eyed and unable to speak English...but still capable of understanding plenty.

Have there been any studies done as to why zoo born babies either can't or won't be fed by their Mums? I'm loosing faith in the whole breeding programme thing. The parents aren't choosing each other. What's the point if all the babies are rejected by their parents and are being raised by humans? These bubs wouldn't survive in the wild (not that there is much left) and isn't that the point of these breeding programmes?
I think this video is hilarious. The thing towers over her, yet it's just been born!
It's also funny because for that reason, the thing seems to know more than it actually does. It's like a little press conference about what the thing is going to eat, and he's standing there silently like some White House aid nodding in the background.
