Hi, I'm German and I can confirm, that it's German kitchen cabinet. But we refer to it as 'Gelsenkirchener Barock'. It's typical for the Ruhr area. The big storage containers are for sugar (as a kid you could climb this type of cabinet easily and put your finger into it. Maybe that's the reason this one has a door.) The others are four flour and grains. Later my grandma used it for noodles and rice. The small ones are for salt and herbs or for dry peas and lenses. I still have this cabinet 6 moves and various colours later. Love it and I haven't painted the inside so it still smells like the kitchen of my grandma.
What a cherished memory! I took a few sentimental items from my Gram’s house after she passed and put them in a big plastic bin. Years later I can open that bin and it still smells like her house-2008. 😢😊
Same here :) But I would estimate this is unfortunately not Art Deco but rather from the sixties. Not everyone liked mid century modern styles. Many bought these more hefty furniture that alluded to past times. Hence the term "Gelsenkirchener Baroque"
Laura- I am very certain this is a 1930’s German “Schrank” (Americans just slaughter this German word!!!). Schrank is correct. It’s almost Biedermeier style, but clearly Deco. It’s a great piece and you got a amazing deal.
I agree. Married and living in Germany for 30 years, the wooden Schrankwand was a typical feature in a "living room" in an apartment. It contained all the precious china and crystal, table linens and even had a closet side for clothes. The kitchens were just that, along with coal stove which heated the apartment. The living room had to act as the dining room, as well. This one is bigger, more elegent and contains the unusual glass containers.
Why does it lock? I figured it a bar type cabinet, then I thought about those glass ( she called them ) drawers. What are those? I have never saw this furniture before anywhere. Stunning it is in great condition.
It's German but not a 'Schrankwand'. A Schrankwand is only to find in the living room or the bedroom. It means a wall completely covered with a wardrobe. Mostly multiple wardrobe in different variations put together or custom made to cover a haul wall. Multifunctionell. If you translate Schrankwand by words would be 'wardrobe wall'. This is a kitchen cabinet but today it's often used in living rooms because it's a nice peace of furniture.
@@MihaGwinSchrank simply means cabinet in German, and yes you are correct there are different types and functions. My Oma had a full wall wardrobe and she had a more traditional one in her living-room. The living room Schrank was set up for afternoon tea and coffee, photo albums, table linens. I have fond memories. This one is specifically a Küchenschrank. It’s a more old fashioned piece set up for kitchens of yesteryear. It would have been used in a larger more affluent household.
I am sure that this is a German hutch. Mein German grandmother had one similar to yours. The glass 'containers' are not scoops, they were used to store, sugar, flour and spices. Great find Laura!!! :)
I thought the glass inserts would be similar to modern-day canisters, too. I think people then used staple ingredients much quicker than nowadays because they made fresh, unprocessed foods daily.
... and to store also open bought other dry goods as (unpackaged) lentils, rice and semolina in the containers, also. At least my german grandmother, born 1901, did. I think it is a very grand kitchen closet/cabinet, my grandmother's was white. Oh... and Schrank is just the german word for closet or cabinet.
Not certain it is German. My oma had one too and is from the Netherlands. For flour, coffee, rice, sugar, salt etc. It was in the kitchen and it contained also plates and bowls etc.
Hi Laura, I also think it's a German buffet. The glasses are used to store flour, sugar ect. as mentioned here in the comments. Also my "Oma" grandma had a very similar one and she put out the ingredients of the glass stores to bake her special "OMA Kuchen" - Grandma Cake ;-)
I vote for nothing in the Burlewood vase! Let its beauty speak for itself. Always enjoy your show, if I see you posted one it comes first before anything else when I open my iPad!
I liked the branch in the vase. Both the branch and the vase were nice and big and that island kind of needs something nice and big because it’s massive. And the combination of the natural texture of the vase against that countertop is just *chef’s kiss*.
I think the branch should be shorter but not so short that the vase overpowers the branch. Also maybe shorten the branch at the base so it goes all the way down into the liner.
Oh Laura!! The beautiful German hutch is incredible!! I would put this in my home in a hot second and wow, did you ever get it for a steal!! You will enjoy this for years and years, if you choose to keep it!! Nothing made today ( except by a master craftsman) can come close to this wonderful piece in beauty, functionality, craftsmanship, and design! Congratulations!
I live in the same city as Laura, I don't think we have better thrift stores. She just much betters eyes, and luck for that matter, than the rest of us do!! LoL
Jessie! That twig is stunningly beautiful and absolutely perfect for the vase! It looks straight out of nature, like it was sitting out in the woods and you just found it like that!😊
We have those kind of glass drawers in old Swedish shelfs. They were often located underneath the top cabinets in old kitchens, but also as singular shelfs with those in it. The glass drawers are not scoops. They are used to store flour, grains, sugar etc that you easily can pour from the pointy part. Great find!
I am voting for greenery in the burlwood vase. Sorry Jesse. Im with Laura on this one. The vase is stunning but really comes to life with the greenery, you can just cut it abit shorter and trim the leaves abit for shape. You can move the vase out of they way when you are using the space but when you are not using it, the vase elevates the kitchen space. It is a piece of art. Well done. Next the hutch is incredible. Another incredible find, and the square table. 🎉
My 92 year old neighbor is from Germany. She has similar pieces in her home. I love visiting her and hearing her stories about the acquisition and shipping of the pieces to the U.S.
I live in Clackamas. Oregon City Antiques is my FAVORITE shop in the area. I can't believe you bought that hutch! It's definitely been a statement piece there for quite some time. CONGRATS! It looks absolutely stunning all dolled up against that cobalt wall! A match made in heaven. Good choice girly! ❤❤❤
I LOVE THE CENTER PEICE. PERHAPS SOMETHING LOWER THAT DOESN'T GET IN THE WAY FOLKS VISITING. BUT I LIKE THE BRACH, ACTUALLY. GLAD TO SEE YOU TWO HAVING A TALK AND LISTENING TO EACH OTHER. GOD BLESS!
Old Swedish kitchen had often glass containers in them. They were used for storage of sugar, flour, oatmeal and herbs. Really anything that was used on a regular basis
I am so conflicted between being jelly, but oh so happy; you got that amazing Hutch?!?! She is going to have an amazing new adventure living with you!! ❤
I, too, love the burlwood. You might put some greenery in it that kinda drapes down over the side, almost touching the table. I also adore that huge hutch or cabinet...it is awesome
I believe your hutch is German. It's the equivalent of a Hoosier cabinet for the kitchen. This was, essentially, the kitchen in an apartment or small house. You'd store your dried, grains, flour, sugar in the glass scoops. All your dry goods would be stored in here along with some everyday dishes, kitchen tools, pots & pans. Some refer to it as a "schrank" I believe.
Thank you Thank you for “saving” the hutch and encouraging others to also. There is SO much fabulously built furniture sitting in Antique and Second hand stores of all styles. And your island needed something special and the burlwood vase sure did it! As for in it… maybe semi matching hand carved wood flowers, a few special ones so as to not block the view. Thanks for great videos🕊️
I’d put a blossom branch in the wood vase. Those keys are amazing and I’m pretty sure this hutch is a German piece. The glass cups are used for dry ingredients for cooking, sugar , salt ,spices etc. I’m so glad that the tide is turning and people are no longer butchering beautiful wood furniture with white chalk paint.😁
The china hutch is absolutely amazing!!!! I’m so glad you got it for your studio, and how much fun will it be to style it when you bring home new treasures. The opening with the pic of the group from the shop along this summer made me SMILE😀. That was so much fun and I made new friends that I cherish. Thanks for making me happy.
Love the hutch and the glass inserts. I think the burl wood vase would look nice a green plant that is something very low profile and only lightly drapey. Nice video. Thanks
Thanks to you, I found my first Bitossi n the wild today. A blue Rimini “Lacrima” cigarette box. I would have walked right past it without the knowledge you have shared. Thanks!
Hi Laura, I live near Mackay in Queensland and today while shopping there I actually found a penguin ice bucket too. I sort of shouted out loud. Never thought I would see one here. Keep up the good work. Cheers Noelene.
The buffet is ah-mazing! But honestly, my favorite thing is the granny square duster you are wearing. I have been wanting one of those for awhile now and it’s gorgeous 🥰
I found a 60’s bertossi bull today for $3! It’s got a little chipping in some of the paint so don’t think it has value?? but I live in New Zealand and was amazed to find it in my little church op shop
Looks very German to me! My grandma had almost the same. The glass drawers she used for sugar , spices and salt I do the same ….. I like the kitchen cabinet a lot
I love the vase and I'd place to one side, sleek thin leaves to balance out the beautiful bulkiness of it. WOW Laura, that German hutch is killer. So friggin beautiful.
First the burl vase is fantastic and what you selected to put in it was spot on. The hutch you got is to die for. You definitely scored with it. It’s in good shape and the wood is incredible. Too petty to not be in a home!!
Oh my word, those glass scoops in the hutch had to have been such an exciting surprise treasure for you. Certainly made me happy for you. Personally I’d let the burl vase stand alone. It is absolutely gorgeous. Nice score, girl ♥️♥️♥️ I’ve got your next Friday sale on my calendar. Can’t wait 😊
Great deal on the buffet. I believe the glass containers could be used for cocktail items. Like lemon wedges, different olives and the such. We have a buffet from Germany similar to that. It has curved glass, and so many details. It was from my husband’s grandmother
Same here :) But I would estimate this is unfortunately not Art Deco but rather from the sixties. Not everyone liked mid century modern styles. Many bought these more hefty furniture that alluded to past times. Hence the term "Gelsenkirchener Baroque"
That burl wood vase is so powerful it doesn’t need a branch or flowers. It commands attention all on its own. Thanks for another great video!
Yes, but the cornstalk comment got a LOL and reminded me to poke the LIKE button.
the only thing i could think of is maybe throw an abstract moss piece over the top to cover the hole. because the would drive me nuts.
Well said

I actually love the branch in the burl vase! It looks very organic and, in my opinion, fits the vase beautifully. Love your eye!!
Agreed!
I vote for nothing in the Burlewood vase! Let its beauty speak for itself. Always enjoy your show, if I see you posted one it comes first before anything else when I open my iPad!
My husband and I think an orchid would look great in the burl vase.

All I have to say is that you have better thrift stores than I do.
That hutch is spectacular.
Where in the thrifting video she got it? Did I miss the store where she got it from?
I live in the same city as Laura, I don't think we have better thrift stores. She just much betters eyes, and luck for that matter, than the rest of us do!! LoL
She got the hutch at Oregon City Antiques, in Oregon City Oregon (obviously!😋)
Nice finds! The brass lamp with the black base needs a black shade to set it off.
Jessie! That twig is stunningly beautiful and absolutely perfect for the vase! It looks straight out of nature, like it was sitting out in the woods and you just found it like that!😊
Laura, last week in your little video when you wore the red beret, you looked amazing!! Wear more red!
😂 Thank you! Every time I wear red people tell me that. Maybe I should listen?? 😆❤️
I love that burl wood vase, and I think the branch looks so good in it. It looks like it was meant to be part of it. It's a tree! ❤
We have those kind of glass drawers in old Swedish shelfs. They were often located underneath the top cabinets in old kitchens, but also as singular shelfs with those in it. The glass drawers are not scoops. They are used to store flour, grains, sugar etc that you easily can pour from the pointy part.
Great find!
Its for food, rice, beans, suger, caffé etc
That is one gorgeous cabinet! I would take that cabinet over a new one any day. You could put some type of wallpaper inside you hutch!
Scoops schmoops, I’d fill those puppies full of candy and coffee making supplies! I couldn’t love that piece more!
Growing up in Germany, I remember my Mom had a kitchen cabinet very much like it.
I am voting for greenery in the burlwood vase. Sorry Jesse. Im with Laura on this one. Not only is the German cabinet gorgeous; it is truly exquisite, German solid wood craftsmanship! Congratulations, what a bargain!
Holy cow! That HUTCH is Amazing!!!! Bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🫶🏽
Some long variated grasses would like nice in that wooden vase.
Old Swedish kitchen had often glass containers in them. They were used for storage of sugar, flour, oatmeal and herbs. Really anything that was used on a regular basis
I wish I had brought mine to the states with me. An unfurnished apartment in Germany doesnt have a kitchen or lighting. You have to get your own.
Love the branch in the wood vase THE BRANCH IS YOU LORI
Love the wood vase
THE HUTCH IS MY FAVORITE
THE WAY YOU HAVE IT STYLED IS JUST BEAUTIFUL
Laura, your energy is so contagious… You are truly wonderful. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and joy with the rest of us. 💕💕
That hutch! That is my favorite piece of furniture I've ever seen. Amazing that it has all the scoops. So unique....
I am so conflicted between being jelly, but oh so happy; you got that amazing Hutch?!?! She is going to have an amazing new adventure living with you!! ❤
That buffet is EVERYTHING!! AMAZING!!
The hutch is spectacular! The glass “scoops” were for sugar, coffee, tea, flour…what a find!
Flowers in the vase!!❤ Holy cow, that buffet is fantastic!! $550?? My head just exploded..LOL
Lol, I literally just left the same comment. I am also mind blown 🤯. What an amazing piece of furniture & for only $550. Wow, just wow!
I, too, love the burlwood. You might put some greenery in it that kinda drapes down over the side, almost touching the table. I also adore that huge hutch or cabinet...it is awesome

I love the vase!!! The branch is awesome and is balanced well!! Just move it over if it interferes with conversation! It is beautiful on your island.
The hutch is gorgeous with the glass drawers and locks. Just cut 4" off bottom of branch stick back in vase.❤
I absolutely love the hutch and you got it for a terrific price. Congratulations 👏🎉

That vase looks beautiful by itself.
Great deal on the buffet. I believe the glass containers could be used for cocktail items. Like lemon wedges, different olives and the such. The bigger ones possibly for ice cubes or crushed ice or sugars for mixed drinks. It looked like the areas on the hutch part could have been for the liquor bottles. Not at all sure if I am correct but that is what I would have used it for back in the 1920-30s.
wow! that buffet & hutch are stunning!! What a steal you got & wowzers, does it ever show nicely against your gorgeous blue wall
I'm a total sucker for a beautiful hutch! Ive acrually recently gotten two GORGEOUS ones for FREE! One is a Spanish piece from the 60s and the other was a handmade art deco piece from thr 30s! 😍🥰
Bare, more horizontal branch. Locust tree, corkscrew willow, etc.
Maybe a marble or cool stone sphere on the wood vase😊? loved all your treasures ❤
The hutch is absolutely incredible!! You should consider one white hydrangea in the cool knotty vessel. Obsessed with your channel! ❤️😊
