Tim, thank you for the opportunity to be on your fantastic channel my friend. You’re the best. Fantastic solo in the beginning as usual man!
@Jeff McErlain you're the man!! Always great to see anything with you in it.
Paul Camus thank you!
So great to see Jeff over here on Tim channel. Always such great stuff here Tim. Nice jog. Now where did I leave my Les Paul...oh right...I sold it. Doh!
Hi,
Thanks a lot for the A Short History series, I gained tons of new knowledge in those videos, just wondering if you could do a short history video on ESP guitars?
Cheers
And it's been great to see YOU hanging out here Keith and commenting on other channels and UA-cam live shows too!
Thanks my friend!!!
MORE SHORT HISTORY PLEASE!!???
GOOD then you can get 2 Stratocasters and sound good.
The Camaraderie between you musicians who help each other out, acknowledge each other with NO EGO's involved makes you who you are even more. GREAT PEOPLE. Showing us more than the gift of music but the gift of kindness, respect and love. THANK YOU~!
You two are two of the most relaxed and nuanced guitar teachers in terms of online presentation and content as a package. It's a pleasure to see you together. as I have followed you both separately during this pandemic. Time to shop for a LP.
My god, your solo 9:21 could've gone on forever and I'd still listen several times. Wow what a great vibe you create. Thank you Tim
Only discovered Tim a few months ago and already he’s my favorite player. So much class, feel, melody, and grease. But more than anything, his personality draws me in
Nice interview as always Tim. If you can, please do more with Jeff. He has so much knowledge to share and his UA-cam channel is great! I’d love to hear more interaction between you two.
Just Awesome content of two of my favorite players. Great tones and inspiring licks. Thanks Tim and Jeff !!!
These guys are both so generous with sharing their experience. Tim’s guitar style has really inspired me. Almost by osmosis I find myself playing along in my head, true inspiration. Reminds me of playing along with the Allman brothers albums growing up in the seventies.
So much fun watching these two geek out over the stuff we all love!
Tim, THANK YOU TIM. Seriously, this channel has been the single most inspiring thing I have watched in recent years. I havent put my guitars down since discovering you. As soon as work picks back up, im coming for that masterclass
It's such a great thing when you've subscribed and that little flag pops up in the corner... "New video from Tim Pierce"... Oh hell yeah!!!
Hey thanks so much too
1000 percent man. Love ya tim
What an amazing morning so far! My friend Jess put out a new song in her IG this morning, and right after I finished watching her. I got a notification for this.. I’m huge fan of Jeff, and I have to say that he’s the reason why in play guitar! Thank you Tim for having him today. Have a wonderful weekend!
The classiest and smoothest finger tone on youtube, love it! Thanks for the content Tim 😊
Wow! This has to be the best video on your channel! What I got from this was very inspiring. Looking forward to more like this!
Loved this Tim. Jeff kills it with the strat tone as well. You really nail your solo in the middle with perfect phrasing punctuated by those awesome double stops. Inspiring stuff. Got me reaching for my LP.
This should be called, “dialing a Les Paul with a master.”
Would’ve loved to have called it that but I was afraid it wouldn’t get as many clicks. That’s basically Jeff’s title on his version. Love your videos, by the way!!!
Tim Pierce Guitar Thanks Tim!
Tim Pierce Guitar doesn’t it kind of suck having to title things for SEO? I use TubeBuddy keyword Explorer to try to find a better title. But it’s frustrating- I can’t call it what I want to!! Where art and the algorithms collide! 🤓🎸
Really like the melody of your leads Tim. They always tell a nice story. A quality I always strive for.
If there is one thing that's good about the internet and social media, it's videos like this. I can listen to you two guys talk about guitars all day. Now, though, it's time to play some. Thanks for the inspiration.
Absolutamente. Both of them are fantastic
Superb video chaps, so interesting to hear of the '52 Les Paul from Robben Ford-have seen Robben play that guitar it sounds so sweet! Gratias
Great Tim! Loved the video. Loved trying to learn some of your licks. Peace, Sir.
Thx, Mr. Pierce, still not possible but every time a joy to follow you 👍👏
UA-cam algorithms sent me this channel a few months ago and I’ve been hooked since then. You would think as a drummer I always watch drum videos...Nope. Learn so much more from this. Thanks TP for the vid. Awesome sauce
Great demonstration by Jeff. I recently started getting the hang of a fuzz face after years of failing. I find that it helps create that connection in level between the volume rolled back and full up and then I use a couple of overdrives or boost after to step it up and down. Works really well and the rolled back, always on fuzz face tone is my holy grail clean tone these days.
Gotta love Jeff, lovely, humble guy, brilliant musician and magnificent instructor. Big fan of his!
oh and great hats too!
Ha! Thank you!
Thanks Tim for sharing. Honestly I've never heard of Jeff McErlain and Love the blues . Such a great player and personality to match. I will now start looking for his videos. Thanks Tim your'e Awesome.
Thank you. 🙏
I’ve watched many many of your videos. You always sound great, but rarely have you sounded better. Cheers
Amazing watching you your playing is as smooth as butter !!!
I have a '79 LP Custom that I absolutely love. I have it running through a Plexi as well as a vintage Fender Dual Showman. I have a LP Jr too. On a Plexi it's all about getting that tone with the volume (and tone too) on the guitar. Love it, really all I need. Tone is all over it...beautiful. And yeah, that neck pick up is just sublime on lead tones.
Always great stuff from Tim and Jeff. Back in '72, I bought a Les Paul Deluxe because Duane was playing one and the LP Deluxe was all I could afford ($389.00 a lot of cash in those days). Moved away from the Les Paul and played strats since then. but came across a Gibson Memphis ES- Les Paul. Fell in love with the tone and playability all over again, and didn't miss the weight. Completely agree regarding the nuances on both the tone and volume controls. You can grab the middle pickup, roll the volume back on the neck pickup and get the sweetest sound through your amp. Thanks for the insight on the '52 LP from Robben. I've seen him play it a number of times and know that Jeff could not pass that up. Looking forward to the new record!
I have done the magnet flip trick on quite a few lp style guitars, and it has always given me that Peter Green sound, but there are 2 quirks, it's only truly out of phase when the volumes are exactly the same, the other is, if you reduce 1 volume by 1 notch or 2, the volume jumps slightly! RESPECT TO BOTH OF YOU! I LOVE, BOTH YOUR CHANNELS, AND BOTH OF THOSE LES PAULS ARE GORGEOUS! Love the ribbon flame on Tim's, an the narrower but ragged edge, flame on Jeff's! the not so usual chevron that Gibson churn out!
Very interesting how he uses the volume pot - very old school and the same way I do it too. I find that turning down from full volume to 9 I get less compression and a little clarity, then I can ride the volume down anywhere to 6-7 to set the gain for the song. Like this guy does, I also tend to use a pedal to boost for solos and leave the guitar volume where it is for rhythm (mostly). The tone pot also comes in to play as well by having the amp a little brighter than I want it, then using the tone knob to knock that back. Just means I have somewhere to go if I want a little more bite at any point.
These tones are inspiring. They speak by simply playing notes, which is a powerful thing guitar is able to do. Great interview and wonderful playing!
Great video Tim! Love to see one about, how you choose your amp eq settings.
Awesome use of the pots to get those dynamic tones.....loved it
Thanks for bringing Jeff to your channel! Such a great player!
Thanks John!
This is solid gold. So grateful Tim and Jeff. Off to the LP, Strat and Two-Rock to further explore this lesson.
Awesome video Tim. Been immersing myself in a lot of Robbin Ford lately including the guitar classes mentioned here and I discovered Robben and I are both expatriates from Ojai California. An extraordinarily pretty town with a lot of artists, painters and actors mostly. Anyway loved the guitar exchange story. Indeed why would you not advice from his brother. Blessings to you all.
Holy cow, best intro yet and there's been some great ones.
Love the lighting upgrade tim!! Full light show next episode please!
So much time in one instrument. Great job Tim, love your video’s.
Another day I'm thankful for Another Tim video - thanks for your work as ever, always inspiring - I'm considering getting some Dimarzios or similar looking pickups for my Lester, I really love their look (cream tops); unsure how I'm going to get on tone-wise, But can not wait! Have a great weekend Mr Tim! - Sam (As ever aha...)
I never walk away from a Tim Pierce video without at least one new nugget of knowledge. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I saw thank you for sharing your lifetime of knowledge with us all!
Good to see you tearing it up with the guitar, as the coaching gig with the Angels didn't work-out so well this year.
Top Shelf playing, Class, and Interview!
10:20 - you have to remember that an out-of-phase sound requires the two sources to be of near equal strength. As soon as one is stronger, it dominates the sound and the phase cancellation vanishes.
Well that was fun! Thanks guys! Maybe Jeff could feature and talk more about the LP he purchased from RF next time around 🤠
Jeff! Thank you so much! I've struggled with balancing my LP Neck and Treble pickup for a long time. I will definitely try what you you explained. If that doesn't do it, I'm going whole hog for the 50's wiring and RW neck! Thanks again!!
Peter Green, Paul Kossoff and Slowhand were masters of this. Thank you for a wonderful video.
keep rocking tim love your videos !!
One of the best videos ever..that was great..great ppl, great guitars, great info, great music,,oh did I mention it was great...
So useful and eye opening! Dude’s extra nice and humble! Please keep this collaborations coming! BTW My son and I are enjoying the course and getting better, while having a blast! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Thank you! Will do!
Thanks guys, top video. I've heard of the lost Chord, wonder when you fellas will find the lost tone. Respect and stay healthy all.
Last year, Jeff helped me purchase and understand the tonal capabilities of a Les Paul with 50s wiring. Having a good handle on all the LP controls makes a HUGE difference and I can’t thank Jeff (and his friend Angus Clark) enough! Great guy and awesome teacher. Everyone here should check out his UA-cam channel.
Thanks Michael!
You are such a great player...with GREAT tone!
I love that story about Jeff acquiring that Gold Top. His brother sounds exactly like mine when it comes to convincing me to buy an amazing guitar, especially a Les Paul.
Jeff’s DA Man! Kudos Tim!
That les Paul is a beauty man god damn I enjoy your playing as well brotha been binge watching your channel
I really love both of these guys and my big takeaway is that it makes sense to stick with your main guitar and really get to know it inside out. Ive been working the volume and the tone controls on my relatively new PRS and by stepping very carefully through the combinations of P/Us, Tone and Volume I'm finding the sweet spots. Pretty cool stuff.
Would love to hear about amp settings to make the Les Paul get those tones and to keep it clean and volume. Strats as well. Thanks.
VIPOTS from Vintage Inspired Pickups are the pots he was talking about. They are great.
Heck of a posting, thank you !
Me while looking at my guitar: Ugh I just don’t feel like practicing today. Me after watching 1 minute of this video: Where’s my pick?
I got to spend a few days with Jeff at a Robben Ford Guitar Dojo held at Sweetwater in 2018.
He's a very gracious guy and a great player as well. I learned a lot from him and I wish him well.
Oh cool! Thank you.
Tim, all the greats have tone in their fingers. Yours comes out when you begin a phrase with a pre bend on the high E with the neck pickup. There's this little extra scream that initial note has that only sounds like Tim Pierce.
Examples at 0:04 and 0:14
Thanks for sharing your lifetime of knowledge with us.
V.I.P. Pots are the best you can do for your LP. Together with some NOS Russian PIO Caps 0.015µ for the Neck PU and 0.022µ for the Bridge PU.
Tim, I really dig how you set up your guitar tone to completely respond to your hands. play soft, nice and clean, a little harder more grit and then hammer it for killer fills.
Jeff McErlain is awesome player/ teacher ,love it
I really enjoy your videos Tim. It would be super cool to see you do one on that HIWATT amp.
Pure gold. Love this one.
I use those VIP pots and they are f***ing great, perfect taper, really good tones
I'm entirely new to the world of Les Pauls after 30-odd years of playing, and there's a lot of good tips here. But more than anything, magnificent playing from both masters!!
That melodic lick from 00:48-00:52 was beautiful!
Very educative. Thanx
Tone heaven from 2 amazing players. Tim that flame on your LP is out of this world, delicious!
Man, Tim, this guy and Carl Verheyen are my two favorites that you’ve ever had on your channel!
This is one of the reasons I look forward to Saturday mornings.
Fascinating and useful for everyone "chasing tone"!
14:00 Face says it all! Thank you that's the best laugh I had all day
The Gibson Les Paul has a sound like no other. Ian Bairnson, guitarist who played on all of the Alan Parsons Project album, used to tour with a PRS with two humbuckers and a single coil in the middle because he needed to duplicate all the various sounds from the albums, but he always said that as good as the PRS was, it couldn't "outgun" his Les Paul. For recording, it's such a classic, killer sound. Great video as ALWAYS!!!
The Guy from Pilot's "It's Magic".
@@Teleman73 YES!!! The very same. My favorite guitarist. Him and Brian May.
@@budgetguitaristcom he and David Patton were on Alan Parsons "Games People Play", didn't know it was him till I saw the video.
I had a guitar that did that "out of phase" thing that sounded thicker when the volume knob was rolled off. I always thought it was magic, but it was super versatile.
Great video!
That middle position with the reverse wound pickup sounded very much like Peter Haycock from Climax Blues Band. The beginning of So Many Roads in particular.
Yeah, that nasal, out-of-phase neck pickup thing. I loved that sound. Plus the Les Paul "sustain" thing. I used to think it was a myth until I got a Chinese Epiphone Les Paul Custom that had more sustain than my American-made Flying V with supposedly better construction and hardware. Noticeably more sustain. I wonder if it's because of how the Les Paul body thickens under the bridge where SG's and Flying V's and Explorers and Firebirds don't. A decent Les Paul is a great instrument.
Jeff used to be my upstairs neighbor in NYC...great player and teacher...
Hey Harley!!
Outstanding seeing Jeff and Tim together. Could you tell us what amp Jeff was using and what the settings were on the amp? Seems like that would affect the sound you get from the guitar's tone and volume settings.
Love your willingness to share. Thanks!
Jeff's tone sounds killer!!
Cool since I own a Strat and LP. Picked up stuff in this vid I'll try immediately. I'd submit though that amp choice has more effect on final tone.
Awesome! Throbak site has an awesome video about adjusting your pickups for your needs which might sound stupid, but it sure helped me out a lot. Also been having really good results with that woman tone on the bridge pickup lowering the tone to almost nothing if someone hasn't tried that. Have a good day!
how have i never heard of Jeff? insane guitar player
Fantastic teacher, too!
I love this channel
I definitely do the Page thing with the bridge tone slightly down (maybe 8) and the neck volume slightly down (maybe 7) while in the middle position. Killer sounds. LP’s rule.
Great stuff Gentlemen...more music please
Beautiful Guitar Tim love it very coooool ~#~ Great Tone ~#~
Greeeeetzzzzz Henk ~#~ Nice Guitar Story Great ~#~
Sounds great with the Backing Track
Apologies if this was covered in the video, but I’d love to know more on Tim’s LP. That top is gorgeous!
Thats a sick flamed top on that Paul
Greatest intro 😉👍
I hear Neal Schon "Lights" at 4:08 more than Hendrix, but super cool stuff.
This intro music solo gave me chills..... Most do.
