@Mr69camarofan the Stock M's in the US had the Industrial Dodge/Chrysler 230 L-Head 6, while the Canadian units had the 251 L-Head 6. Mine has been re-powered with a Dodge 318 V-8
Wow. It sounds like you do a lot of rock crawling. You really have been busy. I see you put a lot of thought into it as well. My axles are 5.87, but I do not know the crawl ratio. I still want to drive it on public roads. I am trying to keep it military. Upgraded to 38 inch tires, electronic ignition, not much more.
@Thelaxprofisherman, The sealed military ignition system, well make sure it's all in good repair and working condition. If it is your good, if not, the parts are expensive for good ones. On my M's original 230, the distributor was shoot, but I was re-powering it with a V-8 so it was a non-issue. The M's 230 runs great now in my 49 Power Wagon though, one I switched the ignition/oil pump to the civilian unit. Hope this helps.
E30325es, Thanks. No it's re-powered with a Mopar Small Block (LA) V-8, Displacement: 323 cu. in. (318 bored 30 over). The tires are Super Swampers - IROK 39.5x13.50-17LT tires mounted on custom MRW (Marsh Racing Wheels) Bead Lock Wheels.
The truck has the stock Dodge Axles: Sttock Dodge Full Floating Hypoid Axle with Tracta Joints in the front, 5.83:1 When this Video was shoot it did NOT have lockers, that was the other change made when I swapped transmission, I added ARB Air Lockers front and rear. The M37's are out there for purchase and are more acceptable to "modify" then the Original Power Wagons', but we like to keep the Mopar Powered.
Thanks, I'm proud, but always tweaking. I've already swapped out the NP435 for one with a granny 1st gear (6.68 vs 4.56), and stalling is almost completely eliminated. The axle gears are already as low as they can go (5.83), and I don't want to go with smaller tires, so if I need to go slower, I'll have to swap transfer cases for one geared lower than the stock 1.99:1. My crawl ration is now 77.5 up from the 52.9 with the old tranny.
OK. You have a great setup on a nice truck. You must be very proud of it, and your work. You really need that lower gearing, stopping and starting on hills is rough.
I'm not sure you would call it a lot, I like following the Jeeps from the club I'm part of. I just realized those aren't the crawl rations, but the final low gear rations, sorry. I can run down the road at 55 MPH easy (~2,800 RPM) but the bead locks don't like the pounding. I picked up the truck at a low price and probably saved it from the scrap pile, as I have other Power Wagons I've built it for fun. To see more pictures google "WAWII M37" the first link should be my trucks page.
Yes, the Engine was from a 68 W200, and I rebuilt it with a low RPM Torquer Cam to improve the trucks low speed abilities. Gearing also effects the off vs on road abilities.
@Thelaxprofisherman, The Chrysler 230's that were in the US M37's is a great, solid hard working industrial engine, and will it in good repair serve you well. However, the 24 volt ignition system and carburetor may be your biggest issues as a daily driver. With the carburetor and manual choke, you will get a good lesson in starting and adjusting the choke in the cooler/cold days, it's doable, as it was for many years.
Was that motor built for a truck? Light trucks have different cams, right? I have a couple military Dodge M-880s. Very bullet proof, and simple. But not so good off road. Better on highways than my Jeep M715.
+William Watson II haha Ya. I've got a 52 m37 that I'm building to look a lot like yours coincidently. It's having issues running rn tho. Was just wondering if you'd sell it. I may be doing a v8 or cummins swap.
Getting the old military 230's running is always a fun challenge. the water tight distributors with the 24v coils always make them difficult to trouble shoot and do quick part swaps. The Cummins swaps are neat, but expensive and way overload the stock axles. Even the stock 230 is hard on axle shafts. For cost and fun, a MoPar 318 is a great upgrade.

On the road I've gotten 8mpg. I also have the stock 5.83 gears, but have the larger 39.5" tires.
Almost forgot, this video was shoot before I swapped in a lower geared Transmission, so I could crawl better with out killing it as I did here.
this is why 6 or a 4 cylinder was used. A v8 will not lug out like a 6 cylinder

I have a m38a1 but want a truck now
@WAWatsonII Me too how many mpg do you get.? i still have the original gears.
I got a 54 with a 318 in it and 5:83 gear, does someone knows what is the serial # for a detroit locker that will fit in the rear end? Thank.
sure would like to buy it !!!
Thanks, you probably couldn't afford it as the entire family would disown me if I sold it.
I understand . I don't blame ya at all.
wish i had one
NH?
One of my Favorites, but i Bought a Legend. UNIMOG
Would you sell that truck?
+MX 720 - I'd say no, but you never say never. I guess only if the offer was irresistible, but I doubt anyone would make me that kind of offer.
