No joke, this Bodies Laughing one was on Colin’s ‘In Rainbows’ studio blackboard photo. It started as another Radiohead tune like Skirting on the Surface & Open the Floodgates (and probably a couple others).
This is perfect for Thom. Playing small venues, with his strongest instrumentalist and a new and exiting drummer. Simplifying everything by operating in a 3 peace band, and not having to play those old Radiohead tunes over and over, nor having those high expectations for every release. Now it's all about the moment, the art and being productive.
@@ecg8510 I mean it's relative. It is small compared to the 10-20k arenas that Radiohead would regularly play at, or 50-100k crowds they would often play at festivals being the headliners.
@@Drenwickification i was in the first weekend of primavera and we would all sum up to 110k easily, and they played in the biggest scenario that fits around 30k people since its 2 big scenarios put together in a huge space. so if you think that a 10-20k arena is remarkably bigger than their primavera stage youre definitely wrong

I was a little sad that Radiohead may never come back but you know the essence of it is perfectly captured with the smile, hope they keep going there’s so many different styles in it too
@@MissHeathen I’m pretty sure there was only 1 song that didn’t make it onto the first album, Just Eyes and Mouth. Most of the songs they’ve played that weren’t on the album were written while touring, so it wouldn’t really be a b-side album.
I love how Jonny and Thom alternate bass guitar and 6-string guitar duties for this project. They both look like they are having so much fun. Counting the days until the NYC leg of the tour!
@@jeanmmckenzie true but the songs from first album all sounded finished when they performed them on the online Glastonbury in 2021 but then it took a year for the album to come out. I would love another album soon but I’m not expecting it this year tbh

The best thing about The Smile is how spontaneous and creative they get to make the music they create... it reminds me of the time of Hail To The Thief where they themselves comment that a song came out every week... 🎧
It's hard to imagine that Radiohead wrote and recorded Kid A, Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief from 1999-2003. Three different, acclaimed records in four years! Knowing Radiohead as they are now, it seems insane to think they managed Kid A/Amnesiac and the challenges there, toured both albums through 2001, then came back in 2002 with like 15 new songs.

Dollars And Cents has a more jazzy feel to it, and this one is closer to Talk Show Host by Radiohead and Vitamin C by the German Krautrock band Can (you can listen to it, or you may know it, as well; also I'd recommend you to listen to another track by them called Splash, and their main hits). Though, Can draws heavily from Jazz music as well - at least, in terms of performing the songs and overall chaotic presence happening on stage.

So far, all the live versions of these new Smile songs are leagues ahead the Studio versions. Honestly, all their songs sound groovier and alive when played live. I recall being unimpressed with the first Smile album, until I saw them live. The songs truly come alive. It's a shame that in the Studio versions, they've been unable to capture that energy.
It's a quite different song with the slower acoustic guitar and melancholic backing vocals actually i've come around to like it for what it is, however I remember hearing this song live and it was fucking sublime so maybe one day they'll make a studio version in this style.
They may release a groovier version of Bodies Laughing in another album, kinda like what they did with Morning Bell, there are two versions of the same song in the discography
Love this song, can't wait for them they to release it. I discovered and listening the song for the first time at TW Classic in Belgium (on June 25), and it was magic, I loved Thom's guitar solo ✨
@itayadler there is no almost, they are two different songs in my mind. The only connection is the drums and even those fail to give me anything to latch onto. If they would've kept the bass as it was, I would've accepted the acoustic and the little melody interludes instead of the chaos of this versions "solos" (not really solos, but don't know how else to describe them). Sad, but whatever, happy for the people who originally despised this song and like the milquetoast studio take.

It's far from the first time stuff like this has happened, but I absolutely agree. This one has real momentum and such a great groove. I don't get that from the studio version. Too much has been changed and I think it's lost something as a result.
