On the 7th of July 2021, a score of armed mercenaries broke into the presidential residence and killed the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, sparking a nationwide state of emergency and political crisis. In this video I explore the entire history of Haiti leading up to that point, from the Native American Taíno peoples to the coming of the Spanish and establishment of the colony of Santo Domingo with Christopher Columbus, through the French settlement of Sainte-Domingue and the importation of thousands of African slaves leading to the creation of the Voodoo/Vodou belief system and the eventual Haitian Revolution in which these slaves revolted under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture and later Jean-Jacques Dessalines to oust the French with the aide of their native and Polish allies. I will explore the turbulent early years of the indepedent Empire, Kingdom, and Republic of Haiti as they struggled against the Dominican Republic and internal problems and the payment of millions of Francs in debt to France, finally also the occupation of the United States in 1915 and the subsequent string of dictators, most famously Francois Duvalier or 'Papa Doc' and his son Jean-Jacques Duvalier 'Baby Doc' and the run of unstable elections and internal fighting between their successors, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, René Préval and finally Jovenel Moïse.

Fun Fact: Henri Christophe (the Haitian leader who came after Dessaline in the north) fought in the American revolutionary war in Savannah Georgia making him a veteran of the first two revolutionary wars of the Americas.

The island name is Haïti, Quisqueya, or Bohio. We are no longueur à Spanish colony.
Regarding the Polish Hatians . . . of 4,000 who arrived, many died, others went on elsewhere. Only 400 of them stayed, many of them in the village of Cazale.

i did visit the country several times and discovered this story of the poles as well, i have visited the place and witnessed with my own eyes how these people still resembling eastern European features in their appearances in spite of being black. absolutely amazing to see, having green or blue eyes. some even still carry polish names.

Louverture was not captured in the Battlefield, he was captured in what he thought was going to be a legitimate meeting with the French government in France but they kidnapped him instead, but he traveled to France at his own free will

His wife was not to have the knowledge that Dessaline, His men, Lomant, women, children successfully won the Revolution. They sent her to Jamaica...to live her last years.

From 2005 until 2010, Governor General of Canada was Michelle Jean, a Haitian refugee who had fled the Duvalier regime in 1967.
On May 10, 2010, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands presented Jean with a new tulip cultivar named the Michaëlle Jean tulip; with deep maroon petals; it was designed to reflect the Governor General's personal tastes. This carried on the tradition of Dutch royalty giving tulips as gifts to Canada.
During the Trump presidency, more than 18,000 Haitians left the USA to seek refugee status in Canada.

I would very much love to see a video about the Poles on Haiti. Polish historian Jan Pachoński actually questioned if the Legionaries were really changing sides and fighting for the -insurgents- freedom fighters in significant numbers, but his main sources were the relations of a handful of officers, who managed to survive, came back to Europe and continued to fight for Napoleon in the army of the Duchy of Warsaw (like Kazimierz Lux, who was also a pirate for a time). So maybe they had an interest in downplaying it? I only read a book in Polish about it ages ago, but there is also a book in English with the same author (coauthor in this case):
Pachoński Jan and Reuel K. Wilson. Poland's Caribbean Tragedy: A Study of Polish Legions in the Haitian War of Independence, 1802-1803.

From what I’ve read a substantial number(about half or a third of the original 5,000 that was sent to Haiti) did eventually fight for the revolutionaries and that after the war some left and 400 stayed.It’s interesting what those who went back to Europe and kept on fighting for Napoleon said.Perhaps they lied and said they were prisoners of war who were freed after Haiti won the rebellion

This ties in with the Vodou. One of the revered spirits in Vodou is also the famous black Madonna of Częstochowa.
The polish people were allowed to stay in Haiti because DASSILINE let them stay after the Revolution because they help him defeated the French, he expelled all French people from Haiti, but let the polish people stay, He said he wasn't mad at all white people but just the French.

18:03 Faustin I wasn't killed he was overthrown and exiled to Jamaica. Also during one of Aristide's terms he abolished the Haitian army because they were so corrupted and Jovenel ran in 2016 not in 2015
He abolished them because he scared of a second coup.

I still think one of the most interesting parts about the history of these Caribbean island nations is how the native people were basically wiped out but still have a small community that no one really thinks about

@@historywithhilbert146 haiti doesnt have them you will find them in Dominica (the british island) Dominican republic PR Cuba- haitians atthe timeof their revolution were recent arrivals from how short a life span they had they dont have the same ties their dna ancestry tests always come back over 90 percent african unless they are the few light skinned mixed people, the island was called la espanola hispaniola is to try and fuse the two countries as one with some shared origins when we are NOt
@@helloandgoodbye2546 Haitians slaves escaped into the mountains and less populated area. They created communities with small enclave of natives who also lived in these less populated area. The Taino culture became one with the African culture. For example, the countries name itself is a Taino word. The voodoo is a mixture of Taino, multiple African cultures and catholic. There are scholars who state that Haitians kept Taino culture alive.

What ever happened to Haiti's contribution to United States territory of Louisiana purchase and the Haitian soldiers that fought with the colonies to gain their independence from England. @A Velsen the English and the Scots are not the same people. They are both part of the UK now but they were occupied by different groups of people and had distinctly different histories until James l became the King of both England and Scotland

Here from Colombia: it's very sad for our nationals because the majority of them really thought they were protecting VIPs and didn't know about the true mission until the last day, too late for backing down. CTU is Venezuelan, but still the majority of the money was collected by Haitian politicians. The fact that there was no escape plan can add to the version that the operation was actually a coup de etat. Colombian ex military have worked in Afghanistan, Syria, etc for American private companies so some of them really thought it was just another "tour".
