Official lyrics for "The Archer" written by Taylor Swift:
Combat
I'm ready for combat
I saw I don't want that
But what if I do?
'Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I've got a hundred thrown out speeches I almost said to you
Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train
I ride off alone
I never grew up,
It's getting so old
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me darling...
But who could stay?
Dark side
I search for your dark side
But what if I'm all right, right, right, right here?
And i cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then hate my reflection for years and years
I wake in the night
I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire
Invisible smoke
And all my heroes
Die all alone
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Screaming who could ever leave me darling...
But who could stay?
'Cause they see right through me
They see right through me
They see right through me
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me
All the king's horses, all the king's men
Couldn't put me together again
'Cause all of my enemies
Started out friends
Help me hold onto you
I've been the archer
I've been the prey
Who could ever leave me darling...
But who could stay?
Who could stay?
Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay
Combat
I'm ready for combat

The reason why this song doesn't sound right because people are waiting for the beat to drop, but it never does. And that's how anxiety feels like.

The beat does build up, though
@@xXmlgamingXx355 yeah, but it never drops, which makes us all anxious. And this whole song is a representation of Taylor's anxious feelings.

I read on twitter that a lot of people don't like this song because they waited for the beat drop to happen but it never came. And some said taylor wrote it that way because thats exactly how anxiety feels like for her; waiting forever to feel relieved. Gosh shes such a genius songwriter, i feel sorry for her bcs she has to go through a lot of bad things🥺🥺
That makes a lot of sense. The repeating "they see right through me" definitely makes me think of anxiety
Its 200x better that there was no beat drop. It was more emotional that way.
Dang i felt the same way, seemed half baked, but i love this song, maybe she can do a remix, would love both versions.
I think it’s perfect the way it is ❤️ I have it on repeat I especially love the Bridge “I see right through me”

what does that line mean?
@@nithya1747 most of her actual enemies used to be her friends, she trusted 'em but then they betrayed her and talked sh*t bout her :/
I looked it up, what this song could possibly mean and I learned this song is deeply about Taylor that a lot of others could relate.
This song is about her struggles with her vulnerability and trust in relationship. Taylor compares herself to the archer, saying she's ready to defend herself from being hurt, but this also makes it difficult for her to let people in.
"I've been the archer, I've been the prey," is about how she has been hurt in the past, but Taylor also acknowledges that she has hurt others.
This song is about how she is afraid of getting hurt again, but she also wants to find someone who will stay with her.
"Who could stay?" reflects Taylor's uncertainty of finding lasting love.
The song ends with the line "You could stay," which suggests that Taylor is finally starting to believe she is worthy of love.
This song shows her willingness to be more open and vulnerable with her fans.
I love how you explained this... thank you.🙂
Wow this was long and I’m glad I took the time to read this thanks😊
The archer is one of her most heartbreaking and beautify written songs. Not only because of the lyrics, but because of her voice, I love how she can make you feel whatever she wants trough her voice, you can feel the pain and the anxiety trough out the whole song.
Masterpiece!
YESSSSSS 💕
@@jessailardi8908 I agree!!!!!!
❤
this could trigger anxiety. and the beat sounds like the heartbeat. genius
Just like wildest dreams but not with a steady heart rate and with a heavy breathing heart
Thank YOU ❣️ love
The beat is supposed to sound like an archer pulling back their bowstring and letting go at the end
Literally just explained what "music" is
This actually helps calm my anxiety 😅😂
This song is a metaphor of anxiety depicted in a bow. As we all know the song never drops, so as the song progresses the tension increases, much like how you pull the string of a bow, there is increasing tension. The song continues to build up until it abruptly stops in the end alluding the release of tension, aka releasing the pull on the bow. You can kinda tell based on how the bass faintly hums in the end, like a bow string vibrating due to release. So the release of tension implies release of that anxiety and pain, which symbolically means that Taylor is finally ready for combat like the last line of the song implies. But who knows maybe I'm wrong🤔🤷
I can hear the bass drop and it's like a heartbeat and I think she obvs put that in intentionally
THANK YOU 😊 I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE THIS WAY 💕

@@mthsongs3596 Taking this line alone, I understand literally she doesn't liking her self image for some reason.
But, when you take it with the line before "and I cut off my nose just to spite my face..." I understand it as she takes action/does things for revenge or whatever/allows things to happen to her, knowing it won't be good for her, then she dislikes the consequences, she regrets doing/allowing that to happen, but she has to live with that for a long time, cause what's done is done.

Sounds like a pounding heartbeat, one you can seem to relieve or slow down. Exactly what anxiety feels like a complete loss of control. Taylor is a GUINUS
i know most people dislike this song, but it holds a very special place in my heart.
my crush’s middle name is Archer, i love him so much. and the reason why this song is so special to me is not just cause it has his middle name in it, but this album also released around the time i met him.
i had horrible separation anxiety, i was terrified to be away from my family. i was failing school as well, and my parents decided to put me in a class for after school. and my crush’s mom was the teacher of the class, and that’s how i met him.
my mom had just left me there outside the building, and i was sitting outside crying on the sidewalk in the summer heat, he saw me through the window and came over and gently said “hi, are you okay?”
and i just shook my head, still crying.
and he just hugged me.
the reason why this was such a big deal was because i was having an absolutely horrible year. i hit puberty, i had no friends, and i was failing school.
and nobody ever hugged me like he did then, i felt actually cared for in that moment.
he took my hand and led me inside, and his brother was just sitting at one of the tables.
and we went over and sat down, and he introduced me to his brother.
and all of us from then on became best friends.
the only reason i have an appreciation for 2019 is because that’s when i met him.
and honestly i’m so thankful that i was put in that class, because if not i wouldn’t have ever met him.
i love you, jackson.

LOVE YOU TAYLOR💘💘
In All Too Well we had a climax because at the end of that song she wanted to show off her pain in a sort of "furious" way. It was the cry of desperation of a 20 year old girl.
Now, 7 years later, she's a woman pushing 30 and she's got a different way to react to hurtful situations: the general tone is more somber and reflective, mirroring her (new?) ability to cope in an adult-like way. She's in a stable relationship and she can reflect on her fear of losing it all in a sad but mature state of mind. No need for a climax.
omg this is such a thorough analysis i love it

Who could ever leave me dealing... But who could stay 💖
for me the first part of "they see right thru me" is about how people around me just saw past me and never tried to know me on a deeper level. but "can u see right thru me" is asking a specific person is they can see my pain, my hurt, my suffering, my anxiety. however that person, just like the others see past me and hence the second part of "they see right thru me" and in the end, even i myself started ignoring my own self, "i see right thru me".

That’s when the song got to me. That lyric hit me deep down
Taylor”who could stay”
Me:well I’ve been listening to ur songs since I was eight so I CAN STAY
Me 22222222222
I’ve been listening since I was like 6
YAAASSS!!! And we will continue to listen to her songs for the rest of our lives...
Be been listening to her since I had an iPod which is when I was like 4.
I started listening when I was 4 so I can stay to
"I've been the archer, I've been the prey. Who could ever leave me darling, but who could stay?" I just LOVE that line!!!!!
This is one of the best songs ever written hands down
when I first heard it I dropped everything. I listen to it over and over and over that's how beautiful it is and if it didn't get the credit it deserves it's because whoever was judging it hasn't been through what she and other people have been through I think the song is flawless
And yes I will like my own comments as I love all of your sweet comments to her. T you have saved me with your talent, music, smile, sweet personality and kindness to people. My fiance is in the hospital right now and you're getting me through it thank you
It's like if Getaway Car and Wildest Dream had a baby 💓
Exactly.
TRUE
"Getaway Car" thats what it is called ik it was the mix of the genres of two of her songs couldn't think of the name to "Getaway Car" thanks though!
Lol
And if the baby way born in the 80s
Taylor's strongest weapon is her impeccable songwriting skills.
"Only" the strongest among many many others. :-)
That's funny because her songs are written for her she just sings them and adds autotune 😂😂
@@drishyashah2463 Don't feed the troll! ;-)
If you think she writes all her song your under 25 and living in bliss enjoy it👍🏽
@@larryjane4926 Why wouldn't she write the songs herself? Or do you mean ALL by herself? Because she has co-writers at least for most of the newer songs. Still HER songs, though. Do you write songs? Because I do. And just because my band co-writes them of course, it's still my song if the idea and the lyrics and the main structure are my creation.
This is probably one of Swift’s most underrated songs, in her whole discography. The fact that the beat never drops and how it stimulates anxiety turns off other people but brings me in. It’s not EDM it’s synthpop….!!!! Also, the bridge just hit me different than other people.
This song is so healing, yet also SO heartbreaking at the same time. I just can’t explain it. Every time i listen to it, it feels like it’s healing my heart but also break it in the best, most pleasant, slowest way possible.
This song holds a special place in my heart. The day this video was released, was a very hard day for me. I left my family for the first time and went to France for my education. I was staying with a family who treated me so badly. They yelled at me all the time and looked down on me. I was missing my family, trying to focus on my studies and handling with the family that I was staying with at the same time and one day when it was all too much I just started crying in my bedroom. I felt so alone, thousands of miles away from my family and friends, but suddenly I got a notification on my phone. It was Taylor, releasing The Archer lyric video and at that moment I felt like she was there with me and she was telling me that everything was going to be okay and stop crying . Thank you Taylor, you may never read this comment but thank you for making me feel not alone. You were there for me when I needed you the most and I will always be there for you too. I love you.
are you okay now darling🥺 stay strong!!❤
how is france?? did you make friends??
@@buzzcutseason142 France is great, yes I've made a lot of friends and my French really improved! :)
I hope you’re doing well now! Stay strong archer! ♥️
@@ann_vocado The way this comment made me smile... Thank you! ♥️
“Cause all of my enemies started out friends”
This hits me differently 😢
Yeah nearly made me cry!
Same 😧
Fr tho
I find it so meaningful when she sings "they see right through me" and then "I see right through me" like.. the swift of the point of view is showing that she is so vulnerable that even she can see through herself
“And I hate my reflection for years and years”
“I’ll stare directly at the Sun but never in the mirror”
😢😮🤯
Taylor Swift: All of my enemies started out friends
Justin Bieber, karlie kloss, katy, kim, kanye west, scott, scooter braun's faces just flash through mind.

@@goreswelskey8003 yasss
@Lily Holly mangagirl huh?
@Amelia De groot kinda. Karlie stood with Scooter over Taylor in their fued so they're not really in speaking term for sure .
All I can think about is hearing Taylor perform this acoustic on a summer night at the Lover Tour surrounded by 70,000 light up bracelets.
Alex Luque yesssss !!
Ikr. I still have my light up bracelet from the Reputation tour.
Imagining this made me tear up for a little bit
Alayna Jones Saaame!
Omg😭😭
You know it’s been a really bad day when you can finally say you understand The Archer
It hurts how vulnerable Taylor is when it comes to relationships according to Lover album because of multiple heartbreak and gaslight. I'm so happy she found her the 1.
