    I’m pretty sure a part of my bi awakening was the fact that 12-year-old me thought Mabel was the most relatable character on the show and I simultaneously shipped her with both Mermando and Pacifica. Apparently I wanted a fishboy to serenade me with a guitar AND I wanted an enemies-to-lovers arc with a secretly nice rich girl and it just flew right over my head.

    When you started talking about compulsive heterosexuality, it threw me straight back to when I was fresh out of high school, stuck in a cycle of trying to find a boyfriend, having a knee jerk reaction mentally whenever one attempted to get physical (i.e. kissing, hand holding, hugging), and breaking it off.
    Even though I know who I am now when it comes to my identity and sexuality, I still struggle from time to time with that nagging, “You should try dating a guy again, it’ll be different this time,” feeling whenever I happen to meet one that I click with on an emotional level. It can be frustrating.
    Awesome analysis as always. Your perspectives are genuinely eye opening.

    Awesome video essay!! When I watched Gravity Falls, I was comforted a lot by the characters' acceptance of "others" and how they were always embracing things outside of the norm. Little things like Mabel having artistic and detailed sweaters, or Dipper befriending so many weirdos. I am and always have been "weird," queer, and gender non conforming so seeing these characters and events in a show taking place nearby (I live close to Oregon) was really comforting.

    Something else that's important to discuss. Disneys extremely quick to take credit for representing minorities and/or the LGBTQ+ in their movies and shows despite the fact that they either represent them as villains or cut them all together. All the credit goes to creators like Alex Hurst, and Dana Tarrace, matt Braley (not to mention Rebecca sugar even though she's involved with cartoon network and not disney) who fought tooth and nail in order to get these characters on air. They deserve the entire world

    As someone who is a huge fan of this series (having that exact same sweater your wearing 😁) I have kept mostly to myself when it comes to the Fandom. I am aware of the general things. Fan art , some riskyyyyy fanfiction (you know what mean....gross) and updates from Alex H. But I never really looked into this. This is fascinating, and makes wayyyy too much sense honestly. As a newly discovered Pan woman this truly makes my heart happy. Thank you for making this amazing video 😁

      Thank you so much for sharing! This is definitely a fandom that I am hesitant to truly dive into, but I used to be big into it when the show was still airing. Back then, it was mostly just conspiracies and fan theories (at least on the side of the internet that I was a part of)

    When you talked about the trans Dipper theory/headcanon, something clicked for me. I've always related to Dipper (hell, I even dressed up as him for Halloween this year), and the fact that a lot of his struggles were things that could be read as him being trans makes so much sense. It also makes a lot of sense that I would see myself within those struggles since I'm a trans demiboy.
    Btw the rest of the video was really awesome as well! I only recently discovered your channel but all the videos of yours that I've watched have been amazing!

  • @burntbeanies7886
    @burntbeanies7886 2 роки тому +15

    Edit: I remember adorable Dipper for breaking gender stereotypes and showing off the dangers of toxic masculinity, but I never saw it as him being trans. But, it definitely makes sense! And that interpretation only makes me respect him more, being able to deny becoming a manly man to those he once looked up to in order to see himself as his own version of a man is pog. I feel really bad for Alex because clearly he wanted representation and was pushed down, I remember when i first saw the storyboard of the elderly lesbians I was so mad at Disney (still am) and owl house being cancelled just makes me even more pissed, we had a taste of what a proper cartoon unafraid to show queer characters was like, and it was swiped from our hands.
    Anyway really great video essay, Gravity Falls will always hold a special place in my heart for being the cartoon that introduced me to more shows with overarching stories (excluding adventure time, but jesus is adventure time in it's own boat) and I always love seeing other peoples different perspectives of it, makes me want to rewatch the show all over again.
    Unrelated: I will edit this with an actual review of the essay, but I gotta just say this...

  • @Abby-vf1jf
    @Abby-vf1jf 2 роки тому +7

    I could 100% see Mabel as a lesbian, but as an asexual who’s desperate for representation, I could also see her as ace. I know on the surface, that sounds silly, but here’s my reasoning: a lot of asexual people might not get crushes, but they feel like they NEED to have crushes to adhere to societal norms, so they’ll choose a crush at random without having any real feelings attached just so that they seem and/or feel normal. That’s where I see it with Mabel cause, like you said, her reasoning for her crushes are always very surface level things. (Heck, she could be BOTH ace and a lesbian and it’d make sense).
    Ford is also aroace and no one can tell me otherwise.

    I’m actually disabled and AroAce, and I adore this show with all my heart. I also absolutely love the idea of A-Spec (AroAce/Homoromantic) Ford. I can relate to both the constant prejudice he faced due to his physical differences and the ‘found-family’ aspects/stereotype-defying, queer reading of his character. He viewed the world through his own unique lens and found solidarity in his love for all things Weird.

    As a newly discovered trans man, looking back at it now, I've always saw myself in Dipper when I was a kid, heck he was even my favorite character. His weird obsessions with the otherworldly, his fragile insecurities about hinself and his masculinity, and him feeling obligated to fit in with the norms of society. I related to almost all his struggles and even to this day. Thank you so much for shining light onto this topic.

      When i don't know whether to headcanon a character as allo or aroace, I usually sortov combine the two. Like here for example, Ford could be gay aroace, it could either mean he's arospec and acespec and still experience sexual/romantic attraction in some way, or he doesn't experience sexual/romantic attraction but another type of attraction (like platonic, aesthetic etc...) that he deems important enough to include as a label. Idk if i worded that right.

    Ok so l think dipper and Mable would like in a family that pushes gender sterotypes on their kids, because Mable like "feminine" things like makeup, pink, and stuff like that. And in the episode where they go to the abandioned store, Dipper puts on his lamb costume and it has a pink bow, something that is "girly" and Mable says something like, " He always wore it when he was a baby" And that might be why he might get really uncomfortable wearing it because its "girly" ldk why l wrote this when you mentioned dipper being trans l thought of it :D

    It’s funny how most of the queer fandom sees Dipper as transmasc, when I see my own experiences as a transfem person. When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to grow facial hair or for my voice to drop so that I wouldn’t feel like a failure as a boy anymore…. that if one thing or another happened, I would finally “feel” like enough of a man. Dipper’s insecurities really mirror my own as a trans girl that took 23 years to realise.
