As an American (born and raised), I never understood some Americans hostility towards arabs. I found this documentary quite informative. In which you can tell your King was a man of and for his people. And no some selfish person who cared about his personal wealth and riches...Hence being materialistic. I've always found Arabic culture fascinating. Because of how grateful and peaceful your people are. And will only act threatening when only approached with a threat. And that's called self preservation. A natural human response. My only regret is that the west and arab world are clashing. And when this clashing ends. I sincerely hope it brings our two people together and closer. I can definitely understand how others in this world, have such animosity towards America. However, I understand that animosity is towards the American government and not its people. Currently, the American government approval rating (amongst it's people) is 9%-12%. So essentially, most Americans agree with the outside world. Our government should be concentrating on its own borders and people. And stay out of other countries affairs. I find if this was followed. The world would strive to reconcile with America. Which would only benefit all nations on this planet.
Thank you for posting such a wonderful documentary.
    Respectfully submitted,
    Dr. Rick S.

This is fabulous. The Sheikh Zayed clips must have been 1966 or so, just after he deposed his brother. His driving a Chrysler up and down the sand dunes while singing is a classic.

Glad you guys enjoyed the documentary and thanks for all the positive comments. I believe that the footage is amazing and it shows how one person's vision for his nation and for the future of the country can impact so many lives in a very positive way.
Now for the negative comments that I received I have to say one thing with the help of Mark Twain:
"Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. - Mark Twain"

I have taught Social Studies in Dubai, and had to review the history of the UAE. This documentary made it much more "alive" to my students than just the dry facts of history. The video also beautifully illustrates the inspiring role & impact -- and lasting legacy -- of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan. In this, the year that the country celebrates The Year of Zayed, it's good to get such an overview, to appreciate his legacy, and understand why he's so revered.....

I lived in Abu Dhabi 1966-67 but was 3 years old! I have my first memories from that time but the memories of my sister Louise are more relevant... After watching the whole film she asked me to post this on her behalf:
"This film took me back into another lifetime - wonderful long ago memories
I visited my parents and baby brother in 1967, my father was with BP - I eventually got a job with Albert Abella company (the only importer of fresh flowers for their supermarket) and of course major construction company in those days. -Two flights a week - Walk through airport, tiny building - Flowers were sold before they hit the shelves there were no trees or roads in those days- the first roundabout was built and restaurant was opened before I left- there were 300 British soldiers still at that time- one hotel run by a greek family and construction everywhere, everywhere, with every nationality of architects builders engineers etc etc
I used an indian tailor in the souk who ran up a dresses from material also bought in the souk, in a matter of hours! I lived in the "Phillips" apartment building I think so called because of the billboard on roof- I doubt that will still stand today.
Thank you for good old memories."

Harold thanks for you comment and conveying Louise's message to us all here. I read your comment a few times just because I really enjoyed reading Louise's experience here when it all started. As I was reading what you wrote I could imagine a black and white film being created in my mind from the words that I was reading. We are an American couple living here for about 3 years with our little daughter. This has been an amazing experience.

I have been here 5 years and have read a few books on Arabia now ......... I love this documentary, gives you a great sense of Sheikh Zayeds struggle to create a modern Abu Dhabi that will benefit his people, how to spend all this money, what to build first the questions must have been infinite. A great ruler who comes across as firm but fair and who had the vision to create a better world for his people. Well worth spending 52 minutes watching.

UAE has come a long way from a fishing hamlet to a modern society full of the tallest, biggest, largest of all that the people wanted. Rulers had an intelligent vision and this is what counted. It may have taken awhile, but looking at this document of how things were....

This is a surprisingly well done documentary, especially considering the time in which it was made. There are only one or two minor factual inaccuracies. Baba Zayed was a truly remarkable man with a truly enormous task. His humbleness, pragmatism and piety are apparent both in this documentary and in the legacy he has left in his small, but very important country.

First of all, thank you for uploading this. I've always been intrigued with how the UAE has prospered and developed from just a desert. This shed a lot of light on my questions I had. It seems like Sheikh Zayed was the right person at the right time for this country. It's neat to see how he balanced the old way of life while always looking forward. Thanks again for uploading, and I have a better understanding and appreciation for the UAE. Always fascinated with how well UAE has prospered in an area where there is a lot of controversy.

This is a guess as I'm not a TV expert, but I'd imagine this broadcast was from 1967 or so, because of the Rediffusion London logo at the start. Rediffusion was a British ITV company whose brand disappeared in 1968. To those who know Abu Dhabi: would a date of 1967 seem right for this? Whatever the case, it's a fascinating historical artefact. Thank you for uploading it. :)

Very interesting documentary indeed! After so much rapid transformation and an abundance of foreign migrants settling in Abu Dhabi it is good to see that some of the traditional customs have been maintained. Hopefully the younger Emarati generations will be able to sustain such traditions, despite the riches many enjoy today....
