@jaygames3905 data schmata. It wasn't proven that it does. The boomers in congress just want it gone cause they're afraid of the Chinese government. I'm not saying I like tiktok. Frankly I want it gone. But it's just the U.S. trying to do something that seems meaningful in the eyes of old people.
It really is just about taking out the competition, if they actually cared about our data, they would put up ACTUAL laws protecting our data from apps owned by other countries. Tiktok isnt the only chinese app, its just the biggest. If this craze goes on we should probably expect to see apps like Shein and Temu be banned aswell.
It's not just apps from other countries collecting data. There is no regulation as to WHOM can buy the data from "American" companies, you realize this I hope. Meaning all a foreign country has to do, is set up some company in the US and buy the data that way. Why would Bytedance sell TikTok? There’s still plenty of users outside the US. Also this whole banningTikTok thing is really silly and kinda feels authoritarian to me.
It's not a ban, if you have TikTok on your phone after the bill passes you can still use it. If it were a China style ban you would be arrested and thrown in jail for having it on your phone.

I never in my life believed that anyone could compete with Omar and Lewberger for accuracy, speed, and amusement in the delivery of my world news.
A tiktok ban would breach the first amendment, so they can't ban tiktok as the constitution is the only thing that gives the government any authority, so breaching the first amendment, basically makes them a threat to freedom itself.
It’s not a breach of the first amendment, because the government isn’t banning you sharing ideas or the stuff on TikTok, it’s banning that platform that sells info to china.
TikTok success stems from the fact that musically related people to their music, their ambitions. And what they wanted to explore with their message. That database is critical to their Central content creators. None of the other companies have it. And they're not going to be able to sell this space until they do
Apart from the content creators losing a platform overall we as consumers would be better off without extremely short form content like TikTok, UA-cam shorts and reels.
Article 1 Section 8 is going in strong on this one, nothing Byte Dance can really do but throw a tantrum. Likely big players will buy it up, but it will probably be a company that could gain it with little fight from the FTC, so Microsoft for example has no video service could get a hold of it, or the weird suggestions like Oracle obtaining it. Byte Dance may still have the ability to keep a share of Tik Tok, namely under the 25% foreign investment rule.
One reason why American social media platforms haven't resorted to outright "manufactured consent" is due to foreign competition. So, the problem isn't what American social media plaforms are doing TODAY, but what they will do once their COMPETITION is gone!
