I had a old neighbor that was a chill cool dude, but had severe trauma from Vietnam. He was an alcoholic and drank straight vodka for breakfast. When he would get buzzed or drunk he'd start to cry and everytime he'd cry saying how his men died and he sas his men dead and that the Vietcong would chop off some of his mens heads and place them on a tall sharpened end of stick or branch that they placed sticking out of the ground. That man has passed away now but he never got over it. Not that i ever expected him too. He was a good friend. We'd sit in his backyard and smoke cigarettes and listen to old 60s and 70s music. I wish he couldve had a better life. Rest in peace John!!!

Dunno man, for me this argumentation makes no sense.
Killing people has nothing to do with "bravery"
I mean, I get that a world without military is not something that could work probably and definitely not something that would happen. But how those people are celebrated and how people thank them for murdering other people is just wrong.

I remember hearing stories that field medics would have to fight off venomous snakes, spiders, insects crawling over the wounded, but the worst story I was told was a field medic having just patched up a soldier who received a bad shoulder/arm wound in a mortar hole. After jumping to another mortar hole he looked up to check on the person he just fixed. And the person was being dragged by a tiger through the jungle, needless to say in the middle of mortar fire and bullet fire in every direction and no one to call for support. The man who got dragged off didn’t get rescued.. war is hell

Having known many ex-servicemen both family and friends, I've found the ones who tell the most stories were usually the ones who didn't really see much actual action.
The one's that didn't " including my grandfather and great uncle who both had numerous medals" were unassuming and reluctant to speak about it.
Sadly a lot of our history is told by people who weren't directly involved in it and many of those " Stories" Appear as Written fact by lesser hero's, many of the real stories are taken by ex-servicemen to their graves

Adrina The Great yeah my great grandfather was in the motorpool in Korea. He’s still up and kicking but I don’t see him to much. I’m pretty sure he was at Chopin, which was a pretty bad battle. My grandmother told me some things he told her about mechanics he did, but he fought, and that’s the biggest part I’m sure he’s never spoken on if at all. I’m sure there’s a lot more that is interesting and could be good to hear before he’s gone, but I’m pretty sure I’ll never hear it.

This combat makes the combat in Iraq and Afghanistan look like child's play. Not taking away what today's soldiers are doing but the Vietnam war was close combat and very scary. Many soldiers still missing. There are soldiers remains still out there in the fields and jungles and nobody looks for them. I suppose there are too many mines and booby traps that would be still lethal today for anyone to take the risk. I know in Vietnam limbs are still being lost and deaths caused because of unexploded ordinance..

101st Army Airborne Infantry, my father's outfit during the Korean war. My father was shot during his 2nd winter there in 1951 by a Chinese sniper. They didn't think he would make it and he was found laying against a tree by the Turkish soldiers who were fighting for the UN. They put him on a chopper, on to a MASH unit, and then almost 5 months at the Army hospital in Tokyo.

Probably not ONE of them ever served. Regardless of when it is or where it is, when called upon, YOU GO! I miss my brother, he served in the Army for 21 years. He passed away in 2010 from the effects of agent orange. He was the one that enlisted me at 17 yrs old and I went on to serve 12 years. God Bless ALL of our Vietnam Veterans. As one who was there with the 1st 327 Inf. I think I speak for anyone who has fought in war. Like politics "All War is local". You have little to nothing to say about the whys of a war starting. You are a soldier who has pledged to fight for a country that you love. In Battle you fight to stay alive, protect your buddy, and accomplish the mission. Hopefully you fought an honorable fight, and came home to deal with the ghosts who followed you home from combat.

That is where Samsung came from for example. Had North Korea taken over it would have been lost and poor all these years. So in Vietnam we only lost for think two major factors, the media coverage showing the people back home the brutality of war and making America look bad. Plus, the politicians back home not staying out of it and letting generals win it for us.

In 1970, the Army had 65,643 deserters, or roughly the equivalent of four infantry divisions. This desertion rate (52.3 soldiers per thousand) was well over twice the peak rate for Korea (22.5 per thousand). It was more than quadruple the 1966 desertion-rate (14.7 per thousand). WWII peak was 63 per thousand, which, incidentally, occurred in the same year (1945) when more soldiers were actually being discharged from the Army for psychoneurosis than were drafted.

You're right about 'Nam. The terms of engagement were severely limited to the point of making victory practically unobtainable. For example: during WW2, imagine if Germany was limited to fighting France only up to the French border or something like that. 'Nam was a "war"/armed conflict by definition, but a very limited 1. In Gulf War 1, the coalition wasn't allowed to take Baghdad. In Gulf War 2, they were. If allowed, the USA could have taken Hanoi & or every major city in in N. Vietnam

This war wasn’t about North Vietnam vs USA. But rather China/USSR vs USA. The weapons that the NVA/VC were using were giving by the 2 communist powerhouse. without their aid North Vietnam would be gone or maybe South Vietnam is still exist today.

I doubt it ....they lost the hearts and minds of the local population ....doesn't matter how many bombs dropped .....the Vietnamese became increasingly resilient and wouldn't have been defeated. The first thing the US did was install an unpopular and corrupt president in the south ....then proceeded to burn villages and kill thousands of innocent civilians . It was a long pointless war .....

Bcuz they were afraid of China jumping in, like during Korea. So it was limited , to avoid fighting China troops as well as nva/vc. Was a quagmire in se Asia.

I've seen parts of this footage in about two dozen Vietnam videos. Either everyone used the Screaming Eagles for stock footage or this thing comes from some different unit. Odd.

When it came time for Vietnam to carry its own weight, they ran like scared rats.
We got out when it was clearly pointless to continue. We did not lose.
