The DPX is a more versatile piece of kit as you can drive it as well as EQ it, so your tonal options are more versatile. @@alecbrits you mentioned the trim driving the unit. How do you generally gain stage it? That said, you’ve seen my videos. My voice is BIG. My wife’s is actually bigger. Lol.
If I’m wanting something clean, then I open up the output to full, get the course gain as close as possible and then back off the output trim to taste. Almost no difference, but still a little bit. Or save up. Im tracking recording playing everything myself like you in this video.

That output goes through two transformers. A lot of people are finding that you get the intended sound by having that volume up and then pushing the input into it.
I believe there is an input transformer and an output transformer, by decreasing the fader output on the unit and driving the input, that gives you the “signature” tone that the unit is often asked to do.
Hi Alex, Love your vocals. In fact i thought i heard a song that sounded like you on the radio this weekend in the US. Do you use Melodyne to help create your 4 part vocals? Ie record 1st vocal track and then step up the copy a 3rd, 5th, etc?

Thank you so much Felipe! It should be great for voice over work! I have not tried plugging a mic into the Hi-Z input, but the XLR inputs are really great and quiet, so I have not needed to try that. The fact that you can switch down to a Low-Z impedance for ribbons and dynamic mics is a great feature too! I hope this helps. :)
Hey Alec. Awesome track. Considering this vs the Heritage HA81… the HA81 and not the HA73 as that’s a no brainer for the Neve, but the HA81 offers the 1081 style eq, so just wondering which you’d prefer to use for vocals between those. Cheers
Thanks so much! :) either would be a solid choice. The HA81 offers a solid range of tonal control that the DPX does not. However the DPX’s metering options allow you to gain stage the unit faster sometimes when dealing with really dynamic sources.
@@alecbrits I appreciate the feedback on that. Have also been looking at the Vintech X81 and the AML EZ1081 2U unit. No idea if there's that much between them really...
Hey Geoffrey! :) I have used it on my mic buss before, but due to the fact that there are no detents on the pots, getting accurate stereo matching was always a problem. I currently have it sat on my drum buss, and it now does not get touched at all for any other uses. I’m sure it would pair really well with most mics, so I’m sure the Telefunken would be a solid combination.
The Neve sound happens when ever you use the unit, either clean or driven it has a distinct tone. :) use the level control to get the right level into you DAW, use the red gain knob to get as much harmonic content you desire.
Hey Alec -- you seem to be a fairly confident person, and i see a lot of comments commemorating you for the incredible quality of your demos and reviews. But just on the off chance you need a boost today... I really enjoy the compositions you make. They're extremely musical and very very *not* stiff. You seem to have really cracked the trifecta when it comes to generally making music. Good gear, good practice, but first and foremost .. musical music (lol). From what i see i think you're in a very good position to become a class A producer for huge acts, because i do believe you have it all. Thanks for the review and music
@@alecbrits I was wondering if different RND gears sounds very different from each other. I mean I really love the harmonic and classic sound of 1073. I already have a TLM 103 and i plan on purchasing a Shelford channel and using it only for vocals mainly Rock/RnB. My question is should I get the Shelford channel or go with something like 8801?
Hey! :) the Phoenix has a more comprehensive EQ and the DI is stunning on it. I think the Neve has a more signature tone, and is financially more secure over time. Hope this helps!
love this video Alec! The review is fantastic. The fisheye part of people complaining about the neve is hilarious. The song kicks ass too! great vocals and harmonies. Do you think it still makes sense to get a 1073 if you have a UA Apollo 8xp that has the 1073 plugin?
Thank you so much! 😂 was fun to shoot that. I think that it depends on your workflow. If you are in a position where you are happy with the results the UAD 1073’s give, then you don’t need to buy the neve’s. For my workflow of mixing and tracking in hybrid, the 1073’s are in use almost every day. :)
Great video again. I’m a little late though. Quick question. Can you send the digital AES outputs to let’s say, a MOTU 8D. Then send the analog outs to the console for monitoring and tracking at the same time?
@@alecbrits I know the MOTU can receive the AES signal. Problem is I can’t find any documentation on the DPX digital module and it’s full capabilities. How old is the module? I mean it’s still rocking FireWire ports lol Anyway, I’ll email Neve maybe they have documentation. Thanks!
hello alec i have a question i have this dpx and im learning to use it do you recommend using only the eq part of it on individual stereo instruments while mixing? since its not detented i know it cant be used on stereo bus what about stuff like pianos if i visually match controls
Hi Alec! Amazing video, thanks for that! I have a question and I was hoping you could help me with that. I just bought a 1073dpx, the digital card for the dpx and I also got the portico II Master bus processor. I use an apollo 8p interface. I want to establish a digital connection between the apollo and the dpx. Is that to be done with spdif to aes cables together with bnc wordclock cables? Second question is how best to connect the mbp. Should I use it as an insert in the dpx channel or is it better to connect it to the clean outputs of the DA converter on the dpx. Help is really much appreciated! Thanks!
Hi Lieuwe, thanks for the comment. With regards to the AES/SPIF I’m sure that should work, but I would read the manual on the DPX and see what they recommend. For tracking I would assume the MBP would be used in the insert before ADC. For mixing, it could be a dedicated insert in your daw using the Apollo. I hope that helps!

@@alecbrits Thank you so much, greatest explains.
It is honor for me ,learn about sounds.
God bless you.
Hi there, what snare drum you have? (Sounds fantastic!)
Hey! :) it’s a Yamaha Steve Jordan signature with a coated single ply head.
@@alecbrits Ohhhh it makes sense... great sound man. Thank for answering.
Btw, have you heard if there is a difference of sound between the 1073 SPX/DPX and the 1073N? I’m asking because some people say there is. Thank you.
@@preciseaudioblog I am not too sure of the differences. I would assume the N to be different to use as it does not have an output attenuation pot.
@@alecbrits Got it. Thank you!
I keep watching this video. Do you ever use this on your mix bus? Hoping it would work well with my Telefunken TF29 mic.
How do you set up the Level in comparison to the red gain knob? for that Neve vibe ..
The Neve sound happens when ever you use the unit, either clean or driven it has a distinct tone. :) use the level control to get the right level into you DAW, use the red gain knob to get as much harmonic content you desire.
What is the headphone amp like? Detailed and lacks nouse . Thank you.great song
I don’t think I’ve used the headphone amp very much on these at all. :)
What’s your thoughts on AMS 1073 DPA for saxophone and vocal recording? Read so many bad reviews on it. And also others recommending.
I’ve been recorded through one so many times, they are great mic pre’s for sure! :) really versatile.
@@alecbrits I’ll go for it then. Can’t afford the one showed here. Thank you
Very cool video!
Thank you Raúl! :)
Man, you're fkn talented, why aren't you famous?
Thanks for the very kind words! :)
@@alecbrits Thanks for the great video, so detailed
MAN! You're a one man Del Amitri!!!
Thank you so much Johannes!
This is extremely kind and perfectly timed. Thank you so much for making my week! :)
@@alecbrits Hahaha im glad it was. You really do deserve it Alec :-) Take it easy
This vs shelford channel ? What’s your thought ?
I have yet to try the shelford channel :) but hopefully I’ll be able to try one this year.
I would personally lean towards the shelford, just as a side note, what mic pre’s are you using currently? :)
@@alecbrits UAD La 610 Mk2.
Hey Alec, nice review…how would you compare this vs the Phoenix Ascent two you reviewed a wee while ago?
Hey! :) the Phoenix has a more comprehensive EQ and the DI is stunning on it. I think the Neve has a more signature tone, and is financially more secure over time.
Hope this helps!
Are those buttons crooked ,or are me eyes playing tricks on me ?
They are not fully square. :)
so m looking over spx..what is the difference in sound in these dpx and spx?
Fairly certain they are the exact same. :)
YES!
Thank you! :D
love this video Alec!
I’m not too clued up on the Motu pieces! But I’m sure if you emailed them they would be able to point you in the right direction. :)
Thanks!
I think AES is universal as far as I’m aware. I think mailing Neve would be the best course of action for sure. :)
hello alec i have a question i have this dpx and im learning to use it do you recommend using only the eq part of it on individual stereo instruments while mixing? since its not detented i know it cant be used on stereo bus what about stuff like pianos if i visually match controls
Trust your ears and print what ever you land on. That’s honestly how I used it for mixing. :)
HI Alec, thanks for great video! Question, if you had a chance to compare Bae 1073 eq vs ams Neve 1073 dpx eq?
I’ve never had the chance to try a BAE unit yet! :)
@@alecbrits Thanks! 👌
@@alecbrits thank you! And thanks for making great video's!
Very nice sounding i hear from yours recordings.
For acoustic music, guitars, bass and vocals
which preamp would you recomend t88rLB +1073eqLB 500 combo or spx1073?
Thank you!
If you are looking for a little character then the 1073SPX. If you want it to be more open sounding, then the 88RLB is the one. :)
@@alecbrits thank you! :)
Hi Alex, I have shelfords and Bae 1073, how similar are those? Build quality? Are those up to the 'name' of the 1073 ? Thanks
I would lean towards the shelfords personally. :)
Sounds too great!!
Thank you! Love the unit. 👌🏽👌🏽
