Choro Q is such an interesting racing game series and it's also hilarious how many different, yet similar names the games have outside of Japan.
I only played "Road Trip Adventure" so far, but that is an absolute gem of a PS2 game.
Good music is almost guaranteed in every Choro Q games, same goes for Bomberman really. Bomberman Land is a title I remember seeing on multiple platforms, but neither did I know that these were different games nor did I actually play one. But they look fun, so I should try them (maybe start with one that got a western release though).
Suzuki Bakuhatsu has been moderately popular in the past few years (for an obscure japan-only PS1 title), but it's absolutely justified! It's a unique, fun and weird experience.

One fun thing about the Choro Q games is that we in the US actually got another of them during the PS2 era, Gadget Racers/Penny Racers/Choro Q HG. Absolute little gem of a game and the gadget system makes every race and track extremely unique. Propellers to increase water speed, floats to move over water without sinkingg to the bottom, skis to have better traction on snow, gliders to take short cuts, etc, etc.

I don't know if its word association because you said the word sunny, but the guitar part of the ChoroQ racing music sounds like it would have fit nicely with a 90s show like Baywatch. Its easy to imagine the main characters having a boat or jet ski race to those upbeat twangs. This is going on the must play list when my xstation mod comes back.

Game 2 : I'm so glad you at least mentioned the ChoroQ CarRPG franchise. It's a very unique oddity series that could only have come from the PS1/PS2 era. There are some reviews floating around for the localized games by Yuusha, I believe. Check it out.
Game 4 : My first instinct seeing it was "It's a Chunsoft game" (Close enough, it seems it was developed internally at Enix). Chunsoft much later made 428 Shibuya Scramble, another insane live-action/FMV style VN.
Enix went real experimental with their catalog in the PS1/2 era just before their merger. This seems like a passion project of a bunch of friend.
34:54 That is one hell of a result screen card.
Also recommend watching this LP, which provides a lot more info and history on this game :- ua-cam.com/video/Mrz8GZ4Xv7s/v-deo.html

Haha, I remember buying Guntu Western Front, way back when. It was always listed with the genre abbrevation of "STG" which stands for "shooting". Bought it in the hope that it's a 2D shoot'em up but alas, it wasn't meant to be. But damn, this music...
First time I am hearing about Suzuki Bakuhatsu. That intro alone immediately sold me.

@@SeanSeanson Well, imagine you go to the movies to see Flash Gordon, but actually they show Flesh Gordon. Something like that. But it's interesting how I really didn't like that janky old game with it's horrible framerate back then and would have loved to throw it out of the window, but now... you kinda look back more fondly. Also the time that passed puts some things more into perspective it seems.

Aw man I Love the Choro Q games! I managed to beat CQ3 pre patch with my very limited japanese knowledge and context. The series music is great.
The tamsoft trilogy has a big following among Choro Q fans. From fan remixes, and a fan game that tries to emulate its handling quirks.
I do wish there would be a game like Road Trip again, but with less jank and more polish.

There is a very good Choro Q game released on PS2 in PAL territory called Road Trip Adventure. Man, back in the day, I LOVED this game, I played it hours and hours (despite having bad controls) ! It's exactly the same game as the wheel provided, but with better graphics of course, a very huge map with lot of places to explore, lot of mini-games and secondary quests, a radio soundtrack in the GTA-style with memorable music, and of course, the racing and RPG elements. So for me I was interesting to see how it plays on Japanese versions, I'm glad you played Choro Q 2, you manage to play and enjoy it but without the English patch I think it's nearly impossible (I'm a physical release only player).
Also, interesting that Bomberman Land was chosen, I played the DS version years ago, and it's exactly the same kind of game than the PS1 version (same level design, same graphics, same kind of mini-games,...).

    • @SeanSeanson
      @SeanSeanson  3 роки тому +2

Lots have been recommending Road Trip Adventure specifically so I'm definitely gonna try pick up a physical copy for the collection.
I know there's a lot of home console versions of Bomberman Land but I get the feeling it would shine best as a DS game, I always enjoyed mini games that utilized the touch pad and other DS features so I'd hope they took good advantage of that for the two touch games.

I've got to say, some of the Guntu music is absolutely fire, my favorite is the one for the ending (ENDCG) - I took the effort to extract and upload the games music in a nice little playlist on my channel. Think about how few people actually heard that piece: You had to own the game and actually finish it. Presentation for this game really is hideous (I wonder what it looks like with duckstation high res and wobbly textures fixed)... and even if the gameplay might be solid, the game/level design as you said just seems so damn boring.
