I love how they emphasized Hook's fear of a clock ⏰. Neverland is supposed to be a place where time stops. Nobody ages. Kids stay kids, adults don't die. They wrote it in a way where both kids and adults can relate. Kids don't wanna grow up, and adults don't wanna die. But for Hook, they made it so that a crocodile swallowed a clock amd now the ticking turns into Hook's fear of his life ending. Either being eaten alive or by time passing by, he is aging and dying naturally. I think that's a brilliant metaphor.
I don't care what anyone says, this is the best kids' movie. It doesn't talk down to you and actually deals with concerns I remember having as a child. As a same time you can painfully relate to it as an adult. Jack tearing up when Hook says his father doesn't love him because he actually believes it, and Peter's happy thought being becoming a father always makes me cry.
The fear of ticking comes from after Peter cut off Hooks hand he fed it to the crocodile that had also swallowed a clock. The croc liked the taste so much that he was constantly hunting Hook trying to eat him.
also the ticking clock and the croc was also meant to represent hooks fear of death, representing age and time taking its toll on him. that’s why Hook remains in Neverland, becasue aging is slowed there even for adults like him.
@@mckenzie.latham91 it's not slowed. You dont age in Neverland. Only the amount of time you spend outside of Neverland accumulated to the age you grow. He was out killing other pirates and looking for Peter in the real world, I think that's why he got older anyway
@@Yugioh420 Well in this movie's universe adults like Hook may age. They never state when Hook and Peter's rivalry started but if we assume Hook was in his 20's when he arrived in neverland and I think Peter may have already have been there for a long time by that point so minus the roughly 20 years Peter was gone (he was 12 when he left and probably 30s by now) thats still a couple decades he could have fought Hook as a boy
@@digitaladventurer2142 hook was in Neverland before peter pan. It's all one universe and all of them so far anyway have all coincided with each other in one time line. Hook didn't start to age until he left Neverland, he even mentioned in this movie how he smashed a certain clock after he Gutted a notorious pirate and set his ship a blaze. How many pirates did you think there are in Neverland? He clearly was sailing the seven seas of the mortal world looking for pan. And while Peter aged 20 years or so putting him in his mid 30s hook who was already in his 30s if not 40s is now in his late 50s early 60s. Trust me I've seen every peter pan movie over a thousand times. Animated or None.
"I can't believe Rufio died!" Yeah, this one is way darker than the Disney version. Also, the Disney version leaves out some important bits from the original story to make it more child friendly, like when Tinkerbell (who is so small that she only has room for one feeling at a time, because that's how emotions work, I guess...lol!) Drinks poison to save Peter, or the quote, "To die would be an awfully big adventure," all of which are referenced in the movie. And I really like how they turned it around and said "To live would be an awfully big adventure." That's a really positive message to come out of this.
@@moonbrooke27 I just recommended that in a comment! It's a beautiful movie. I really enjoy stories that are played with by different people at different times so you get a lovely story that varies slightly depending on who's telling it. Shakespeare plays are an obvious example but Peter Pan has had that happen as well. I love it!
Heh..yeah...and in the book, the lost boys were more like murderous banditry. It was said that under Wendy's influence, whole days could pass without them killing even so much as a bear!
@@jean-paulaudette9246 not so much murderous bandits as street urchins self trained to survive the streets dropped into a fantasy world where pirates run around killing anything they like. They already grew up in the darker side of life so survival among this land was the next step. Add in there role models are fairies who only hold onto one emotion at a time, and you got some dark little bastards running wild in the woods. The lost boys, street urchins lost to the world of society first then the world at large next. No morals no manners, no regrets
One amusing side note is that Charlie Korsmo, who played Jack, quit acting to become a lawyer upon growing up, which he was good enough at to be recognized by President Barack Obama in 2011. You have to wonder what Peter would think.
It's funny that this is a kids movie with adult references and themes like talking about not doing drug in the 60s and having a guy being tortured by scorpions... oh the 90s.
The film was nominated for 5 Oscars: Best Visual Effects Best Makeup Best Costume Design Best Art Direction Best Original Song. The film was a critical disappointment, as most cited to be too dark for a kids movie, while it made $300 million dollars at the box office against a $70 million dollar budget, which was a lot for Spielberg. He would later direct JURASSIC PARK and SCHINDLER'S LIST in 1993.
@@suicunesolsan I mean, adult critics judge kids movies all the time. Just because this particular judgement doesn't agree with yours doesn't mean it's a useless endeavor. If kids judge kids movies, they'd give a film a low score if they don't like the chair they're sitting on or if they need to pee but can't.
I'm also glad Peter's happy thoughts evolve as he gets older. Kids are easier to please, and have very little to worry about. So their happy thoughs are child-like wonder, simple things. But as an adult, Peter doesn't find happiness in a lot of things anymore. Adults are so stressed and depressed, that it takes more to make them happy. Peter has been sad for so long, he forgot why he left Neverland in the first place. Once he realized his family is more important than his career, he finally feels happy. His priorities are in order.
John Williams' score, Flight to Neverland, was used in the trailers for Pirates Of The Carribean, Wall E, Toy Story, and countless other Disney movies.
Yes Rufio really dies. They didn't coddle us back in the day. And Tinkerbell has always been in love with Peter Pan but she is only a fairy and it can never be. When she becomes human size she takes her shot but Peter remembers he is married and lovves his wife and has 2 children he loves. So Tinkerbell has to deal with it and let him go. Pretty intense stuff.
Shit all the young kids in my family are watching insidious, conjuring etc. Say what you want but not a good "kids today" dig I'm 33 not a kid just fyi so you don't think I'm defending them cuz I'm one of them
@@thickerconstrictor9037 This is a movie made for kids. That's what I'm referring too. Movies made for kids are typically very sterile now. Yes, as a kid I was watching Arnold movies and Friday the 13th movies as well. Plenty of parents don't let their kids watch that stuff though.
"They were the same age before so why is she now significantly older?" Because in Neverland, children never grow up, so people in Neverland don't age, and Peter stayed there decades longer than Wendy did.

Lol, love how his words seem to blend as he says don't try to stop me and then says try to stop me.And the way Smee kisses Hook's cheek after he gets all maudlin again, XD
LOVE Dustin Hoffman in this movie. Some actors just fit a role, that’s how I feel about Hoffman playing James Hook. Excellent choice, excellent reaction!
What’s hard to wrap my head around is the fact that this was a totally unexpected casting choice at the time because he had only played really serious dramatic roles before then (except Tootsie of course lol). But I’ve grown up with this film and the Focker series and Kung Fu Panda, so it’s funny to think of Hook as out of his type xD
Fun fact, the kissing couple on the bridge that lift into the air as Tinkerbell is carrying Peter off to Neverland..... that's Carrie Fisher and George Lucas!
This movie had so many iconic moments and one liners, it's just impossible to forget once you've seen it. From the Lost Boy making Peter smile and finally recognizing him, to Hook's last words being "I want my mommy!" The whole thing gives me happy tears thinking of it. 🥲
Odd as it may sound, Captain Hook was based on a real person. He was a minister in a small town who successfully hid that he had once been a prolific pirate, even though he had a prosthetic hook hand. He claimed he lost it in an accident, but it was cut off in a skirmish.
Watching this film and Good Morning Vietnam back to back really drives home how Williams was doing totally inverted roles in them. In Vietnam, he's a funny, goofy guy stuck in a serious situation, while in Hook, he's a an uptight, serious guy stuck in a weird, silly situation. Not every comedy actor can do both so well (another who's great at it is Steve Martin; just compare The Jerk and All of Me).
Tinkerbell is in love with Peter, so she wished to be big enough to be with Peter, but Peter loved his wife, she knew she couldn't win, and like any one who truly lives someone she let him go. But will always be by his side as long as he travels Neverland.
My grandpa took me and my brother to see this upon its release. We loved the movie and so did my grandpa. It probably helped too that grandpa could drink a beer since we were on the balcony. Gotta love Wisconsin!
One of the things that made me love this film was how they set up the atmosphere of the history behind the film Hook and peter pans presence is built up quite a bit before we meet either of them (Hook in Neverland and Peter when he finally remembers) Spielberg was able to get you to feel the nostalgia, the history and the connection between these two characters and everything so well
*Fun Fact* : Steven Spielberg was going to cast Michael Jackson as Peter Pan in this film but MJ felt the whole point of Peter Pan was that you don't grow up and this version not only got older, but forgot his past, became a lawyer and basically put his kids on the back burner. And I'm glad it didn't work out because NO ONE could play this part like Robin!
The ticking clock fear was also because the giant croc (who ate Hook's hand) also ate a ticking clock. So when you heard the ticking, the croc was near-by..hoping to eat the rest of Hook. Which he finally did 😀

There’s a lot of cool things that you don’t notice at first in the film. like when peter goes into the nursery and he sees the history of Wendy and her brothers going to Neverland painted on the walls, as well as the hook latch for the window. when Tootles wakes up from Nanna 2’s barking you see wendy's brothers, michael and john's hat and teddy bear from the original journey to Neverland when they were kids, as well as the bottle Model of Hooks ship, the Jolly roger when Peter and wendy come home after hooks napped their kids, you see a long tear in the wall from the door, up the stairs to the nursery which was hook using his hook hand to leave a trail to lead Peter to the site of his children’s kidnapping and Hook's note When Maggie’s singing the song about not being alone, you see all the private transfixed but Hook, whose made uncomfortable by the song and leaves this is because Hook is incapable of love and fears dying alone, he cannot connect to the song because he’s so black hearted he’s incapable of understanding the love behind it, and not being alone. etc. etc.
@ 14:10 That's Glenn Close as the male pirate being put into the boo box! 10 years prior to this movie, she played Robin Williams' mother in "The World According to Garp" Just a little FYI!
I love how Peter immediately acquires his classic green tights when he discovers he can fly. 😂😂😁😁. Spielberg does his own Clark Kent to Superman moment with that decision.
I can think of a number of films with Williams were he plays it straight throughout the movie and it’s amazing just how versatile he was as a performer. “One Hour Photo”, “Insomnia” “August Rush” and “Awakenings” are some of my favorites.
Still don’t know why so many people dislike this movie. The casting of Smee, Hook and Peter were perfect. And the scene that always gets me is when Peter remember his happy thought and goes back to being Pan.
Even though I know the boo box pirate is Glenn Close, it still amazes me. I love this film for so many reasons and have watched it more times than is probably okay. LOL Glad you watched it too :)

It amazes me that the old lady make up they used on Dame Maggie Smith here actually turned out to be pretty accurate for what she ended up looking like thirty years later.
12:18 "You are NOT...in Kansas anymore." Funny you say that because most of the movie was filmed in the same stages they shot The Wizard Of Oz back in the 30s. In fact you spoke that reference on the scene where the Croc clock is which is the exact spot where Dorthey said those lines. The Pirate Town was on the same stage as Munchkin Land and the Dock/Pirate Ship set was on the stage where they filmed The Emerald City. Most of Hook was shot at Sony Studios in LA, which was formally owed by MGM in the golden age of Hollywood.
When it's winter, to this day, whenever I'm visiting my parents and it happens to be snowing, my mom opens the door, yells "IT'S SNOWING" (In the German dubbed version he says "ES SCHNEIT JA!") and slams the door on me. I'm 40 and this will forever be my favorite movie.
This movie gets way too much hate, even from Spielberg. There's just too much to like in it, and that everyone in it approaches the story and its implications about growing up and facing the stresses/traumas of the real world so sincerely is a pretty powerful thing, tbh. Not to mention the sequence where Peter remembers how to fly is honestly great.
@@veronicagross7458 A great moment for sure. I actually haven't seen Hook in full in maybe twenty years, but I remember watching this in theaters as a kid and it's always stuck with me.

I freaking love this movie, it has my favourite lines from a movie EVER = Wendy : "So Peter.... your adventures are over !". Peter : "Oh, no. To live... to live would be an awfully big adventure !! "
I usually don't comment on videos that have been on UA-cam for a significant amount of time, but what I have to say is worth the commenting. There is a story from the set of Hook that I thought you'd like to know. Steven Spielberg, at the same time as the filming of Hook, was producing a made-for-TV cartoon Christmas movie based on one of Berkeley Breathed's comic strip stories. The cartoon is called A Wish For Wings That Work, and in it Robin plays a manic depressive Kiwi in a flightless birds support group. How he got the role is the story. Berkeley Breathed came by the set of Hook to show Spielberg some storyboards, Robin was passing by, and seeing the storyboards proceeded to act out (in full Peter Pan costume) the kiwi role. He was offered the part right then, and his voice was recorded that night. Dustin Hoffman was given the role of a cockroach, who's single line, it is said, took him about four dozen attempts to get right.
I still absolutely love this movie. There is so much fun and heart in this movie. It's just such a feel good movie all around. It's sad that it has this mixed reception, which I just cannot understand at all. It's just wonderful.
Even tho I’m 11 months late and someone probably already explained that to you - Wendy is significantly older than Peter because Peter Pan always was the boy who’d never grow up. If you want to stay at Neverland you can’t grow up, ever! That’s Peter‘s rule. If you start to grow up you will have to leave. Wendy decided to grow up at the end of the original story (same for her brothers), so she aged on meanwhile Peter remained a 12 year old- ish boy. Now in this Maggie Smith aka grandma Wendy has said that Peter only decided to leave Neverland, and therefore to grow up when he saw Moira (his now wife) for the first time and fell in love with her. So at that point Wendy probably already was a grown woman. Since Peter Pan in the original story doesn’t have a mother because he fell out of his trolly as a little baby and became „lost“ (and therefor also forbid all of the other „lost boys“ to have one/ think of theirs - another one of his rules If you want to stay) Wendy decided to adopt him and raise him as like he was her own child. Another important thing worth mentioning is that If you stayed at Neverland but decided to return to your parents and to grow up you will loose your memories of Neverland and all the adventures you’ve encountered. They will fade away and soon will only feel like a distant dream you’ve once had when you were a child. Same goes for everyone who stays at Neverland for too long, being the reason why Jack in this starts forgetting about home. That’s why Peter doesn’t have his memories anymore, now that he’s all grown up. Wendy however is the excuse (big metaphor for the reason why that is exactly) and even tho her brothers forgot about Neverland and Peter Pan and their adventures- she never did. (probably because Wendy never actually chose to grow up and was more forced to but always remained a child at heart). Really recommend you to listen to/ read the original story which is actually quite scary If I’m being real honest. It’s kinda like a dark fairytale, meanwhile the Disney movie (even tho beautiful and amazing!!) is a lot less gloomy but more light hearted and sweet. I’d recommend both actually. ♥️🙋🏼♀️
RIP, Robin Williams. Also this movie is a guilty pleasure. Michael Jackson was considered to play Peter Pan, while David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Tim Curry were considered for Hook. This movie was in development hell since 1985, and it was supposed to be a musical from Paramount Pictures. Spielberg wanted the film to he dark and serious, as well as being a family adventure film.

Trust me I've seen every peter pan movie over a thousand times. Animated or None.
"Before you were born, they were happier." Damn! Captain Hook going for the jugular vein on that one!
I would have liked to hear him start on about Bonnie and Clyde after that.
"I can't believe Rufio died!"
Yeah, this one is way darker than the Disney version.
I love Hook as a sequel, but my favorite adaption of Peter and Wendy is certainly Peter Pan (2003 film).
I love it!
@@woodbbl same, I also recommend Pan as the Ultimate prequel
At least he was in Can't Hardly Wait before he quit acting.
So, He's become a pirate..
Also initially Michael Jackson wanted to play the role of Peter....
@@diggerdog9205 I love that line.
Quite possibly may have saved his mental and emotional stability if you consider what happens to a lot of child actors or just actors in general.

It's funny that this is a kids movie with adult references and themes like talking about not doing drug in the 60s and having a guy being tortured by scorpions... oh the 90s.
And talking about suicide and how the kids parents were happier before they were born. I remember side eyed my mum so hard during that scene 😂
" near sighted gynogologist" xD lol. So many good lines
The film was nominated for 5 Oscars:
Best Visual Effects
Best Makeup
Best Costume Design
Best Art Direction
Best Original Song.
The film was a critical disappointment, as most cited to be too dark for a kids movie, while it made $300 million dollars at the box office against a $70 million dollar budget, which was a lot for Spielberg. He would later direct JURASSIC PARK and SCHINDLER'S LIST in 1993.
Bah, leave it to adult critics to judge a kids movie. When I was a kid, Hook was my favorite.
I’m a 90s child and for me this movie is the biggest trigger for nostalgiaIt, it makes me so homesick I almost cry every time I watch it.
Bob Hoskins played the role of Mr. Smee in both Hook and the two-part TV adaptation called "Neverland".
This movie literally makes me cry... I think about the animated movie and I think about how wendy grew up without Peter.😭
Say what you want but not a good "kids today" dig

"They were the same age before so why is she now significantly older?"
Because in Neverland, children never grow up, so people in Neverland don't age, and Peter stayed there decades longer than Wendy did.
She figured that out when Peter said the same thing in the movie.

Really? Do you know his name, or remember where you read that? I teach a class on pirates, and that would be a fun factoid to include.
“Wait... ain’t you...?”
“Peter Pan”
*Jumps out window*
XD
I'm not gonna lie I find all those lost boys cute as hell but that kid at 18:42 was just so damn adorable
"YOU ARE A FART FACTORY" might be my favorite line in a movie, ever.
Tinkerbell is in love with Peter, so she wished to be big enough to be with Peter, but Peter loved his wife, she knew she couldn't win, and like any one who truly lives someone she let him go. But will always be by his side as long as he travels Neverland.
HOOK, HOOK, SHOW US THE HOOK!! HOOK, HOOK, GIVE US THE HOOK!!
My grandpa took me and my brother to see this upon its release. We loved the movie and so did my grandpa. It probably helped too that grandpa could drink a beer since we were on the balcony. Gotta love Wisconsin!
One of the things that made me love this film was how they set up the atmosphere of the history behind the film
Hook and peter pans presence is built up quite a bit before we meet either of them (Hook in Neverland and Peter when he finally remembers)
Spielberg was able to get you to feel the nostalgia, the history and the connection between these two characters and everything so well
McGonagall is actually one of my favorites characters from Harry Potter. I had a pet tarantula named Minerva after her.
The pirate that was put in the boo box was the amazing actress, Glenn Close.
He really did lose his marbles.............LMAO yea he did.
I suggest "Bicentennial Man" from 1999! A very underrated Robin Williams movie.

@martinbraun1211 : YES, my favourite RW movie !!, SUPER DUPER UNDERRATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .
Which he finally did 😀
Which is where the original Peter Pan song, Never Smile At A Crocodile comes in. 😀

The man who plays Mr. Smee in this movie, Bob Hoskins, also plays Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was an amazing British actor.
There’s a lot of cool things that you don’t notice at first in the film.
like when peter goes into the nursery and he sees the history of Wendy and her brothers going to Neverland painted on the walls, as well as the hook latch for the window.
when Tootles wakes up from Nanna 2’s barking you see wendy's brothers, michael and john's hat and teddy bear from the original journey to Neverland when they were kids,
as well as the bottle Model of Hooks ship, the Jolly roger
when Peter and wendy come home after hooks napped their kids, you see a long tear in the wall from the door, up the stairs to the nursery
which was hook using his hook hand to leave a trail to lead Peter to the site of his children’s kidnapping and Hook's note
When Maggie’s singing the song about not being alone, you see all the private transfixed but Hook, whose made uncomfortable by the song and leaves
this is because Hook is incapable of love and fears dying alone, he cannot connect to the song because he’s so black hearted he’s incapable of understanding the love behind it, and not being alone.
etc. etc.
@ 14:10 That's Glenn Close as the male pirate being put into the boo box! 10 years prior to this movie, she played Robin Williams' mother in "The World According to Garp"
Just a little FYI!
This was my favorite film, as a kid. John Williams' score is awesome.
I love how Peter immediately acquires his classic green tights when he discovers he can fly. 😂😂😁😁. Spielberg does his own Clark Kent to Superman moment with that decision.
Also, you have to see Stardust!
Robert De Niro as the gay (dancing) captain, steals the show! :D
I can think of a number of films with Williams were he plays it straight throughout the movie and it’s amazing just how versatile he was as a performer.
“One Hour Photo”, “Insomnia” “August Rush” and “Awakenings” are some of my favorites.
Wow, Prince Zuko really used to be rude to fairies back in the day.

Funny you say that because most of the movie was filmed in the same stages they shot The Wizard Of Oz back in the 30s.
Ever since we lost Robin I haven’t been able to finish this movie without breaking into tears

I forgot about Hook's suicidal tendencies.
I still absolutely love this movie. There is so much fun and heart in this movie. It's just such a feel good movie all around. It's sad that it has this mixed reception, which I just cannot understand at all. It's just wonderful.
The actor of Mr. Smee (Bob Hoskins) played as Mario on the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie
oh NO
Even tho I’m 11 months late and someone probably already explained that to you - Wendy is significantly older than Peter because Peter Pan always was the boy who’d never grow up.
Curry did play Hook in the sadly forgotten Fox series Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Hook: “Peter’s here again! Time to go fuck with him!”
Um….yes? 🥴🤣
