I feel in the first season they wanted to shape this relationship as a romantic kinda relationship cause there was tension between them but changed the path and thought they are better off as besties
True. They distanced them a lot as the series went on. I am so disappointed they cut the steamy scene between them in the pilot. They should have at least included it on the dvd/bluray release.

I feel like the first season took a little more from the comic than the other seasons. If you know the comic, then you know how their relationship is.
