The SMS version is a really good port, but the original arcade version still holds up as the best one. Best graphics, best sound, best control, none of the tracks are cut for space and that epic feeling of playing on a big stage as you're running down the maze-like corridors of the Labyrinth of No End in hopes of reaching the final boss. The only thing people might not like about it is that it's considerably more challenging than the SMS port.
Even though I am a die hard SMS fan, I'll agree the arcade version is best here, especially the music by far. I think the best way to experience it is on the Wonder Boy collection for Switch, making use of those save states

Also, I love how death takes for hits to beat in the arcade version, but he takes half as many hits to beat in the Master System version, and yet he takes twice as many hits to beat in the Amiga version.
Such a shame that the PC Engine version has butchered sprite design (due to copyright issues) because it's otherwise a very faithful port. I'd have bought it since a long time had it kept the proper Wonder Boy design but as such? I don't really want it... But this version has a few other annoyances such as the fact that the main character doesn't knock at doors anymore before entering rooms which is a shame too because that little moment was priceless and integral part of the game's charm. Sega did a solid job with the Master System port which stays faithful to the Wonder Boy universe. Just a shame that this version lacks a few tunes (because no, it doesn't have "different music", it's just the same soundtrack with some tunes swapped and some others simply missing) but other than that, this version looks and sounds good, has different in-game presentation and got an exclusive level which is always a cool plus. It's a Master System classic, worth owning in any cases. As for the computer ports, that ST/Amiga title screen is quite hilarious. Wonder Toddler! :D But well, the ST version was my first contact with this game, circa 1989. I instantly loved the visuals and music and thought the game was fine as is but once I knew about the Master System port I didn't go back to the ST one and the Amiga and CPC ports are similarly mediocre but the ZX Spectrum port seems OK (given the hardware capabilities, that's it) and could the C64 port actually be good? @@marcusfred4480 Because its running software rather than using dedicated hardware. The CPU is a bit slower in the Amiga compared to ST. If they had used the hardware scrolling etc then it would have run fine. Ahhh the Amiga, the machine that could have done better but never does ;)

Because that game is a port of Wonder Boy in Monster World, a different game (although its beginning is very similar). Maybe we'll make that comparison in the future.
They should have been ashamed doing such a lousy work on the amiga port. The Master System version tramples all over it (and while we're at it, it's the definition of a well optimized port). PC Engine/Turbografx is amazing too, but that was to be expected. When it came to arcade ports, home computers were cursed with subpar programmers. Original games for the home computers were often amazing, but ports were almost always third tier garbage that were put to shame by consoles a full generation behind.
The CPC version looks bad... Another port from the Speccy I guess? I have always loved the Amiga version. As for the last, Portuguese version, what was it, a promotional version?
I like the original Master System version, and the ATARI ST version, the NES version is also good, but the mechanics, monsters and scenes change so much; so, it's another game with the same base. The Brazilian version is awful.
The graphics and sound are identical, so it's a classic case of an Atari ST port, i.e. they made the Atari version first with 16 colors and just ported it over to Amiga, without taking advantage of the improved graphics and audio features available. A similar thing happened on Amstrad where they got so called 'Speccy ports', despite being very capable with colors and sound.
The Master System and PC-engine CD versions are probably the best home ports of this great game, but I think the C64 port did quite a good job as well. This was a massive game for the venerable C64 to handle, but it looks nice and instantly recognisable, and it plays well. It's a shame there's so much in-game loading, but considering the platform and how massive this game is, I guess that was sort of unavoidable. The Amiga version, by comparison, is sort of embarrassing. It's weird how many arcade ports actually looked and played better on Master System, NES, and even the C64 than they did on the Amiga. The Amiga was such a brilliantly designed computer, it should have gotten way more love from developers. Instead, it got a whole bunch of bad Atari ST ports. :/ At least Monster Land on the Amiga isn't quite as bad as it is on the CPC I suppose. The Wonder Boy series is, imo, the best reason to get a Master System. Monster World is great, and Dragon's Trap is even better. Great series of games.
Amazingly, the SMS version is the best one I think.

Master System the only good true versin for home. Sega Powaa!
the master system version has the best sound
Atari ST version SHITS on the Amiga Version, Amiga was sooo slow. haha
Amiga is a lazy ST port (remake)
if the Amiga was made properly
it would shit on Atari ST version
Another poor conversion from Spectrum to CPC.... :(
The Famicom version was like a Chinese bootleg.
Amiga could have been a lot better, Atari at is a nice port actually
I agree. I mainly only played this on my ST. The ST and Amiga version both look and sound almost identical, except everything moves slower on the Amiga version. Don't know why the Amiga version was slow as it was just as capable, if not more than the ST?
@@marcusfred4480 Because its running software rather than using dedicated hardware. The CPU is a bit slower in the Amiga compared to ST.
If they had used the hardware scrolling etc then it would have run fine.
Ahhh the Amiga, the machine that could have done better but never does ;)
@@leighbyford635 Just a lazy port then. R_Type runs heaps smoother and looks better on the Amiga than the ST.
@@marcusfred4480 yeah R-type does, I agree. R-type 2 even more so.
They use the Amiga hardware scrolling and the blitter to move the " sprites / bobs " around.
The ST had no additional hardware, everything is done in software which is much slower.
Id like to see R-type made for the megadrive. Someone has done a perfect shinobi in homebrew.
You didn't compare the dynastic hero in this video, how come?
Because that game is a port of Wonder Boy in Monster World, a different game (although its beginning is very similar). Maybe we'll make that comparison in the future.
@@retrosutra Isn't monster world just a genesis port of monster land?
@@retrosutra okay, i know when i'm wrong. Monster world is wonder boy 5 and monster land is wonderboy 2. You're right.
AUGH ITS REAL
SMS HAS AMIGA AUDIO
AND ITS NOT THE AMIGA VERSION
HOW?!
Amiga could try make a port of Pong and still fail.
But the Amiga port to the game pAng is not a fail
Link downlod
No
Wow the NES version... Shouldnt even be considered the same game. More "inspired by"
I like the Monica version!
The ZX Spectrum Looks Like A Game boy screen
I like the original Master System version, and the ATARI ST version, the NES version is also good, but the mechanics, monsters and scenes change so much; so, it's another game with the same base. The Brazilian version is awful.
SMS version, but not the awful sounding one that's shown here
Grew up with the Master System version but also played the coin-op. The best port is the Switch one, but most have their charm.
Arcade !!!
Wow! The Atari ST beat the Amiga?
The graphics and sound are identical, so it's a classic case of an Atari ST port, i.e. they made the Atari version first with 16 colors and just ported it over to Amiga, without taking advantage of the improved graphics and audio features available.
A similar thing happened on Amstrad where they got so called 'Speccy ports', despite being very capable with colors and sound.
The Amstrad CPC really had the worst shot at this series. Both were atrocious.
"Your country's fate 'despends' on you..." Even the Arcade original had this typo. Some systems corrected it though. 🙂
The amiga one looks terrible
The ST has best music however it was known for that so no surprise
ST fanboy spotted lol
I dont think there is a CD version of this game unless you count PS2 SEGA AGES vol. 29. Exelent compelation btw.
The amiga version is horrible. Absolutely inexcusable for it to be so slow and choppy.
straight ST port with absolutely no use of the chipset.
@@dlfrsilver yep. inexcusable.
The emulator was running it in PAL while it was running the ST version in NTSC. The Amiga version runs smoother in NTSC.
@@AmigaCammy emulator ? what do you mean Cammy ? this game has been programmed from scratch.....
Not to mention the loading times - they were dreadfully long.
Jiggl for koins!
Amiga
So Amiga Wonder Boy had the Buster sword a decade before Cloud in FFVII !
