Hello there!
Here is another chapter on the mighty Elektron Octatrack. Today I want to show you few easy ways to play live with some prepared drum samples. It's a great way to add flavor to your live sets , especially if your sound palette is limited ( in my case I only have the Vermona Perfourmer and the Abstract Instruments Avalon ).
My friend Ryan sent me his new amazing drum pack ( coming soon ) and it really enhances my improvisations.
Enjoy!

I always like your videos - lots of good tips and ideas and your delivery is expressive and calming.
Thanks so much!
Beutiful loops very groovy and syncopated, and yet you bent everything your way and in your style. Since we are talking loops, i willmention a trick I ve learnt from an unnamed Elektron employee :) When you create grid and fill in with as many linear slices you want, go ond and assign lfo one to slice (start) parameter but keep all values of the lfo switched off. Then, link LFO2 to the Depth parameter of LFO1, either as a triangle, or a ramp (experiement, it is almost 90% about the loop content and number of slices) but keep it at zero. Then, create a new scene. Scene lock LFO 2 depth. Now your slider will basically "randomize" your slices but not completely, there will be a pattern from a pattern from a pattern. By just changing lfo speed on lfo 1 you can get totally new randomization. Oh and I just cant plug of Microcosm lol Favourite algo?
this is GREAT info, gonna try now!!!
@@OoraMusic It is kinda cross modulation in a way, ofc results depend on 1.the sample itself, 2. how granulated you made the sample (it is not the same to chop a 4 bar loop into 16 or 64 slices) 3. how fast and deep you are modulating the slice order 4. ofc, what kind of lfo it is, with all whacky OT custom designed lfos, tyou can do weird stuff.
Great tutorial man, so cool to hear these drum loops in action. Thanks so much!
Thanks for providing me with your amazing drum loops!!
On this, the Avalon is really singing here. I love 303s doing gentle and vocal lines like this; not a fan of heavily distorted / frantic / angry 303. I think the drum loops sound great, but for meshing with the middy 303, I think some tape saturation (or simulated) on the drum part could be nice. Alternatively, you could try amping the 303 into the room and mic it up. Getting acoustic and highly electronic to blend can be tricky; I remember some Carl Craig records where he got a good blend of acoustic drum breaks and synths/keys. I think it was the Innerzone Orchestra project, Bug in the Bassbin (or maybe the The Detroit Experiment, Space Odyssey - and Think Twice used to drive the crowds up the walls in the Manchester music clubs like Electric Chair); also the Can remixes. By the way, your microphone is sounding good placed in the room. It sounds very slightly live, but in a good way. Might not be a bad room for recording vocals in, or acoustic instruments, like guitars.
Hello Desmond! thanks for the amazing info and ideas. I will definitely try the revamping through speaker one. The room I'm using is an octagonal shaped room I used to rehearse with my band back in the days. It actually sounds pretty nice!
Great video! This is the right way to do drums on the octatrack. I do the same thing, one track for the kick and one for the other percussion. You could use more tracks for individual drum parts... but it wastes the tracks. Octatrack is not a drum machine.
Few variations on this: 1) place some one-shot trigs, armed by pressing and holding 'Yes'. One button pre-programmed fill. Think one shots are unaffected by lfo or scenes, so can be combined with these scenes. 2) Delay. Remember it is tempo synced and can be freeze locked from a scene. I like speed of 48 to create off beat hits. 3) Lo-fi can create some very crunchy percussion sounds.
Thanks for the cool ideas, will definitely try!!
Thanks !
:)
g jobs man
thanks!
Awesome videos, tutorials and jams! What kind of camera are you using or would you recommend for recording?
I used iPhone so far, but just got a Sony Alpha. To start the iPhone is great!
How did you undo the screwed part at 6:17? What kind of combination did you use?
BTW great content as usual!
very nice workflow. good tip to have a kick four to the floor as base. I'm a drummer myself so will try to record some own loops and try your approach! Question: if you just want to play the entire loop, but have only 1 page in the page/scale setting, how do you make the loop play completely (with only 1 trig on step 1)? My loop resets every 16 steps.....
Which Rotary controller is that on the left? Another great exercise/walk-through here! Cheers
Faderfox pc4 (12?) I think.
He did a video on it a few months ago. Check backwards in his videos list

Shik n32b!
thanks Oora, question: why do you use 16 bit and not 24 bit?
not sure why honestly ahah
interesting
Thanks Robert!! love your music
@@OoraMusic thank you, i like your way. i have massive problems learning my octatrack. my brain is maybe backward....
