I think this song fits so well with their relationship this season because Riley hated and loved James so much at the same time. It's pretty clear she's James' soul mate and that he doesn't really love Beth but he did be with her because she gave him things Riley couldn't give him - she never judged him and always let him act naturally, even if he acted stupidly or hurt her feelings. In my imagination, Riley sings to James the end of the chorus in the song: she explains that she can never be the girl who doesn't judge him and doesn't get mad at him when he hurts her. And yet they are back together because people care about each other's feelings in true love and don't ignore the problems or just accept them.
