I do love Eric calling it a loveletter and not a parody. This show doesn't do parody, it does loveletters and homages. Parody is mocking the original. Community only ever mocks itself. The writing team doesn't go "Man, Law & Order sucks, let's make fun of them". The writing team goes "Man, I wanna do a Law & Order episode" and then another writer goes "Oh, can we have Troy and Abed as Good Cop Bad Cop?" and they go from there. They have fun indulging with every part of what makes those things great.

The only show that they ever really mocked was Glee, and even with that, the joke is that Glee was way more popular than Community. There was also the additional meta-humor that they shared a time-slot and filmed on the same lot. It was punching up at a ratings juggernaut who could give two shits if they were making fun of them.

IMO, that is what makes community a better show than Rick and morty. It’s not shitting on the pop culture reference, but appreciating it.

Parodies don’t always mock or make fun of something, especially with the incentive of some sort of hate or thinking something sucks. Jim Carrie parodies Clint Eastwood. Do you think he thinks Clint sucks? No.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 11 місяців тому +3

@@shershersher I’ve never seen him parody Eastwood, which would be exaggerated imitation. He just does a dead on, non verbal impression of him.
But you’re correct that parody is not inherently mocking the source material/person.

ACB is honestly a top 5, maybe top 3 episode for me. Every single moment hits perfectly imo, best original song from the show, Duncan explaining "Mugscroll", the hilarious "Hee haw he haw haw he ha" sung to a Dave song... Dave Matthews. Hardcore fans call him Dave. Abed with the cups and blankets. The almost thrown away sight gag of the campus security guard heaving when he sees the quarter in the baggie. "Mmm this extra long churro tastes yummy in my REAL mouth. Nom nom nom". " Then I guess you just admitted you already owned a fake ass" (can I just give some love to Jonathan Banks. People like to hate on all community post season 3, but he was absolutely hilarious all throughout season 5, just another humble outsider who came in and nailed it).
The cinematography was great, the mood was perfect, the fact it was perpetually raining. Shirley taking advantage "$5 no change. Sorry, blame the bandit." And the tag at the end. Fantastic. Basically a flawless episode.
That being said, basically flawless could be said of perhaps half or more of the shows episodes

You're totally right about Dino/Starburns's role on the show. He's Dan Harmon's friend who wrote for the show, and Dan asked him to play a cameo in episode 101 (when Chang calls him "Senor Starburns" and you just see a quick shot of him), but it got a good response, so Dan kept having him come back. When asked about it in some BTS features, Dino said "I'm not an actor, but I'll do whatever my friend Dan asks me to do" so he's just there in every season.

Love this episode so much. I know just enough about Law and Order to get the jokes, but haven't really watched all that much of it.
I'd say my favorite procedural is probably The Mentalist. Love that show.

"The most famous guest star" is mostly a "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo" thing.
Although it is somewhat utilized on "Criminal Intent". Which often also shows the murderer upfront. As "Columbo" does.

YES!!! Been waiting for this one! This is probably my favorite episode of Community. It's so meta with the way they crafted a Law and Order episode with the Community story and cast. I'm an OG L&O fan so seeing them use the fomula so well and eveing having Leslie Hendrick as the ME, was great, because she's from Law and Order! Awesome to see Michael Ironside.
If you listen to the commentary Dan Harmon was furious they didn't catch some shenanigans some background extras did coming out of a door with the exterior hot dog scene.
Great discussion with the benefits of episodic TV. I like watching some older shows like that, Star Trek, TNG, L&O, etc... It's nice to just watch a self contained story for an hour. I find it harder to do with lots of newer really serialized shows. What episode do you tune into for just a little bit? Maybe for great moments... I don't know.

Urology: The study of the urinary tract, including the male organs involved in its discharge (Including the Penis)
Lupine: Something relating to Wolves (Canis Lupus)
So Basic Lupine Urology is literally just Basic Wolf Dicks --> Dick Wolf.

Dick Wolf created all the Kaw abd Orders abd had to give permission to use some of the stuff.
Starburns is a writer on Communuty.
The outtakes of the Dean singing them to sleep are A+.
Season 3 of List, which ended my interest, wasn't a procedural, but developed such a pattern that you knew what time it was based on what scene was happening because every episide had a flashback at the same time, and a slow motion dualog free but shortly before the end.

  • @sang1342

ya, Starburns was actually a writer on the show, and they didn't intend for his bit to be such a thing, so this was their way of getting him back off screen. He's one of Dan's best friends actually, and runs the production company that does Rick and Morty now

      @@Luke-cu7bf
      Lupine means wolf.
Urology is a medical practice involving the urinary tract. In men that would be found in the penis, aka dick.
I spelled it out in my first comment.
