Professor Davis did it all. He was also an omnipresent figure on television for decades, which meant that hardly a week went by when his extraordinarily diverse talent was not showcased in some capacity He is greatly missed.
Fortunately, we now live in an age, where we have recorded history of many great performances! And youtube, where google has provided an incredible collection of so many things at instant availability whenever we want. While I'm always suspect of corporate motives, at least right now, their service to mankind the world over is absolutely tremendous.
I had the pleasure of meeting Sammy Davis Jr at a B. Dalton Bookseller in Manhattan back during September of 1989. Sammy was in town for the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Normally I rarely approach celebrities, but wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to shake the hand of an iconic legend. Needless to say, Sammy was VERY gracious with the few minutes we chatted. Best entertainer and person ever.
I keep running into clips where Sammy does oh just one more thing, plays just one more instrument, is fluent in one more type of dance...he was the consummate entertainer. Amazing man.
Lets see. He plays piano, drums, vibraphone. He sings jazz, blues, rock, scat, pop, and standards. He does impersonations. He tap dances. He performed in vaudeville, clubs, concerts, broadway musicals, television specials, movies, records. He had a talk show, a miniseries, even a brief recurring role in a soap opera. He was as comfortable in straight drama as comedy or skits or westerns. What am I missing?
Sammy was uber-talented from childhood. A prodigy. He danced, sang, acted, and played jazz better than most people who only can do one of those things. And he was a real mensch too.
This is one of the great things about UA-cam. How/where would you ever get to see this without it? Ol' Sammy and Deano were my favorite Rat Pack members. I didn't much care for the rest of 'em, but sure liked Sammy and Dean. Sammy was such a great all-around performer; singer, dancer, actor, comedian, musician. He was certainly one of the greats (which are scarce in this day and time).
Sammy always came across as the most genuine human being. Love and Respect. P.S. Sammy could play anything, sing anything, dance anything, do anything he set his mind on......check out his talent with the Colt 45!
***** Never saw any evidence of Jackson playing drums, keyboard or any other instrument. He was a half-assed songwriter as well. Yes he was a terrific dancer but Sammy was a great dancer as well. And with a name like "Jank", you should think twice before calling anyone a clown.
+J Rodriguez You're right. And he (Sammy) could sing and dance at the same time without EVER resorting to lip-syncing on stage. That Motown 25th when MJ unveiled the moonwalk? A lot of people claim that to be the greatest musical performance in TV history! Dude was lip-syncing! What a joke.
Frank Sinatra is good and so is Dean Martin but Sammy was miles ahead of them both in the Music Department. I am surprised he stayed with them as long as he did. Of course they both afforded him the opportunity to be seen in places he wouldn't have had the chance otherwise. I guess it was a nice trade off. . .
He stayed with them, because they were his friends, and they would be there for him just as he would be there, for them. The rat pack, a collection of some of the greatest performers that ever lived.
He also played the trumpet along with being a champion pistol shooter!!! He was an expert in all of these instruments instructing his musicians who were experts!!!! Not fair God!! just not fair giving one person so much! Lol!!
People don't know what it was like to be a black musician back to him. The only way you got to ever play in front of an audience was if you transcended which means you were better than anybody else around and Sammy was one of the best. He played many speakeasies. Cuz he was cool because he was telling it he got into these places. Just like the great satchmo. They transcended racism. America is not a racist country some people may be but most of us want to open our hearts to anybody that's different than we are. Because that's what makes your soul grow. Stepping outside your box a little bit. These cats played outside their box all along man. Just like the great such mo ... Louis Armstrong too
Michael Silva, a lefty, has his rack tom on his left rather than, conventionally, his right. Very unusual although I have seen it a few times with other lefties. It worked for him.
Some people are set up to bring and share their God-given talent to this world. Sammy was one of them. God bless you, where ever you are, friend. I am very proud of the fact that you are half Puerto Rican.
I have not known him as a jazz musician. I love what I'm hearing, so I looked to see whether I could find it on Amazon Prime Music or anywhere on Amazon. I only found him as a singer, for which I have no interest. Can anyone help? Does his jazz ensemble have a name?
What happened on the ending of that? Sammy played alot of C, Eb, Bb, G. This may be the first time I heard him on vibes. He had a nice feel, but Lionel and Milt had to laugh when they heard this. I got to play percussion once in Sammy's Show. I remember there being some good parts - including vibes - and 'Candy Man' and 'Mr. Bojangles' were his BIG hits! See 7seals.blogspot.com - only the returned Christ & Albert Einstein reincarnated could produce that.
They're great entertainers in every Generation but Sammy stands head-over-heels of the most
Sammy was an astonishing entertainer. The greatest all round entertainer ever..
Professor Davis did it all. He was also an omnipresent figure on television for decades, which meant that hardly a week went by when his extraordinarily diverse talent was not showcased in some capacity He is greatly missed.

Sammy is the ultimate musician! He plays any instrument with so much ease and finish. I have great respect for his talent and gentleness.
Genius, Sammy Davis Junior was a genius. I miss him. Possibly the greatest entertainer ever.
He walked through doors others had never been through..sharp, talented, brave 💪
I keep running into clips where Sammy does oh just one more thing, plays just one more instrument, is fluent in one more type of dance...he was the consummate entertainer. Amazing man.

He was also quite adept at twirling Six-Shooters! Quite an entertainer.
witty and had lotsa charisma
Without a doubt, Sammy Davis, Jr. is the greatest all around entertainer of all time barring nobody.
Played trumpet and was a photographer
Brian Turner Funny, he was very funny
Sammy was uber-talented from childhood. A prodigy. He danced, sang, acted, and played jazz better than most people who only can do one of those things. And he was a real mensch too.
Such a crisp awesome voice. He was truly one of the kings of cool.
The World's Greatest Entertainer!
ropanueva I totally agree with you.
Richard T in the stereo band

MAN.....THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE STUFF MANN! explosive and natural talent!
Sammy always came across as the most genuine human being. Love and Respect. P.S. Sammy could play anything, sing anything, dance anything, do anything he set his mind on......check out his talent with the Colt 45!
I loved every minute. Sammy Davis Jr. - the original LIVE DJ MIX.
Holy cow, that's smokin'!!
Go Sammy go. The whole band is swinging.
So much talent rolled up in one man!!!!!!!!!
AH THE BEST! LOVE TO SEE SAMMY! THANK YOU!
Sammy... Genius. Renaissance man!
Oh, how I loved that man!
the best we have ever had
The man was simply amazing.
Masterclass by the great crooner!
An iconic legend sadly missed
King of cool...
What an amazing talent , no one like him , maybe Prince
This is what they call class.
I can't believe how well SDJ played the Bass on here... he really swung his ass off.
And he does this with one eye
This video is yet another example of why Michael Jackson can never be considered the greatest entertainer we've ever had. Sammy could do it all.
***** Never saw any evidence of Jackson playing drums, keyboard or any other instrument. He was a half-assed songwriter as well. Yes he was a terrific dancer but Sammy was a great dancer as well. And with a name like "Jank", you should think twice before calling anyone a clown.
*****
He liked the fiddle to...Nasty
J Rodriguez "He was a half-assed songwriter as well" What the hell are you talking about! He was an GREAT songwriter!!!
+J Rodriguez I agree with you on this my friend. Sammy was mega threat putting all of today's posers to SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!
Was their no end of talent for this great entertainer and artist!
Sammy was Mr versatility bar none. Those back in the day jazz sounds swing mightily, and Sammy was a great addition to the jazz sounds.
Frank Sinatra is good and so is Dean Martin but Sammy was miles ahead of them both in the Music Department. I am surprised he stayed with them as long as he did. Multi tasking talented WOW is there anything that he couldn’t do..
I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for sharing!
Compare this outstanding performance to any contemporary DJ making millions just using his electronics.....and you know where we have gone in music.
Thanks for your words.. Music is just not electronics....
Wonderful!!...A great post!!...Many thanks!!!!
A master lesson in dynamics, which is a sorely missed skill among contemporary musicians of jazz and popular music...
really enjoyed this thanks for posting :)
Everyone looks so thrilled lol
There's nothing he couldn't do.
Nice.
Pure talent.....music is colourless, is raceless, music is an art that resonates with the human soul. Just check out Physics and Wavelengths.
And people dare to compare the upstart Michael Jackson with this genius!!
Cooool. Love it. Thank you. :)
Wow 🤩

새미 데이비스의 비브라폰 연주는 정말 멋져! Good !
The Coolest of Cats
Great
I wonder how he found the time to learn how to do so many things? 🤔
Simple, He never did a days work in his life
Michael Silva, a lefty, has his rack tom on his left rather than, conventionally, his right. Very unusual although I have seen it a few times with other lefties. It worked for him.
thumbs up before it even started, haha
The bass player got nowt!
Real McCoy,huh!)
Sammy one genius.
One d'jin . Sammy talentoso.
Mucho mas que Sinatra y Dean Martin.
Sammy Davis Jr los superó con creces,
Is there a CD with this song and others with him on vibes?
MY HEAVENLY JESUS IS THEIR ANYTHING THIS GREAT MAN COULDNT DO. HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN LATER IN TIME.......
Some people are set up to bring and share their God-given talent to this world. Sammy was one of them. God bless you, where ever you are, friend. I am very proud of the fact that you are half Puerto Rican.
clavedesol57 you are very thoughtful

Song?
Who's the bass player?
GENIUS!!

You are a glib genius, Sammy, but, um, how about introducing the bassist?
I guess Sammy never met his bass player.........
vova47 yea I noticed that too, but I'm in the middle of the video. Maybe at the end?
But still, we got Google to track down all these guys!👍😎
4 mins
Ass a bassist I am very disappointed that Sammy introduced and gave accolades to every member of the band except the bass player. Bummer.
I'm not a bassist and I admire Sammy greatly but that was indeed a sad omission on his part
I think he missed it. Because a person like him would never do anything like that to his fellow bandmates.
I think he just missed it
maybe he introduced the bass player 1st and the video started late..
Music at its best! Smooth and Sophisticated.....
No love for a bassist. We play the bottom where the shadows live…
And he was black too....
How can it be some of the worst things I've ever heard? Sinatra isn't with him.
Sorry, Sam, not this time.
