    A while back my Roland JC converted me to a solid state guy. The DS-1 is more like a strange overdrive than a distortion with that amp, but the DS-2 works great with it. So to all the solid state nerds, the DS-2 is Nirvana in a box for you.

    On the rarenirvana YT channel, they released a behind the scenes recording of when nirvana was playing on SNL. It's an older video, so resolution is super low, but it's worth a watch. It definitely looks like a DS1 Kurt was using, but it was a Boss for sure.

    I've done a cover of this too. I used my normal "nice" guitar sound on one side, and HP on an OCD with the gain and level really high for the rougher sounding guitar. I used an ancient Arion Stereo Flanger (in mono) for the solo. I like your re-brand and its nice to see you back, hope you're doing OK. Want to drive yourself insane? Try some In Utero tones.

    One of the most important things you can learn about guitar (or bass) tone is that you do not need to copy the tone of your favorite artists, not even when you are covering their songs. You do not need a pedalboard that will allow you to emulate the sounds of the original artists on 1000 different songs. You only need one good tone-one good guitar, one good amp, and one good drive pedal is all you really need. The audience can't tell the difference, and wouldn't care even if they could. Stop being a slave to your gear, and just f-in play.

    I'm not even a rocker but I found this a very interesting and very well produced video! ❤
    I'm still looking for my ideal bass guitar overdrive that saturates progressively and then adds intensity just in the moments when I dig in. Sadly every pedal I've tried jumps from clean to clipping!
    Frustratingly the closest equivalent I've found is the drive control on the humble Yamaha Reface CP keyboard which really works well with the electric piano sounds by adding a bark exactly when I ask for it. I'm looking for that kind of response in a pedal. Is this something I should be using the side-chain on my amp (Trace Elliot) with maybe a compressor into overdrive then into EQ to cut the harshness?

    Excellent breakdown except for one BIG oversight; the settings used on the pedals/amps!

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  3 місяці тому +3

      Not an oversight, I simply don't want to encourage a 'tone by numbers' approach is flawed on a fundamental level.
      I'd rather promote the idea of using your ears and becoming familiar with dialling in your equipment based on what you are hearing - which is the correct approach.

    • @msmoniz
      @msmoniz 3 місяці тому

      @@ScienceofLoud Fair enough, and agreed as I do use my ears to adjust to taste, but seeing someone else's settings is a starting point in most cases, since depending on what gear everyone uses, they have a reference point and then adjust to suit their rig, instead of starting from zero which is also valid but sometimes frustrating. I know I certainly don't expect your settings to be the be all and end all but seeing how different people achieve a similar tone especially in the age of UA-cam is just part of the fun in chasing certain tones. Love the channel and the content!

    I was searching around the internet looking for some insight into something "I am afraid to ask'. I know in early amps, it was common to get a bigger sound by bridging both channels with the input jacks. Is this just the same a plugging into two amps and getting more power or is it altering the sound in some way and creating more distortion. I have a Valvetech VAC 25 that has a foot switch that said it is like bridging the channels, but it delivers much more distortion more like the output of once channel into the input of the second. I am not sure what is going on here. Thanks so much for your channel. Eric

  • @millennialanimal
    @millennialanimal 3 місяці тому +1

    I know you’re not shooting for the exact tone and I hate to be that guy, but it’s all about the speakers he used (rola green backs for the dirty tones and silver bells for the cleans), with all the IR’s out there you could have got so much closer, especially since you were using amp sims to get to where you got (vox 30 for cleans, Mesa studio pre and bassman for dirty). Also for anyone reading this, don’t play your power chords with 3 fingers, use two and bar them if you want to play it like Kurt, it’s a huge difference.

    3. The tone on the album was more scooped in the low mids.

      This song was a wake up call to the music industry that had become mired in the extravagant power ballads, inane guitar widdling, and saxophone solos of the 80s.
      It was rebellious cry for a frustrated youth looking to carve their own identity in a culture that offered no place for them, like the 70s punk movement was 2 decades before. It's very much a result of the politics and social issues of its time, so it resonates with people who were there to experience that.
      I know all of these once radical movements look tame and outdated in hindsight, but to be a young person in the 90s - this was an identity! A very loud 'fuck you' to conformity and the trends of the generation before. I was slightly too young to truly appreciate its impact when it released, and I've never been a fan of Nirvana, but I've come to really enjoy and appreciate the impact of Smells Like Teen Spirit specifically. It's has a power and impact that I feel still resonates, despite the generational landscape shifting away from the problems of the 90s.
      An anthem in every sense, and I hope there continue to be these songs for people - that redefine music and culture - that will become overplayed and difficult to understand for the people who come across them later, because it wasn't a message for them - it was a call to arms to change the world of the past, and if it did its job right, shouldn't have the same impact to kids born into that changed future.

      @@ScienceofLoud Grunge was the last time that rock made any significant step forward IMO. Soon after, rock finally stopped looking forwards and became too nostalgic for me to the point where I lost interest in being in bands. Capital Radio used to have a rock show "Music your mother wouldn't like" but now rock has become "Music your grandmother does the ironing to" - sadly including grunge.
