The Flakpanzer Restoration Project

- The lads up at CFB Borden have a Flakpanzer. Sortof. They currently have lots of Flakpanzer pieces. But they're working on it. This is where the restoration sits right now.

"Cosmetic is not in our vocabulary" should be the benchmark of all restoration projects.
You would have alot less restorations happening at all.
@@antongrahn1499 that is simply not true. It takes marketing, popular support developed through online games, and people want to see and hear the things move, feel the ground rumble and shake like a thousand horses. Cosmetic restorations just fall short of the real experience.
@@TheNVSK well, duh. Dosent mean cosmetic restorstions/preservations arent worthwhile. But functional restorations takes alot more money and time, both of wcich might be in short supply. If you cant restore a tank fully, a cosmetic preservation is a hell of a lot better then a rusty wreck in a field somewhere.
Anton Grahn please go cry poor somewhere else.
@@TheNVSK no? I dont understand the argument.
"One problem we have are the ball bearings" huh same problem the Germans had
It's cause Hogan kept bombing the factories.
@@stump182 i know nuthing....I saw nuthing
@@stump182 Try they lacked the hardening materials to harden their ball bearings: because their hardened steel and quality steel was needed to make the tools to make the tanks and couldn't be spent on their tanks outside of guns and gearboxes.
And we know how well their Gearboxes went with the limited amount of alloy material they possessed.

Wow, firing LIVE rounds?! That's gutsy- this project's going to be a very long one, but I'll definitely be keeping tabs on it since the Wirbelwind is one of my favorite vehicle designs! Thanks for sharing the effort of these dedicated volunteers!
if this project had a paytreon or similar: they'd be double their expected funding in a week with this video.
Shame really. The enthusiasm we hold for one of the rarest tanks in the world will be muted by time.

Live rounds... the advantage of being from a military museum on a military base. Hey, maybe it can used by the army lol
@@cgaccount3669 the issue they will run into is having to save the casings: as eventually the brass casings will go out of production and then you have a gun with no way to arm bullets.
Sabot Videos on youtube has a video series on the restoration... Check it out
@@glenmcgillivray4707 Doubt it will be that much of an issue, the Germans made untold millions of rounds of 20MM for their cannons, plus I think the brass can be made out of 25MM bushmaster casings with a necking die.
I think the problem will be finding four guns that work, these cannons are so old and saw no service outside of WW2,the likelihood of finding a single gun is low, finding four of them is next to impossible, ironically i believe the United states has some two dozen guns as registered full autos for civilian sale, but ITAR would make getting them to Canada next to impossible.
Four live 20MM cannons likely will cost more then the entire project combined.
I don't know if I clicked faster because it said Flakpanzer or because it said Chieftain underneath.
Yes.

Red Dave I could provide some nice targets. Have a list with names here...
The guy restoring the vehicle is how I would want to restore a tank. Restore to running order and able to fire.
jermster17 what I would like them to do to is to build a few wood based drones, fly them overhead and have the Wirbelwind shoot them down, it will be so glorious xD
It’s not a tank it’s a flakpanzer whirlwind

I hope they succeed and get this thing fully operational, would be awesome to see it driving around and firing
Does my Canadian-German heart proud to see a project like this being done . The Farley Mowat connection is just a little bonus.
My boy Chieftain asking questions like he's inspecting this dudes work
They laughed when Dave said he wanted to get the guns working, but they'll change their tune when the museum comes under air attack and the Wirbelwind saves the day. :)
No guns are available, only sources for guns are the USA as some couple dozen are on the NFA registry and Russia, but getting guns from either nation will be next to impossible, it's a lovely thought to have a 100% functional Wirbelwind, but the chances are it's not going to happen.
"Cosmetic isn't even in my vocabulary." I like this man. 100% functional restoration. That's the type of restoration I would want to see. I would LOVE to see more restorers make it so they can go the extra mile and do 100% functional restorations.
There has to be alot of extra work and money doing that, rather then just making it look pretty enough for display. 100 percent functional is Great, but not always possible given budget and time limitations.
Brilliant interview! Not only great to see a restorer who doesn’t have ‘cosmetic’ in his vocabulary, but loved the V2 story!
For me the only correct restoration is back to fully operational condition. Anything less is only preservation.
And preservation is bad?
@@antongrahn1499 if you're truly passionate about something then you should go all the way
Well the reason alot of things are in a "preservation" state is because theres not enough machinery to get them running. If you're truly passionate about restoring history you will get as many examples of vehicles as possible in running, OR a realistic time period accurate cosmetic state, look at the Maus, the only reason we have one is because it's in a cosmetic only restoration due to there only being 2 built, is the Current Maus not good enough because it isn't running? No. It's good enough considering, should we try and get it running if the machinery becomes available? Well in the Maus's case thats a hard choice because the Machinery, engine, transmission, Running gear ETC, should be in a museum in and of it's self.
Now then, the point I'm trying to make is, sometimes you have to choose on what you have to do, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Trying to get a Tank or vehicle running may do more harm than if it was a static display, it could cause damage to the body that could turn it into a static display anyway ot crack the chassis, these tanks are 60+ years old and many of them have been sitting outside for half of that and some have been blown to pieces, as such they aren't in the best condition to be running around.
If you think running condition is the only "proper" restoration, there is something wrong with you.
There's so many rare vehicles from WW2 that don't have any surviving examples that the History community would give blood for to have a Example Static or Running, don't get me wrong if you can and the vehicle is in a good enough condition you should try and get it running.
Now then im not trying to be rude or anything but wtf? A vehicle being restored to running being the only Proper Restoration is the single stupidest thing i think I've heard all year, and its something I've sadly seen to much in this comment section.
@@tex8564 god I wish the E100 hull was preserved in a museum instead of getting scrapped
It is great to see the level of commitment and enthusiasm for the project. A much better way to spend your free weekends than cutting the lawn. Good luck with it.
I just want to thanks those guys for this magnificent project, respect
Hats off to you The_Chieftain, you seem to have the knack of finding these treasures
I operated the Leopard 2 ARV that was used to move it from the tank park into the workshop back in October 2016. I pulled it on to the road and lifted it on and off a flatbed trailer. It weighed in at around 23 tonnes.
I remember that vehicle being rotting away in Worthington Park.
I hope they restore the Sherman, too. CFLRS has one as well and it's in pretty rough shape.
Wow...... this vechile along with maybe 20 other German tanks used to sit outside at base Borden for decades. When there are events on the base like airshows etc. The public could have access to them and I remember climbing on this exact anti aircraft gun back in the late 70's as a kid. Amazing!
When I was a kid on base this was probably the second coolest tank in the park, behind only perhaps the flail sherman. Glad to hear they're working on restoring it!
Restoring such an old tank to the point it can even fire again?! Holy heck that is amazing!
Hey Chieftain,Large TY for the lookie @ Borden. I spent time there yrs back while in the CAF. I remember the FlakPanzer all too well. Had NO idea it was so rare. Hope you can do a follow up when it's more complete. Meanwhile,so great to see you and doing a Canadian speed tour TY again. Semper Pat!
I hope you will help Mathias as well ! Thanks for sharing Chieftain.
A photo and a paragraph don’t cut it! A truly worth while project! A live fire demonstration would be certainly be You Tube worthy!
I went to base Borden today to see the Wirblewind and I couldn't find it, then realized it's being restored
Sooo excited for when the restoration is done, can't wait to see what it looks like!!
Great job so far
If they are able to get the guns fully functional it would be great to get a firing range data on just how effective they were. Having the functional German equipment keeps the memory alive of what our forces faced and the struggle they had to overcome. Saying it is one thing, having a working example for analysis and evaluation gives you a far greater understanding.
David C.G. Showing future generations what the Canadians fought against was the exact reason why Farley Mowat brought this and may other vehicles back to Canada
The guns in the vehicle are toast, they where demilitarized when the vehicle became a display, I think they had holes cut in their receivers, thus are non functional, they have to go source new guns from somewhere else, and the only working examples are in the USA and Russia, the US has about 2 dozen give or take transferable 20MM german cannons on the NFA registry and Russia has some working examples in museums.
buying full auto ones from the US would cost more then the rest of the project and Russia won't give up theirs, sad to say this is never going to be a live vehicle again.
To imagine they have the budget and logistics to do such projects... It's amazing. Something we only dream of. I always see old tanks around here and my heart tells me they should restored, but we barely have funds for anything
Where are you from? What kind of old tanks?

I always enjoy and learn something from the Chieftains videos, but this was extra cool! 😎👍 Something almost in my own back yard! I’ve visited the museum years ago, did not know they were doing restoration. I might have to see if I can volunteer this spring. 🤔
One of 2 in the world today, that's pretty rare! During my career in the Air Force I was at CFB Borden for my initial tech training & returned a number of times over the years for various other courses. Just love the Flakpanzer IV, “Whirbelwind”. It was an amazing AAA, and anti infantry platform. Didn’t realize it’s anti infantry potential until I started playing ASL, and had one on my OB in a scenario called “The Road to Wiltz”. Awesome video Chieftain!

What a nice guy very dedicated to a great cause.
This is going to be so cool when it's fully restored.. I actually got a chance to go back there about 2 years ago, to see what was going on, it was pretty cool..
Good on ya, Farley Mowat!
From memory the 37-mm capable Flak Panzer (Ostwind?) was issued in greater numbers to tank regiments than the 4 x 20-mm Wirbelwind. There's footage of one of these Wirbelwind parked with Mk.Vs on a Berlin city street, April 1945, waiting to defend the Reichs-chancellery. peace and thanks for post
Doc E I wouldn’t think that would make sense, since the Wirbelwind came out earlier than the Ostwind, and about double the amount of Wirbelwinds were made than Ostwinds (between 86 and 124 Wirbelwinds as opposed to around 60 Ostwinds), also would you know where to find that rare footage?
@@starwars9876-i4t I gained that impression from the Divisional ToEs given by Nafziger. See Mark Felton's channel; Battle for the Fuhrer bunker... peace
Now I think about it, any unaccounted wirblewinds may have been those committed to flak platoons of independent and Corps Tiger battalions and those of the various SS brigade-sized units.. I still think the Tank Regiments (Divisional units) mainly were issued ostwinds..
@@doce7606 Thanks, and the SPAAA in Mark Felton's video appears to be an Ostwind judging by the single barrel and the turret shape

This was one of my favorite vehicles on Metal Saga for the PS2. It was a Tank Centered JRPG game, with a barrel of giggles/laughs along with it. Imagine enemies like Giant Apples with Kitchen Knives, and an enemy General named Blueberry who's attacks revolve around him doing zero damage, while sipping a glass of fine wine, while another boss did sonic attacks by just flexing his pecks. But the Wirbelwind was one of the vehicles you could get by doing a specific quest, it was nice because you could customize it with any anti aircraft guns. My favorite combination was flat out four 37mm Flak guns.
Good luck to them, genuinely hope to see it running :)
Krupp-Thyssen made a new Turret Bearing and gear toothed drive ring for the Panzerfabrik PzKw IV, they made these parts for the original Panzer during the war. They might be able to help with your bearing problem if it is something beyond what heat and gratuitous application of Liquid Wrench can achieve. We tried making a Flak-Vierling for our WWII reenactment unit, to mount on a Ford 1,5t, used the Dragon 1/6 and 1/35 scale models as references. We had scale drawings of the Flak 38 from another reenactor in the UK. One of our crew has/had the Zf8x3 direct fire sight and the prism Visier with illuminated recticle.
This is GREAT! A runner and a gunner! Wow! Please post updates or maybe put up a F/B page so those of us from around the world can follow the progress and yes maybe even donate. Sweet!

Excellent ! German tanks, trucks equipment is so interesting ! Nice project and story's, my father was a USA WWII Vet and mentioned that equipment was all over the place ! He mentioned a few times, had he known that German helmets, equipment etc was going to have such values $ he would had brought more back with him Go ARMY
It amazes me , the prices ww2 items get; I was at an Arai action in Edmonton, Canada,a few years back, someone's estate contained numerous officers hats from various nations, Vietnam era airman gear, & some ww2 stuff- a plain iron cross sold for about $80 , yet a dented, crusty German helmet went for almost $300...( I believe it had the ss insignia on the side. maybe that's why so pricey)
* I bought an 80's Russian parachute, no lines or canopy, just harness & chute, if anyone is interested , contact me & I can email pics.@( it IS on Kijiji.ca/ British Columbia, Canada)
* I went to the auction Because there were huge boxes of unopened plastic model kits, obscure airplanes, but they went for ridiculous prices! - bought the chute, some tools, & a Chinese chainsaw!
Well, if everyone brought more stuff it would be much cheaper...and plentiful.
Very interesting project!

So just out curiosity, are they getting one of those leopard 1s that the Canadian military has surplus of?
I don't know where they're going but I heard there were no buyers so museums have a good crack at getting them. Hopefully Canadian museums have first dibs
The Borden museum has a Leopard 1 C2 and they also have a Leopard 1ARV that was on its way to Oshawa when this was filmed.
Pretty rare bird. I was introduced to the Whirbewind when I was a kid and built the D-Day model diorama kit. It came with 4 AFVs and a large two-gun bunker. Cant remember who made it tho. Had alot of fun playing with the 1/72 scale?? soldiers.
Will be very exciting and interesting to see it when it’s completed. This must be a massive undertaking. Hey maybe The Chieftain will do an Inside The Chieftains Hatch on this vehicle when it’s completed?
I've always wondered how such vehicles would perform. There's only so much information that the paper version of it provides, and reality tends to not care about the statistics on paper.
Plenty of vehicles like this were used in Korea etc., mainly against infantry due to the advent of jets. They were quite effective in the anti-infantry role.
@@Panzermeister36 I can imagine an armored vehicle carrying 4 20mm autocannons is not what infantry would like to see coming at them
Its just a 2 cm Flakvierling 38 AA gun mounted on a panzer IV chassis. The AA gun was very common in the war and its characteristics are well known. It can deliver a very high rate of fire, but the 20mm ammunition doesn't have great stopping power. The practical issues are (a) how much ammunition can be carried, (b) the barrels heat up when fired limiting the true rate of fire of the system. It can tear up lightly armoured vehicles and infantry.
Great video.
If i had money, i would donate to help the project be completed.
Good stuff.
