  • We are very very close now to having this place fish ready. A few more things need to be addressed and set up and this place will be ready to accept fish. Also, RIP Num Nums. I do not know why these redcaps are so sensitive and die so easily. I hope the rest make it out okay but at this point, I honestly don't know.

"Do not plug power strips or other surge protectors into one surge protector and ensure the devices you have plugged in do not exceed the wattage capacity. No cap
I had a power strip(2) plugged into a power strip(1)and a portable ac unit plugged into power strip(1)
      Every outlet in use 24/7
The ac started shutting on and off randomly so I unplugged it to check it out. The ac was asking for more power than was available, melted the face off that outlet.
Another time my aquarium light blew up and instead of just tripping the power strip it was on, it tripped the breaker for the whole room
Came back to the whole fish room without power for who knows how long
(Edit: I now run 7outlet power strips with surge protectors built in, plugged only into the wall outlet. When I have to use household extension cords I plug them directly into wall and wrap extra cord up in a bundle left in the open unobstructed, on laminate floor to avoid risks of overheating and fire. 👍) I know I ranted, can’t help but share safety tips.

As someone who has lifted one of those 75 gallon tanks by myself not to long ago.... thats impressive. Alots of bulk to carry lol
By the way, I found your channel from the house buying content and have stayed watching because of the basement build out! I have reef tank and drool over fish rooms like that. Probably one of the few thats not here for the goldfish content. Cant wait for the fish breeding building to be restored!

11:02 Suggestion: Please center the four tank sets on the wall with space on the ends for access. Mostly, put more space between the tanks of water and your electrical panel. This will keep splashes and corrosion issues farther away and for service of the panel if needed (since this is early in your build, that is a cautious move). In an emergency, you won't have time to move a set of tanks if needed. Might even be an electrical code in your area about distance from objects.
Also, I would suggest to not place a tank under the window due to temperature changes, and ease of access if you need to pump water outside/light issues/etc.

I suggest that you keep all the electrical lines off the floor and find a way to attach them on the wall behind the tanks. Also don't bring in any of those sick goldfish into the fishroom once it is running since disease can easily spread through droplets and water vapor in an enclosed space, especially if you have splashes from sponge filters. You would'nt want to start out having every tank already infected from the get go. Have a few quarantine tanks in a different room or have other tanks relatively farther away from the main group, and equip them with tight lids and a separate waterchange system.

Watch your back Luke, as someone who's slipped a disk at a young age, I can assure you it's really unpleasant. Also, I've kept red caps unsuccessfully sooooo many times. They are probably the hardest fancy type to keep. Any temptature change any levels of stress, a change of food, and they pass. I've only found success with one I still own today, he lives alone though and need constant monitoring.

Glad to see the fish room is coming together It is definitely giving me ideas of how to set my next fish room up better. In my experience a lot of the Petco PetSmart arandas and red caps and other goldfish don't always do the best and I don't know if it's poor genetics or just the conditions they're in when they're shipped from the supplier to the store and then being in a stressful store environment then they just become weak over time and generally die quickly that's been my experience anyway

1:03 My OCD senses are tingling~~ Just a suggestion, cut a piece of PVC pipe (or cardboard tube) in less than half (so it fits over the pipe to be drilled). Place on pipe to be drilled and rotate it until it rests against the wall on one side. Mark on cut section where you want the pipe drilled. Even line can be made by placing cut pipe on table, lay a marker flat on table, then run marker down cut section which would be parallel to the table. Saves time in setting up drill points for each station.
Another suggestion would be to offset every other valve by a 45 degree angle so the valve levers would not be in line, in case you have to turn them in opposite directions (facing each other). Also, offsetting would make counting valve number easier in a blind setting where you might have several valves in a row, but easier to reach back without getting on a ladder or other item to better see valves.

  • @askjeevescosby2928

The water softener may be killing those fish. Since you have well water, you are most likely using water softener salt. It has additives to help lower corrosion in pipes. I was keeping a blue gill, and it died when I put it in water from the tap. You need conditioner in the water even though it doesn't have chlorine it still has other things that are bad for fish.

Rest in peace, num-nums, forever, loved.
Speaking of these red goldfish, being really sensitive and unable to survive anything, we have a similar problem, with at least in my experience on the saltwater side of things with blue green chromas. They seem to be like super delicate. I had a whole school of six of them survive, only a couple of months even with a perfect system.
I asked the shop staff and they said that they have a high DOA rate.
I just don’t like to buy fish, no matter how pretty if they’re just too sensitive and not gonna buy it because of the two sensitive to be a pet maybe it shouldn’t be a pet.

Might be a little late, but it would be super easy to just run some electrical cord along the wall, and put some nice looking electrical boxes at the location of each tank. One end could even just have a plug if you want to just plug it into an existing box.
Better option would be to add the line to your electrical panel, but ya.
Would remove the huge amount of power strips, you could put GFI plugs in it (like your bathroom) so any shorts caused by water would just trip the one tank, and not the whole line shutting down all the tanks power.
Would look clean, and professional, and shouldn't take more than a few hours, likely less than 100$, using just a pair of wire cutters, your drill, and your screw driver.

You mentioned it! It is genetics and over breeding. Many lineages contain very sensitive and weak fish. Literally stress from preexisting conditions and/or sudden future changes kills them! 10:25 What is your floor made from? Is it wood, tile, or composite material? If it is tile, or other non-giving material, you should place something under the feet of the stands to avoid pressure points and general rust prevention. Those metal stands may have a burr where they were cut and make a pressure point that would crack/shatter tile or similar material once the massive amount of weigh is put on them.
