I’ve gotten to know Alex since the recording, and he’s genuinely a good dude. It’s easy in our culture to get sucked into student loan debt and endless school because we don’t teach about the consequences. I really think he is going to do what’s necessary and turn this financial situation around.

Finance has to be mandatory in high school. All high school graduate should be shown what return on investment before getting into college. I saw a Phd in social work with 400 k in student loans making 25 k per year. Does that make any sense at all? Neal

I was a first generation college student and the goggles I wore took me from a community college debt free to a 4 year state school. That was all good, but the financial perception was that the lifestyle my student loans/scholarships/grants allowed would be what happens when I finished school. 🤯 Definitely not the case.

Sure, but at the same time it’s basic math. The guy doesn’t even know exactly how much he makes. “$2,100 a month?”, he says, uncertainly. Then he’s not sure if that’s before or after tax. Let’s say he makes $1,700 a month after tax. Now divide that by 4. $425 a week. Now what expenses do you have? Rent, food, insurance, gas, utilities. Start writing them down. What are your monthly expenses? If they’re under $1,700, you’re good. If you’re over $1,700, you’re fucked.

They don't want us to be literate. They want us to be permanent slaves to debt. Medical care, job training, housing. None of these things used to require going into debt. Our current economic system is basically unprecedented, and a person from an earlier era would absolutely define us as indentured slaves.

Highschools and colleges/universities have a business agreement. Thats why they make SATs ACTs, college readiness nonsense, etc a big deal in highschool to make kids feel like they will be a nobody if they dont continue with “higher education”. They will never want students to be aware of these things because then the student loan industry will be effected.

I had a professor in college who sat down with me when I was a senior to talk about my life plans. He was my advisor and knew I had my eye on a PHD in theology and I was going to be an academic. Keep in mind he also had a PHD in theology. He told me he really liked his job, but as the chair of the department he received 5xs the applications than jobs open every year. He strongly encouraged me to take a year off and think about it, and in that year I fell in love with social work. I will never forget him telling me "you can love something a lot, and make a place for that in your life. That doesn't have to mean it's your job." I really wish that more creative kids heard that message. There are so many places where you can exercise your creativity and improve your craft while still having the day job.

The vast majority did it for next to meaningless reasons, were duped by school counselors, or are almost addicted to school because it is a ‘safe’ environment. Not to mention that the value of a graduate education is being diluted by the sheer numbers being enrolled. This gets worse every year. My generation needs to wake the hell up. Struggled with managing my credit and money for a while and just started to put it back together in 2021 and life has gotten so much better! Keep doing great work Caleb!

Honestly being a student is so stressful it's easy to overspend. This channel is the tough love we all need to hear. So much of the time we just justify little purchases and mindless shopping here and there and everyone just jokes about being in debt (as a coping mechanism, btw) so we’re made to feel like it’s just normal and totally manageable. But if you’re not paying attention to your finances and laying it out in front of you, you don’t even realize that you’re NOT managing, just going further and further into credit card debt. Then paying fees and accruing interest, you end up losing even more money and get even DEEPER into debt and it’s not until after a couple years when you’re entirely reliant on credit card to pay for basic needs, THEN you break it down like this and see the hole you’ve gotten yourself into.
This show will hopefully get us to wake up and take hard look at ourselves before that happens and take accountability for our choices. The good news is that it is totally within our control to PREVENT situations like this and, as he shows at the end of every episode, that there is always a way out and it’s never hopeless. It’ll probably be very difficult and take a ton of work and sacrifices, but you CAN get yourself out of any situation. There is always hope, but we need to start paying attention NOW

Cause I guarantee I can slap some meat on wheat and put it in a bag a helluva lot faster than that barrista can take his coffee order.
I understand spending a bit of money when you are really tight on time but when you earn this little AND your future earning prospects are abysmal even in HCOL areas... like bro get a sandwich from 7eleven or a dollar menu item or two at McDonalds at most to cover the those few times you don't have time to poor a bowl of cereal for breakfast and pack a bologna sandwich for lunch.
It is actually infuriating as someone who grew up poor and hate to fight tooth and nail to make it and I thought I was truly atrocious with my money in college but to hear this man speak with no shame about a sheet of expenses that are truly going to drown him and coming up with nonsense excuses. He is posturing plain and simple, he doesn't want his 'friends' knowing he is poor and struggling, the dude is paying over 50 per month just to own the latest iPhone for christ's sake, as a GRAD student no less, he isn't a fresh out of highschool kid anymore.

It may be more common in schools with different room and board systems and grad students who may not have the same access to or desire for on-campus housing, food, etc.

I got a nephew that went to a high school that specialized in aviation careers. After senior year, it essentially is a publicly funded tech school. He became an airline mechanic. He makes over a 100k. He got all of his certifications without spending one penny. Today, unless you’re going to be a lawyer, doctor, or something like that, you’re probably better off not being saddled with debt.

These are so helpful to watch. I don't spend more money than I have. But there are elements of some of these audits that apply to me as well. Especially getting coffee and small unnecessary things that all add up to hundreds a month for something that I honestly value way less than that. Even though I can just get a thermo mug and bring my own coffee for a car ride rather than spend time and money getting coffee on the road. That said, unnecessary spending is one thing, but taking on debt for coffee and sandwiches is crazy. It makes me feel sad that people are jeopardizing their future and getting into trouble for stupid stuff like getting new jeans and coffee.

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. "You're not going to remember those expensive shoes you bought ten years ago, but you will remember every single morning when you look at your bank account that extra 0 in there. I promise, that's going to be way more fun to look at everyday", I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life too 🙏🙏🙏

I avoided college because of the debt it would have put me in, and followed a random opportunity into a trade instead. The pay is not spectacular but it's liveable in my area, and I've only just started braving the world of credit cards the last few years.
My one regret is that I used to never get much junk mail, and now my mailbox fills up with credit card offers lol

I have never heard of trying to overpay taxes myself. You should try to pay exactly what you will owe, and you are better off saving separately in case you do owe. You can get some interest on your money. My emergency fund covers it.

Because sometimes friends are pushy, and it’s going to be really difficult and uncomfortable to never be willing to go out and get drinks or eat for a span of 4+ years. Feed these people some lines to give their friends and some manageable ways to actually cope with living through the extreme lifestyle changes

Best gig for almost any grad student is private tutoring. 10 years ago I was getting $40 an hour to tutor undergrads in math, it really helped me pay for the fun side of living expenses while my stipend paid for the necessities of rent, groceries and utilities.
It's great that this guy is getting a masters paid for, amazing especially since it doesn't sound like he's doing any teaching or research and just taking classes (but a very heavy class schedule?). While the masters will help him be secure in future employment, at $30 an hour it's going to be really hard to work out of this debt in an expensive city like Austin, or mid-cost city like Chicago. Good luck! Set your action plan in motion and reap the rewards of a more secure future!
