Panzerlied (Battle of the Bulge with english intro)

- Boys. Too many boys. The illusion. The hope that there is one more chance. That is the illusion.
The song starts at 1:30. I have left the entire scene to give context for the song.
In the previous scene, Obergefreiter (lance-corporal) Conrad, the loyal aide and chauffeur to Oberst (colonel) Martin Hessler, reluctantly tells his colonel that the war would soon be over:
"The illusion. Maybe I'm not using the right word, colonel. I'm not an educated man. The hope that there is always one more chance. That is the illusion.......this new command is an illusion. Give it up."
The colonel becomes irate:
"I am Martin Hessler. Four years ago, my panzers overran Poland in one week. That was no illusion. In 39 days, my tanks smashed all the way to Paris. That was no illusion. I conquered the Crimea. That was no illusion. Today......I was given a brigade of Tiger tanks. When I have a brigade of tanks......that is reality."
The corporal responds:
"And who will drive your tanks? The men you led were soldiers. Veteran soldiers. Are there any left? What will they give you now? I was by your side in Poland, France, Crimea. Look at me, colonel, I'm not the same man. I jumped in a ditch today at the sight of an unarmed reconnaissance plane. My two boys remember me as a good soldier. They wouldn't believe it. But, colonel, I am not the only one. How sure can you be of the men who will drive your tanks?
The colonel then demands to see his troops. The scene opens with him inspecting his troops. In this scene, you can see the Colonel realizes Conrad was right. "Boys. Too many boys". He realizes all is lost. And presumably, a tank commander realizes this and breaks into the song. Hessler regains his (false) confidence, starts to sing as well, and forces his corporal to start singing to regain his confidence.
Of course, the corporal was right. The war by then was clearly lost.

My grandpa taught me this song in the 80s. He was a radio operator on a tank in the 7th Panzer Division. He was often personally a guard in front of Rommel's tent, also for Dr. Mauss and Papa Hoth - he values them very much. Grandpa - thank you for the wonderful time with you, miss you and the boys of your generation!
My dad used to sing me this song when I was a child. When he was a teenager growing up in Trieste which was part of Adriatisches Küstenland he used to watch the Panzers on their way to Yugoslavia singing Panzerlied. They were so young and attractive in their black uniforms and they looked invincible he would say to me.

Oh my, you're right. I wonder what's up with that. Bad production I guess xD
Only like 3 of them have iron crosses
Bic Wulf They maybe had them from their fathers
Well the west sees them as pure evil because they don’t actually know much about them, how they did things, or their philosophies. Big reason we didn’t learn from them and absorb their strengths, just called it all bad and avoided everything, damn shame to ignore something to clearly powerful.
I only see 2 of them who has it. The dude who started the singing and the dude who's in the middle in the next shot who looks much older than the rest. My guess is they probably are already experienced tank crew men.
As a kid, I first saw this film when I was 7 or 8. Around 1972 I think. The two scenes that stuck with me for all these years, was the ending scene of petrol barrels being rolled towards the tanks, and this one. Both struck fear in my heart. At 59, it’s still there, and it still does.

To be honest they feel better because they don’t have the special effects, there is more of a focus on plot and characters on the older films, I must admit being surprised though when I saw the Germans apparently had developed patton tanks.
I love how half of the extras in this scene were only there because they look the part but they didn't know German and didn't take the time to learn the song. It's like music lesson in high school where only half of the class sings the song and the others are just humming.

A previous German government ‘some decades ago’ said in in internal documents that after world war 2 the east would have a ‘bleeding eastern border’ now like 80 years later
One of the most beautiful scenes from war movies
Fantastic synopsis sir

As a German I must say the Americans can sing a German song PERFECTLY!
Iam impressed :)

You can criticize their cause...but not their commitment.
Being committed to a false cause isn't a good thing.
But committing to what you think is right, is.
James Payne That's subjective. The German soldiers believed that their cause was a good cause. A cause they were willing to die for even when practically everyone in the world wanted them dead. That's patriotism at it's finest and is something that should be respected. Even if you don't like the cause.

My father was on a German tank crew towards the end of the war , and when he saw this scene in the movie many years ago , he laughed and said he and his comrades knew it was hopeless and he just hoped to be captured by the Americans ( which he luckily was ) . He lost one brother in the Kreigsmarine ( U-boat) , and another on the Eastern front . He said the 2 years immediately after the war were tougher than his war years .
OK so you have embraced the idea of the destruction of Germany by the notion of historical guilt. You are wrong. You do not know anything. Take the trouble of encountering an unknown entity; history.
I met a US Army vet in 1991 who fought in Germany during the last days of the war. He had a permanent disability and couldn’t stand up without assistance. He explained that his Jeep was hit with cannon fire as he led a convoy into a small town. Killed the driver and blew him into the air. The Germans who fired upon him were quickly killed by a following halftrack. He said, “they never gave up.”

This is one of my favorite songs
Many years ago, at a wargame convention, the grognards were asked to name the German commander of the Bulge. Most named Hessler, rather than von Manteuffel. Sepp Dietrich commanded the other Panzer Armee.
Germans 100% had the best uniforms..don’t even care 🤣 yes nazis were evil but the way they respected their senior officers and dressed has never been topped not even in this modern age.
Well they were Hugo Boss! (Seriously, look it up)
