Dungeons and Dragons FINALLY got Hard Plastic Minis. D&D Sprues! Wizkids Frameworks Review.

- Dungeons and Dragons minis are getting made in polystyrene now! We've seen resin, bendy plastic, and metal... and now we have hard plastic sprues. :-) This is my favorite material for building, painting, and playing. It looks like these Frameworks minis are gonna be for sale very late 2021 or early 2022. Early samples provided by WizKids for review purposes and as part of free RPG day at Crossroad Games in Standish, Maine.

More people should paint DnD minis... in real life and on here on UA-cam! :-) Question: Who are your favorite UA-camrs who already paint a lot of DnD minis? let's give 'em some love!
28mm or 32mm?
Agree UA-cam need more diversity… For me it’s devs and dice, love that channel
I gotta say i really like the old Ral Partha AD&D Miniatures
@@RPRsChannel anywhere in there :-) It just seems like wargaming gets waaaaayyy more painting love than RPGs do, which is strange since more people play RPGs. I'd love to see some more DnD painting channels get popular!
But ofc, _everything_ is "worth something", so building an Ral Partha AD&D Miniature army off ebay and those prices on these 'teasures' is x10-x20 more expensive than just buying similar proxies.
“You know what’s better than ale?………READING!”
I’m dead. 😄
But that`s debatable though… hahahaha
It's fantasy afterall.sometimes ypu have to suspend your disbelief.
Try selling that line to your Cyberpunk guys too!! Ale is better than reading
BMC I challenge you to fit that line in your next cyberpunk video XD
You know what's better than ale, or reading?
Both, obviously.
"You know what's better than ale? Reading!" Never change, Brent.
Indeed!
I was cutting out my Slambo with snips when he said that, and I'm so glad my chuckle didn't cause me to slip
I'm really glad you've vocalized the lack of content focus on DnD miniature painting. I love mini-painting and I do so exclusively for dungeons and dragons so seeing more mini-painters tackle the same stuff would be very interesting and engaging.
We'll see what we can do :-)
I happen to have a channel where I paint miniatures for RPGs
I really appreciate this video. I would love to see more people on UA-cam paint fantasy type minis instead of just Warhammer. I'm just starting out but I don't want to buy war hammer or other army types of minis.
@@perezjm21 My videos are what you want
I actually got into mini panting because of D&D. I wanted minis to add to our game. Went to Warhammer for the better sculpts. Very excited to see what wizkids comes up with!
I’ve painted a lot of Nolzur’s because I like the designs and price point but those damnable bendy weapons drive me insane. It’s nice to have an alternative.
exactly! more options is always a good thing :-)
Hot water followed by a cold water dunk always does wonders for me, I have even done some minor re-posing that way without any trouble.
My problem is I have to strip them, remove mold lines, flashing ,and gap fill before re-priming and then finally painting it.
Soft plastic mold lines are the absolute worst, takes me 2-3x longer and I never manage to get all of it.
@@Ricksteady8 Thanks for the tip! I’m going to have to give that a shot. But I agree they are a lot of work as a whole.
Maybe I got some old castings, but the last few I've bought have been pretty bad with the mold marks. Then you scrape it off and have to re-prime them. I really prefer Reaper.
@@scottplumer3668 I really like reaper too. They’re scaled a little bigger and are easier for me to paint. However my local hobby store stopped carrying them so I haven’t been able to do them for a while.
I've always treated D&D as a miniature agnostic game using all brands of minis. Nice to see this new line of figures though.
yup yup! DnD is like... THE miniature agnostic game, but it's always good to have more options and also on-ramps for curious new players :-)
Considering 50% of Gary Gygax's miniature collection were raids on his children's toy box, it's a fair treatment.
@@DungeonMiser The bullete, rust monster, shambling mound, and owlbear are all based on knockoff Ultraman kaiju toys sold as "dinosaurs" in the USA.
Lego men! To warrr!
I have legit bought whole board games purely to have their minis to use in D&D. Like Descent 2nd Gen (Journeys in the Dark), I bought a bunch of the expansions and the like for it purely to have cool minis to use in my D&D games.
This was a great watch Brent. I’m in the category of not super into painting minis, but I really love the looks of these and can see myself getting excited to pick some up when my hobby shop gets em in and give em some paint 🎨
It's always nice for another company to advance in what they offer, they do look nice and if any of the monsters are a nice fit for the Frostgrave Beastialry I'll pick it up providing theirs not a Reaper bones black (the stiffer plastic) version that's half the price
Always love to see more variety on the market, especially in hard plastic! :-)
I dig that they're doing models on sprues with all the extra options. Really makes for good value. I also like Nolzur minis and, while I've come across bendy weapons, they're pretty easy to fix with a little heat (though I've totally cut off a few and customized weapons myself). My only real complaint is with the mold lines. Like you stated, they're definitely harder to clean and end up leaving a good amount of unprimed areas that need to get covered.
I often clip off existing weapons and glue spare plastic ones on them. Same with heads.
Yep: mold lines, soft details, and sometimes over-sprayed primer are the primary downsides to the softer plastic. The ability to cut and modify hard plastic is its largest strength. Metal is the GOAT.
Thanks for extolling the love of painting minis for D&D. I started playing and painting in the late 1970s, and now I’ve got my grandson into playing…he’s not into painting….yet :-)
When I used to work at a games store, before the wizkids minis came out, the options for dragonborn/gnomes/tieflings/etc were so limited! It's great how many good D&D minis there are now, and the fact that these have variant options is also great!
Yeah! Always good to see more options, this is a great step in the right direction. :-)
You can fix the bendy swords with a little heat, and after heat treatment they even harden. I just use a regular lighter, put the part I want above the flame for about a second, it gets even softer and I just pull it by the tip in the direction I want it to be, it quickly cools down and hardens into position. it is easier to pull it than to "bend" it into position.
I'll give that a shot!
Or dip the part in boiled water to heat it up then hold in place until it cools
@@benmudge3996 lol this sounds like a much safer way to do it, will definitely give it a try! Thank you!
I've used boiling water a bunch of times - definitely work's on the WizKids line - I managed to completely re-position a Rakdos wing (large model), swords and arms work nicely too. I get them malleable by submerging the part in recently boiled water for maybe 30 - 60 seconds, then, holding the part in the position I want it, dunk it under running cold water at the sink - works a charm.
Bendy stuff on Reaper minis and also on the older pre-painted D&D miniatures also works with heat by dipping into boiling water until you can shape the mini and cool it afterwards under cold water.
I really like that you unbox, assemble and paint the products you review before giving a verdict. Good stuff!
I like everything about these except the price. Personally I find it’s hard enough to get players to pick up minis to begin with, and I think a lot of people will scoff at a price point that starts at $15, especially when 5e can be played with TotM or with digital tabletops.
I do think it’s kind of weird how there’s almost no d&d miniature painting on UA-cam. Especially when you consider how many of the landmark terrain youtubers got their start doing d&d terrain.
I did too scoff at the price. But let me reassure you: there's plenty of content about painting fantasy minis on the Tube. Channels/painters like Miniac, Ninjon, Mindwinter Minis, Sigmars and about ten other gents and ladies are regularly pushing advanced technical and beginner content on lavis, highlighting, non metallic metals or basing. And i'm not even considering what you can lesrn from the military model hobbyists that publish on UA-cam too. Don't wait for the youtube algorithm to recommend you new stuff, do queries !
The price point is insulting. A fair price would be $4-5 USD for a small frame.
@@the_arcanum Oh I watch all of those, but none of them base their content in generic fantasy figures. They all focus on the GW product line and intersperse their videos occasionally with other miniatures.
I mean more along the lines of seeing a miniature painting channel that doesn't paint 80%+ GW figures.
@@mrmaat I think $5 is low, but I'm Canadian, so my $5 probably isn't your $5. I think $10 is pretty reasonable just because of how many options come with the figure.
Thats taking into account that regular Wizkids models already cost around $5 here.
I think it’s a fair price. Marvel Crisis single figures are around that range, and while larger in scale, they also include pricing for licensing and game design, and don’t come with much in the way of customization options. For $15 retail to get a solid figure that will provide options that become bits when not used is a pretty decent price for this market.
Great review of a vendor product. Unbiased and no 'strings' attached by the vendor. This is the way reviews should be. I'm pretty jaded by the reviews of others who are unable to criticize a product good or bad. Good job Brent and in my view your credibility is top notch!
Honestly my view of wizkids went up just in that they didn't attach any strings or put a review embargo or wait until the very last second to send it out. That's the way to do it!
Its me. I've been playing tabletop RPGs for about 17 years and got into mini painting like 6 years ago. Last year I got a 3D resin printer and I have more stuff to paint then I have time to paint it or room to properly store it. I've been trying to upgrade my painting abilities and love your videos. Thank you!
Keep on painting, my friend! :-)
These look great! Thanks for the review Brent, i love your painting style and your voiceover, no one speaks or sounds like you and it's a joy for my ears :)
I've been playing dnd for a little longer then 20 years. I have only recently gotten into painting minis. While a friend had the biggest influence in getting getting to try. Another big reason, was I had intimidated myself out of even trying.
Between cost, and the fact I didn't know anyone who painted to ask for advice or tips, I guess I just felt afraid of wasting my money on something I wasn't going to be happy with.
But I'll tell you, channels like yours have really helped me. Learning techniques and having a place you know you can look for help took a lot of the anxiety away.
And you Brent, as a presenter and host, are great. You speak plainly and your sincerity is apperant. You're informative, and seem to present as many aspects and or views as you can think to include. Thanks for all of the great content.
Its so good to have your content back, highlight of my week.
One thing that often works for bendy weapons is super familiar to anyone who has a large Reaper Bones collections, but immerse in hot (nearly boiling) water for about 20-40 seconds (longer for larger models) then pull out with a utensil of some kind (hot water is hot) bend to the right shape and immerse in ice water.
I'll give it a shot! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Some plastics will return to their "proper" shape just from being heated, some you'll need to hold back into shape until it cools (hence the ice water). I've also heard of a heatgun working better for some plastic but haven't run into any minis that that was required for in my personal experience. If you do have bent minis, try the hot/cold water method and they rebend after a couple of days it might be worth playing around with a heatgun.
Amazing video man! Very much looking forward to these! ...and THE STAGE!
I really enjoy watching you paint. Your figures always look so clean and fun.
can't wait to pick some up ..been looking for them on line.. Thanks for the cool video!
Definitely been excited for these since I first saw em, seeing the preview stuff floating around the web it's only kept me excited.
YES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE!
"You know what's better than Ale? Reading." I spit out my OJ. Great review, thank you for doing this Brent. :)
Hehehe, you do love your stories :-)
I am legit stoked about this!
Ohhh I'm excited for this. Definitely enjoy polystyrene models. Details looks great. I love customizable pieces and extra bits!
Framework Minis do look amazing! But I will personally always love the unpainted Wizkids sentiment. There are indeed often bend parts but it takes less than a minute and very low effort to fix them. Wiggle the bend part in hot, almost boiling water, straighten it and put it in cold or running water - fixed. Learned this quite recently, and it has changed my painting life, so I really wanted to share this tip! Happy painting =)
I like that they give us extra options, the leftover bits are perfect for kitbashes.
I still don't understand how anyone can give the nicest guy on the planet a thumbs down...🤔
This is so rad, I cant wait to get my hands on some of these miniatures!
Very cool Brent! I watched Jon from Miniature Hobbyist open these up last week but you've gone into a lot more detail with what all the frameworks come with. Very cool to think of all the opportunities this can create for DnD minis
Well neat and about time.
Definitely into this and more painting.
Thanks
Thanks for another great video, Brent!
This seems really well thought out. Cannot wait to get my hands on them
i love the end presentation on the online gameboard!
Very interested in the PC mins. Thanks for this video Brent! Great review!
Great models..and awesome paint job!
Wow! I can't wait to get my hand on theses!
I began my painting journey with the old pewter reaper minis for my dnd games back when I was a kid and up until very recently have gotten into some warhammer minis because of channels like yours and miniacs channel
Splendid way to get in to it. Good job sir! Knep The brush wet!
And here I just finished painting my resin warlock from Heroforge! :D These look cool, though, and much better than the current Nolzur's; if they release all the Modrons as Frameworks minis, I'll jump straight in!
I started playing d&d when I was 16. My 1st dm never used minis or terrain. It was just us, dice, paper, and pencils. It's funny that those are the most vivid memories in my gaming life. Love this review Brent! Cannot wait to try my 1st sprue d&d minis!
100% agree Brent. I only print, paint and play D&D - yet the best painting videos are from the Wargame community. More Please!
very stoked about this line of minis coming out
As for D&D heavy content, I'm making videos to get D&D fans and TTRPG people into mini painting and terrain making stuff, and vice versa. I love both!
I just got started painting mini's back in oct 2021 and gotta say i'm addicted
I NEED THESE IN MY LIFE
Long live Dr Faust, painting dnd minis for the last 10 years
Love me some Dr. Faust :-) The green muscles on that orc is a skill I learned from him many years ago!
@@GoobertownHobbies ditto a God of layering that guy 👦
I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel; you've inspired me to pick up mini painting as a hobby, and play D&D with them!
Love this video!
I paint minis exclusively to DnD, I don’t play any tabletop game. I started painting my player characters, then as a DM started painting monsters and NPCs, love the hobby!
I think the main issue is to be a DnD player/painter you are generally painting stuff for outside of DnD (except for the games master). Paints, brushes, practice are all pricy if all you use is one model.
Very good point.
Brent, these look epic. What a great product as a mini painter and DND player!
Great video! I really like how your hag turned out. Cool minies to! Might have to look for them at my LGS
They look awesome! I'm excited to get some.
Customization is something I've always found sorely lacking from the Wizkids line. If these all turn out to be similar quality and price, I'd be happy to pick up a few kits for my players.
tbh if the difference in price is only a few pounds/dollars its still worth it imo for the customisation & not having the headache to deal with the god awful primer they currently use
So these are $15 for 1 customizable mini vs the Nolzurs which is $5 for 2 non-customizable minis.
I've bought 2 3d printers exclusively for D&D minis. Though there is not many painting on UA-cam, there are many patreons that cater to the hobby
Very true! I've had a printer running all week for a DnD game I'm playing in :-)
I entered this hobby as a DND player, and have made lots of cool terrain. I really wanted to get into mini painting, but as was said in the video, most UA-cam mini painters are painting war game minis. I watched tons of warhammer 40k videos and now I know how to play it, even though I haven’t bought any 40k boxes. I’ve recently become a fan of Malifaux, and am excited to start painting some of those, but seeing these DND minis is very exciting for me and I fully intend on picking some up when I find them. Thanks Brent, for another great video!
Beautiful painting
I just got a few of the $15 kits and I love them. I like the idea of a a kit that can let you have a basic idea for a character, and the more you get let's you have spare bits to add to later models. I hope that more companies take this idea and run with it
A great review of a great idea!
These ARE good kits. Thanks, Goober.
This is awesome Brent. As someone who is slowly migrating back to a tabletop game, I need to look for these.
Actually, bein a DM made me dig out my old GW models and now I have new paints and a 3d printer and started printing OPR armies with loads of fun 🙂
niceeeeee I've been working on OPR stuff recently too :-)
Thanks for the info 👍
Lol that little yellow clamp was so adorable to me. It's the perfect mini clamp. Also these look like such an upgrade from the soft plastic D&D minis - can't wait for my local gaming store to get some!
I can't wait!
Great video again! That hag looks awesome btw.
Great review. I'm looking forward to these hitting the market.
The PVC D&D minis are just terrible to paint. They are usually too shallow in details and too great in flashing / miscasts.
I picked a dwarf up today and uhhh, yep. Shoulder armor missing a chunk, flash around the shield, and hard to get at flash edges under the arms and across the hair
Eric, I feel your pain. I bought a sorcerer a few months back, mostly out of curiosity given the price. Terrible is the right word! I couldn't even figure out where to start, mould lines or filling in all the holes. I honestly think I could've done a better job building one myself out of green stuff. With my eyes closed!
The strength of that line is the monster minis and terrain pieces. I am not a fan of the character minis.
Ooooo, this is a exciting! Great video Brent, love to see this.
we live in exciting times :-)
Good to see you back again brother!👍
A typical way to fix bent parts on plastic parts is put the piece in really hot (previously boiled) water, bend it in place, then stuff into ice water to freeze it into position. That should work, I tried this for many different molded models.
BTW the first miniature model figure I painted was a pewter D&D wizard, it was a logical change from working on scale models like airplanes. It was easier to demonstrate my character's position in the group or in melee. The rest of my group got the models and I offered to paint them. All were happy with the resultant "tools" for the game. Monsters got painted up shortly after.
That's awesome! You're a good friend :-)
I’ve been using frostgrave and Oathmark minis for my games. It’s nice because they are all made to be relatively interchangeable with all the limbs and parts making customizing minis really easy.
“You know what’s better than ale? Reading!” should be on merch!
So excited for these
awwww yeahhhh
I love character creation. I really enjoy painting minis for my characters in D&D.
Love getting a sneak peak at this new line of D&D minis. The customization it offers players is super enticing! D&D was how I got into the hobby, created a metal mini on hero forge, first mini I ever painted. That was over three years ago. 🤘Some of my favorite mini painters on UA-cam: The Pickle Jar, Benji’s Hobbies and Elstonation.
You can fix bendy weapons by dipping them in hot water or using a hair dryer, the dipping them in cold water while straightening the part.
Ah, now a whole new generation of players are going to learn the joys of a bitz box
Oh I'll definitely be picking up a couple of these once they're out! 👍
I've painted my minis since 1980, starting with Testors Model paints on lead. I LOVE playing D&D with minis! If I had the voice and time for it, I'd start a channel for both...
Hehehe, I've got a stash of testors myself :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies i still have those First minis I painted. :-)
I still have all my lead minis from the late 80’s and I also only used testors paints and makeup brushes my mom didn’t need. The good ole days, lol
A very cool concept to release RPG characters in plastic with a bunch of options. The only thing that could improve it would be if the weapons were easily magnetized/interchangeable through pegs, to aid you as your character develops.
SUPER excited for some of these! I do print of most my stuff, but more options is always nice.
exactly!
I am very hyped for these D&D models.
I had asked my neighbour to give me a lift to my flgs today and on the way he was telling me stories about how he used to play D&D in his youth. This makes me want to try to find a paladin model to paint for him as a thank you.
Amazing choice of colors xD
Great thing I’ve actually just started playing DnD with my friends, I’ll look out for these! Not only that I’ve been lookin for some minis to paint
Nice! I wish you long fun campaign full of laughs :-)
I actually got into mini painting because of D&D! And now I'm the painter for the whole group lol. It's fun to get to know my friend's characters before I meet them at the table. Our DM certainly doesn't mind having a live-in painter/terrain crafter either. Great review! I was really curious about these when they got announced and I'm happy that they seem worth the money. I love hags so I'm deffo gonna pick her up when she hits my LGS.
Nice! You're a good friend to paint all those minis :-)
Your nighthag look superb! Fantastic job as always Brent!
Hey thanks! :-)
I started figure painting on D&D miniatures back in 1988 and progressed to figures for numerous other RPG's including HeroQuest and all of it's quest packs and in 10 years I had roughly amassed around 10,000 miniature figures from PC's to large dragons
I see that OTCS! Who needs theater of the mind when you can just have theater?
Can't wait to see what you're planning for good ol Drizzt there!
I just started on a mini for a new DnD character, but gosh those look cool, I will still check them out. As any dnd player knows, you can't have enough character ideas (and minis)
Just wanna say that having a mug of ale while reading is the best combination. Everyone should try it!
I can't love this enough. I'm happy to finally see d&d do this! Plus the mass conversion between all the world's because of material... huh.... yeah.........
Brent, those are really great minis. I'm looking forward to their release. As usual you make them look specially great. You are correct that there are many terrain crafting vids compared to painting vids, which is why your vids are extra spacial. Keep up the good work
Awww, thanks! :-)
Those look fantastic
I think these look amazing! I think the price point is perfect for a 'character' mini, and I really like the customization options.
