What a blast from the past, heading for Munich in December so thought I would watch your old German videos. You have changed both in look and quality of filming/editing. Both for the better, cheers Malcolm.

I have lived in Munich longer than most Germans. I got sent here by the U.S. Army as an 18-year old soldier in January 1968 and more or less stayed on ever since.
The only thing I have not found in Munich is real homesickness.
After Perlacher Forest, Schwabing, Bogenhausen and Glockenbachviertel, I now live in Munich's WestEnd.......the best end of the city.
I am a Roadie / Filmer ...and for $$$ a broadcast planner at a german tv station.
i bin in Minga weil i Bier, Brezn und Dirndl mog..

My ancestors where from Rhineland area near Frankfurt. They moved to US but one moved to England via the ships. But this was around early 1800s.
Cannot wait to trace back my family here but first stop Munich then the train to Hochfilzen and maybe a train to Frankfurt later.

Your videos about Germany just make me extremely proud of my country, although I live far outside at the border to France... Your vids are amazing and I think, they are pretty helpful for anyone who doesn't know anything about German culture, because they might get lost or frustrated here :)

I was born in Munich and grew up there for the first sixteen years of my life. Now I'm 25 and I have lived in various places, such as Caracas/Venezuela, Barcelona/Spain, Maastricht/Netherlands and another town in northern Germany, and while each place was wonderful in its own way, my heart will always belong to Munich. It is truly a beautiful and comfortable city to live in, that inspires you the same amount it lets you rest, contrary to other big cities in Germany, in my opinion. It's very interesting to view this city from a tourist's POV. Some people pointed out that we Bavarians like to think of ourselves as Bavarians before thinking of us as Germans, and I have to say that it has a lot to do with how other parts of Germany view Bavaria. We're often referred to by Germans as 'the country south to Germany', a bit as a joke, but also a bit serious. Many Germans have an (un)conscious dislike towards us. Why? I have no clue. Maybe because the economy is flourishing and Bavaria is the richest state in Germany. Ah, but anyway, I am rambling, this was an interesting video :)

I am German & have been living in Munich all of my life. You are absolutely right about most things you mentioned - but there is one thing that you are very wrong about: You hardly find any Bavarians living in Munich. Most of the come from other parts of Germany and from abroad. And Munich people are NOT nice ! Most of them are really arrogant. Maybe not so much when you are a tourist - they are trying to behave around foreigners. ;) If you want to meet nice people in Germany - go to Berlin and East Germany!

Absolutely one of my favorite places I have been. I went with a class and it was the last city on the trip, honestly, I didn't find it expensive compared to Paris where we were earlier in the week. Something that wasn't mentioned was the churches-they are absolutely beautiful as well and worth admiring the beauty, even if not religious. The food was delicious and the people were not only nice but gorgeous. Seriously, some of the most incredible women I have ever seen and met were Munchen girls.

from what i remember in munich last summer when i went to pick up my BMW at the Welt in munich, all the people speak english very well. especially the older people speak english well. i stopped asking people "do you speak english" after the third day because it was pointless. munich is so fucking awesome, im going back every year.

thank you for pointing this out. In my experience nearly EVERY German speaks English. EVERYBODY has to learn it at school. Of course there are some people who will never get what they are told at school but everybody who looks at least a tiny bit educated and civilized is fluent in English.

I made this at Christmas time. Late October there won't be any snow in Munich (or at least should not be). It might be a little chilly so bring jeans, a jacket. Just check the weather on the internet before you head out and you will be fine. I remember last time I was in Munich in October I had jeans and a sweatshirt and a fall jacket. But if you are going to go up into the mountains then it may be a bit chillier. Have a great trip! I am very jealous!

Have been visiting Munich since about 1984, & my wife & I love the city! It used to be our "start point" for skiing in Austria, but 3 back surgeries have ended skiing. But - every time we visit, we always find something new (to us). NO NEED for a car; U-Bahn & S-Bahn much better than driving, especially using a "Partner Pass."

I loved the Viktualienmarkt when I was there. I went during Oktoberfest and it was really crowded, and the hostels are very expensive too. I think I paid literally 50€ for a night to only share with 7 other people. I heard that people camp out during Oktoberfest too, but you will have to take the S-Bahn somewhere outside of the festival. It was definitely an experience. Since I'm not so much of a beer person, I opted to spend money eating Barvarian food which was nice and went to a couple coffee shops which were very nice too. He's right. Most of the people in Munich are nice. The only mean person I encountered was an older lady serving food at one of the grocery stores who didn't understand English. She actually reminded me of another German lady in Seattle who was helping out with her sons' German restaurant. She was so bitter about Germany saying that it has turned into a ' veeel zheeeeet-hole' lol. She was talking about Berlin in particular, but Munich is very nice.

The people in Munich were amazing when I was there, and were so helpful. I hardly knew any German, but they helped, even the older people. It helps to be polite. Some Americans were obnoxious and spoke too fast. The cultural sights in Munich are great. The science museum is a must. The transportation is amazing. I went everywhere without a car. Hotels were not overly expensive either. This list sounds like something I would tell anyone thinking about visiting Munich. The beer halls were good, but I was there for Oktoberfest and don't know what it's like any other time of the year.

Honestly though, telling people to go back to anywhere is idiotic. Tourists come when they can and you should be happy they come, regardless if they are Americans or Australians or Austrians, heck even people from countries that don't start with the letter A should be very warmly welcomed as tourist money means jobs. Go to school and learn a little econ before you banish a whole country from visiting. Silly boy. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am in the process of planning my trip for the summer of 2015 and am not finding the prices very expensive. Of course the Euro-dollar exchange rate is about 1-1 now certainly helps. Three star hotels and apartelles for around $100 (booked the 5-Star Ritz in Berlin for $165) and high-speed ICE trips from Frankfurt to Munich First Class for under 100 bucks is downright cheap in my book. Day local transit passes for $ 7 again is a bargain. This is all the same or cheaper than in the U.S.

I wouldn't say that Munich is all that expensive. We've encountered much more expensive food in Denmark and Norway. We were in Munich in Aug. 2011 and, compared to Ottawa and with the euro at 1.47 Cdn back then, the cost of restaurant / beer hall food was not much more than what we would have paid in our home town for similar items.

+Steve M. Indeed that in Scandinavia is more expensive, but München is one of the most expensive cities in Germany- thats not only for tourits but also for living for GErmans :)
      Greetings from Frankfurt

+Daniela S Compared to our home town (Ottawa, Canada), Munich in 2011 was not so expensive from a Canadian tourist's perspective. We pay almost as much for restaurant food in Ottawa. In Munich, we had a reasonably priced and very good lunch (poached salmon and salad, plus a non-alcoholic beverage) at the Einstein restaurant next to the Jewish museum for under 30 euros for two, incl. tip - and roughly $106 Cdn for a dinner at another restaurant in Haidhausen (and we would have paid over $90, including tip for the same things at a German restaurant in Ottawa). Hotels are expensive in Munich, but we have run into much higher priced places elsewhere in Europe. Within Germany, the next year we found restaurants and hotels in Berlin to be more expensive, but that came as no surprise to us. (In 2012, the euro was around $1.27 Cdn, so price-wise Berlin wasn't so bad back then. Today, it would be much more expensive for Canadians, because our dollar is now much weaker against the euro (around $1.54 Cdn).

Bavarians and Germans in general get a rather bad rap for racism and extremism. I found the germans to be more open minded about different races than many other quote unquote multicultural countries (i wont name them as that would mean hate mail for a month), but you should be fine. i have traveled throughout germany with friends from turkey, portugal, italy, the US, Ghana, China and many other places and neverhad any problems with race issues.

Bavaria is their region. People from Munich are Germans but they like to think of themselves as bavarians first. Think of the state of Texas in the US. Texans think of themselves as from Texas first then from the US.

My teacher explained that the south of Germany tends to be more expensive because it's where their industries are located so tourism is not a very important branch of their economy there, however, the north depends a lot on visitors - it tends to be cheaper.

Wonderful city and I don't agree its expensive to eat there, they have wonderful reasonably priced food even in the department stores and its not expensive plus excellent size portions. If you have a piece of cheese cake its not those thin slices you get elsewhere but a really great big slice. Also visit the BMW museum fabulous place to spend a few hours.

@woltersworld Oh, that´s sad... I think it would be great if you do a video about Turin, it will surprise you because the city itself, has a lot of things to offer. I have never been there but i´ve heard great things.
I´m planning to study college there the next year but i don´t know the city so it would please me a lot that video!!
If I had some mistakes in my English, pardon me I´m Portuguese and studying senior year in High School.
    Good Bye!!
