Very nice explanation and great video! As you mentioned at the end of the video, I would love to see part 2 go through some contrasting real-world examples of when you would want to use window functions.
That's the class I needed! You read my mind! PS: if you hold click and move the cursor of the mouse along the cells, you can select a range of cells (it is hard to explain this in words, but I tried, rsrs)
Hey Tim, many thanks for the great videos you make, really helpfull. Looking forward to the part 2, it would be really great if you can explain in it more details on Compute using when we edit the tableau calculation. cheers!
For Part 2, I'd love to see how to user the Window function to create a bar chart that shows sales per month for a selected year but has a reference line which shows the average sales per month across multiple years. This would allow the user to see, for example, how sales for January 2022 compares to average sales for January from 2017 to 2022.
Great video! You saved me hours trying to figure this out. Unrelated question -- what tool are you using to annotate your screen with boxes, arrows, etc. while recording?
Your channel has been incredibly helpful to me thus far. Thank you! I was hoping you also could share what annotation tool you use for marking up your videos. Seems much better than the free gink annotator I have started to use.
Sure have the links in other videos should really add them to all videos. Apologies. My Screen Annotation Tool: j.mp/3HWc4Mj My technology Channel: j.mp/3F0d28f My recording gear & what's on my desk. kit.co/TableauTim/desk-setup My website: www.tableautim.com/
I gave several. There’s also so many blogs and videos out there. My main focus on the channel is to help everyone go from zero and then in the future maybe in a years time once I’ve covered the functions.
No windows would have to copy Mac OS and not sure that’s happening anytime soon. It’s not a Tableau thing that can be implemented by them. Macs have this feature enabled for all software.
Hi Tim - what is the software/tool that you use for highlighting things with color and arrows while you present on your screen? I'm going to explain Table Calcs to users next week, and that would be super handy ! Your videos are awesome. Thanks :)
Hello, First of all this is such an amazing video. Crisp and to the point. Just wanted to know is part 2 of What is the Window function in Tableau? Part1 Tableau Functions available ?
Not yet. I usually leave things to develop a little more see what comments people share or want to know more about and then plan part 2 but its due soon probably Early march. have a couple of other videos I want to do as well. Have a long list to get through after the break and a quiet finish to last year.
@@TableauTim Awesome. The Part 1 really helped me out understanding the base idea of window function. I am trying to explore more of this with a chart. Part 2 will help me out with all such questions that currently I am not able to frame.
I am preparing for the Data Analyst cert. and I can anticipate them just showing me a formula and asking for the expected value. It is one thing if you have the tool open and can play around, but another when you have to calc this in your head. OK maybe if the examples are as simple as shown here, but I suspect the worst of the Tableau test writers. Do you have any guidance regarding the level of familiarity one needs with WINDOW to sit this exam? I suppose that advocates of Tableau would champion this as being flexible, but to me this is not user friendly and is confusing. That said, your explanation is solid - thank you TT.
No the exam isn’t hardcore like that. You just really need context of what the calculation does. The answers will have obvious correct and wrong ones so if you get how the function works usually that’s enough to decipher the answer. Also knowing what’s wrong matters just as much.
This is the best explanation of Tableau's Window Function that I have ever seen!!!
Thanks for all your efforts!!! 💯👍
You are welcome!
Absolutely amazing presentation and explanation. Can't wait to spend the next two months trying to cram this tool into every project I get assigned!
Awesome explanation of window function in tableau.

Great job. So glad you went to this function. I feel like this can be a 3 part vid lol.
Yeah i think it is ahah.
Awesome, I like your way of teaching... i went through lots of blogs but didn't get the concept. Thank you!!
hi Tim, Great tutorial. Thank you for illustrating the techniques in managing window calculation which re excellent.
Awesome Tim , Clear cut Explanation ..
I am hoping you do a complete tableau software in one lengthy video ..
thank you TIM .Love from INDIA

A quick table calculation could do this with some modifications this sounds like a year to date or year on year on average of years

awesome video Tim.. watever videos u r uploading is unique.. One small advice.. try to reduce the length of video..

Hi Tim: This was excellent. Like others, I'm eagerly awaiting Part 2. Any update on when it might be out?
Nice one!! Please add some use cases too in the next video

Thanks stud. This helped a lot!
Great Video. Any idea if Windows now has the Help Seach feature you used at 5:42? Would be really nice to have.
No windows would have to copy Mac OS and not sure that’s happening anytime soon. It’s not a Tableau thing that can be implemented by them. Macs have this feature enabled for all software.
Just a request Part 2 Please .

Hi,Tim Window functions are similar to over() in oracle, suppose if we want to perform partition by how can we do it in tableau .
The partitions are controlled by dimensions in tableau and the table calculation directions.
Great explanation. Is it possible to see what calculation tableau uses when you reference their summary option under the worksheet menu ?
It’s just a basic calculator so it only sums averages mins and maxes whatever you select. That’s all it does
Hi, How can I resolve this forecast error (Time series is too short), thank you.
Add more time to the axis range. If you search extend axis on my channel you can see a video on this topic.
Can you please explain about Window_percentile function?

I’ve done a video about the exam along with many others who go into detail about the type of questions you get.

THANK U
thanks!

Not done yet. I'm human, dad and just like you i get busy too. When i get time I'll get on the case :D
@@TableauTim HAHA sure man no problem.
