after just having returned from Greece, your video is very informative. The best thing i learnt in Greece, is 2 things. 1. Its ok to stop on a roundabout to get a coffee, as long as you leave your hazard lights on and 2. The speed limit is 30kms over the posted limit, even if its 130kms on the freeways, if you do 130, you get tooted and lights flashed at you.
In the last two years I have driven quite a bit in Crete. Once you are used to it, all is good. I’m pretty sure I have been on the roads in your video. The roads through the mountains, with all of the turns, are great fun to drive, constantly changing gears. But I would agree with your tips. The shoulders of the main roads are treated as lanes, and stop signs are just suggestions. You do have to drive forcefully or you will never get anywhere. Most important of all, is to remain alert at all times, and keep your head on a swivel. I do get the impression that Europeans are generally more skilled behind the wheel than us in North America, simply because they are driving on tight winding roads and do so with manual transmissions. But they are aggressive. But as I said earlier, once you get used to it, all is good. Oh, in addition, do not stay in the passing lane like many of us do in North America. People will get really angry with you. And learn how to use your signals in a roundabout.
Yeah, drive cautiously aggressive. I think how aggressive they are depends on which country in Europe you are in. I haven't found them too aggressive in England, Sweden or Germany, but the Mediterranean countries it is very true.
@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 You will be welcome! This year we will also be staying in Portugal, at the usual place in Armação de Pêra in the Algarve. A hug
Hi! I'm a researcher from BBC Studios. We're interested in using some of your great video in a popular UK TV show. If this sounds of interest, it would be great to discuss further via email. Many Thanks Danica
Some good advice....don't hire a small underpowered car if you're planning to cross the island tru the mountains because you'll be gear shifting constantly.... I'm telling you out of experience 😁 this year I'll hire a more powerful car with automatic gearbox, my car is a stick shift but on holiday I'll be hiring a automatic from now on .. question of enjoying the scenery more instead of concentrating on keeping the right gear al the time 😂
Good advice. I usually like to get an automatic myself. You definitely want to think about the scenery more than you want to think about shifting. Are you from Crete, or have you visited there regularly?
@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 I'm from Belgium 🇧🇪 but in August I'm going back on holiday to crete for the third time, again for a twelve days holiday and I'll be renting a car for 4 or 5 days during that time
That's awesome. We're from Arizona in the United States. We spent a week in Crete last year and had an amazing time. I may be visiting Belgium in June, just for a couple of days. If you had four days in Belgium where would you go?
@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 well Brussels, Antwerp or Bruges, Bruges is a very old city ....it's a favorite for a lot of international tourists just Google it you won't be disappointed from a visit to Bruges and it's about 10 miles from were I'm at ... i live at the belgian coast ostend, you'll probably stay in Brussels as it's the capital and that's were the national airport is but Belgium has a pretty good train connection, Brussels-Bruges takes about one hour and if you visit the coast i can recommend ostend it's the largest coastal city in Belgium but to American standards it's pretty small 😁 and don't worry about the language, in Belgium most of us speak and understand pretty good English
@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 it's a dream of mine coming to the states... a dream yet to be released 😊 ....would like to see las vegas and LA in my lifetime
I'm européen truck driver and trust me it's no fun driving a truck in the center of Brussels or Antwerp , I'd prefer unloading 5 places in center of paris rather than one unload in center Brussels.....and to think I'm from Belgium 🇧🇪 so Brussels is our capital city
Once you learn that the rules are only suggestions on Crete, then you follow what the other drivers do and you're good. Just don't drive like them, that seems dangerous....haha!
The only road rules about driving in Greece on the mainland are, there are no road rules. I found driving in Crete very civilized compared to mainland Greece. Maybe it could be they haven't evolved from riding donkeys every where in mainland Greece.
No ethics on Crete roads. If you are waiting to make a right turn, they will go around you on the left and turn ahead of you. Stop signs are "stoptional". Every pedestrian, motor scooter and parked car will bolt into the street in front of your car like you aren't even there. Not to mention the goats. I had to hit the sh*thooks for one as I came around a hairpin turn. Head on a swivel at ALL times! 😂
Agreed Mike. My video doesn't even come close to displaying some of the worst I saw there. I will see this, the people are really nice and the food is great, views are amazing, just watch out for the drivers!

They definitely have their own way of doing things. Beautiful place, driving can be an adventure.
After driving in Sicily, this looks very peaceful. Looking forward to our trip this summer.
I haven't driven in Sicily yet, sounds interesting. Crete is a lot of fun to visit and has a lot of beautiful locations to have an adventure in.
Looking forward this ride next. Loved the Cretan roads seen from the USA perspective, thanks.
More to come! Driving in different places can be a real adventure! Where are you located?

It is really pretty there. Loved the twisting and winding roads there. I never felt unsafe on them.
We've also had this experience traveling around Crete and all the advice you've given are the best advice.🙂
Good video!👍21

You're a brave soul! Glad I could help 😄
We have been driving on Crete for years, keep driving on the right as much as possible and they will do the rest. but stay careful😊
What area in Crete was the tunnel you drove through?
It was in western Crete, driving between Elafonisi Beach and Chania
@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 Great. Thank you. I will be there in December.

Gotta love a girl who 'day drinks.' 🤣🍸🍹🍷
That cliff on her side of the car was reason enough...haha!
