That's fairly incredible, thank you so much for sharing this! I've always been a big fan of living off-grid, and while this is definitely not enough power to run anything large (at this scale), I'd be willing to bet you could extract some serious power over time with a large model. I'd love to see the voltage used to charge a larger high voltage capacitor (or maybe stepped down to charge a small battery)! Keep inspiring, man!

Another sort of related static generator in the video Armstrong's Electrostatic Boiler kind of reminded me of the Kelvin water dropper using partially condensed steam to create a charge or water droplets being swept out by escaping steam. In reading about the Armstrong Effect on Wikipedia, he also used compressed air producing a similar effect. The steam version produced 22 inch sparks and interestingly had glass legs that were 3.5 inches diameter and 3 feet high.

    • @PlasmaChannel
      @PlasmaChannel  3 роки тому +2

The most often mistakes people make on super low power sources like this, is not taking into account sharp edges. You'll notice every single electronic component in my build is smooth, with no sharp edges. Sharp edges leak away high voltage charge really quickly. That's not an issue if you're dealing with high power levels. But these generators create a fraction of a single watt of power. Sharp edges may be your killer.

Nice episode. You can eliminate the chance factor with the triboelectric effect. Just put a plastic ring/collar inside the top right and bottom left to strip electrons off the water on that side.
I've seen this done with two pairs of rings, so that the water passing through the second one neutralizes before going into a container. This is the first time I've seen the containers used as capacitor for the discharge. That might be slowing your charge collection, but it's an interesting effect.

    2) How much can you increase the power of your smaller scale model?
    3) Can you combine the power of more than one of the small ones, and generate more power?
    4) Can you reach 10kv, without increasing the size of your model?
    5) Can you store that energy in a battery for later use?

The problem with your theory of operation is that whilst, at any given instance, one stream may have more (say) +ve ions than the other stream, over a short period of time the number of +ve and -ve ions in either stream will balance out, unless there's some mechanism that drives ions of a particular charge to one specific stream.
The operation reminds me of the Wimshurst machine, and I suspect it's more closely related to the operation of that than to what you suggested.

Actually, the slowest laminar flow would be optimal. I love the idea of combining all your ideas together, cant wait to see the the updates.

When it comes to coffee if I'm drinking it for the energy I'll go black and if I'm drinking it for enjoyment I'll add just a little bit of sugar and sometimes creamer or 'creamer'. The type and brand of coffee is also important, I've never been a fan of Maxwell House coffee (others seem to love it). I have always liked Folgers for a cheaper coffee and Starbucks actually does make some good higher end coffee (I know there's probably better high end coffees out there but I'm usually cheap and when I do want something higher end Starbucks is the easiest option).

Imagine beefing up that spark by collecting the charge in a capacitor, and feed the capacitor output in series with the spark gap and primary winding of a Tesla coil... you see where I'm going with this right? Water / coffee powered Tesla coil! Though the sparks would be intermittent, every several seconds you should get some very brief streamers out of the secondary topload. If that works, perhaps use the output of the Tesla coil to further ionize the water tray that is the source of your Kelvin generator.... more power!

If the device is improved upon to create a more efficient capacitor parallel to the two cups, you get an amount of stored energy in joules (watt * second) that is equal to 1/2*C*V^2. Perhaps when using a switched capacitor principle a momentary charging is taking place and only a partial voltage of the total voltage is stored. That might be an idea todo energy harvesting. And prevents the high voltage breakdown voltage between the cups. It takes some time and some fancy electronics but i think that in the end you can charge a battery with it and power electronics. Pure clean energy from potential gravitation energy. This is a great idea for students. You can use rainwater for it. Use a filter to remove large particles to prevent clogging of the waterdroplet tips and use tubing that has a titanium dioxide coating that will react to sunlight(UV) to kill algea and bacteria and keep the device clean. Those tubes will then supply the filtered and cleaned water to the storage tank on top. Just an idea. 😊 The switched capacitor technique will be the challenge to be overcome. If you ever get it to work, you can put this in all gardens and houses (many in parallel to increase the amount of power) and have clean energy everywhere where there is a lot of rain. It will not replace real power stations. But it will help a lot.

That Philipp Ogris water dropper you commented on sure shines for length of spark and at one point in a gentle rain and thunder no less, in a beautiful mountainous setting. It might be fun to try and double that. If you have seen Bill Beaty's Kelvin water dropper thoughts, he has an inline version and other hints.
About 10 years ago I made a clip of a 13 inch spark using a piece of pvc rubbed with a paper towel sleeved over the tubing. It was good practice on how to keep the charges you make from leaking away. Thinking about a water dropper, it seems there's room for many fun variations and methods one could try to improve upon. And too, there're corporations like Accio Energy attempting to harvest energy from the wind using the principle.
Anyway, if i had a few more parts and motivation, I'd like to make something with clean lines and fancy like yours, with new variations.

My understanding is, he pulsed the plates with high voltage at a resonant frequency that caused the water to split into H2 and O2.
However, I've been taught that it takes more energy to split the water, than you get back during recombination of the 2 molecules.

Hey Jay! I am amazed and I never thought of water carrying charges. I am still a little puzzled for some reason how the waters charges are extracted from the Hydrogen and 2 parts Oxygen and the mineral contaminants. How does it do this exactly? How does the charges get extracted from the Hydrogen and 2 parts Oxygen and Mineral contaminants? Or are you using distilled water? This is quite fascinating to me and I am puzzled a little bit. Where do the charges gather and where do the charges get stripped from? I think a video going in depth on this topic is definitely needed. This is pretty cool stuff. I am interested in seeing a video on what the limits are on this kind of high voltage power supply. I am also interested in seeing a video that uses all of these water methods in creating a circuit. One that could be used very nicely. I am also interested in seeing what this is capable of as far as what the maximum voltage level is for this kind of thing if it indeed has a limit.
I liked the clips showing what how you acted right when it finally works. It shows just how much people like you and me put into experiments and projects and what a relief we feel when we finally figure it out. I loved the additional clip about the plexiglass and how long it takes for these take to cure and weld together. This is quite the video and I loved the new transition scenes you used with the oceans and the backgrounds. This was a great step and I like it. Keep up the great work Jay, and keep it classy and sparky :)
    - Mr. Smith
    Stay classy :)
I'll see you in the next video. And I hope to see a video on these being tested to their boundaries and to see if a better laminar flow and a higher fall distance effects the voltage or current generated. It would also be interesting to see what current is being delivered from the charges building up. It would be interesting to see if one were to happen to be shocked by this, would it be a shock like one from a whimshurst machine, or if it would be like a shock from a moderate standard tazer.

Aside from those garden hose shower nozzles with literally hundreds of tiny holes which are very much like espresso coffee cup filters, it occurred to me those leftover rapid fill multiple water balloon toys that are a cluster of tiny straws might be another way worth trying to increase spark length. One of the ones I have has 37 long thin straws that thread/adapt to a garden hose. Another brand has the straws arranged in a gradually increasing spiral pattern. To space out the straws I saw a 5 inch steel shower drain screen with an array of tiny holes the straws fit into. I bought some very thin teflon tubing that sleeves inside the straws which increases the velocity of the spray.
There's a video of small diameter teflon tubing with water and nitrogen gas pumped through it to form bubbles that create a visible spark. It was a clip on electrostatic discharge safety. You can also make sparks by pumping steam through teflon tubing. And a teflon tipped syringe is used to impart a charge on water whereby an astronaut shows how these formed water drops will orbit some polyethylene and teflon knitting needles in the weightlessness of space.

If you haven't seen it you can watch the UA-cam video "Science off the Sphere: Knitting needle experiment" that experiment in space and hear it in a Texas accent. ha
It's kind of interesting. I used to live in the Pacific Northwest and it's be funny to try a Kelvin water dropper arrangement on a small divided waterfall just to be different, if you could get it to work with some metal hoops and whatnot.

Here's another kind of static generator involving flow through a tube I learned firsthand, maybe of interest.
I was discharging an old fire extinguisher bought at a flea market, one with a long horn at the end of a rubber hose with rusted wire mesh reinforcement underneath the rubber, discovered when cutting the tubing off, just wanting the tank for another experiment. I got zapped a few times and decided to put a cloth over the handle in order to continue emptying it. It only took a few good shocks to decide to this wasn't going to work. I later put the tank on the ground as well as more cloth over the handle when discharging it.
There was the typical white cloud of vapor and white snowy flakes that formed, along with several more distinct discharges of static that could be heard in the cone, like shorting a capacitor. In reading about CO2 static from fire extinguishers ...
"Anyone that is trained to use CO2 should also be trained in the hazard associated with static discharge. Large wheeled units have knocked down operators when the hose bonding wire had been damaged."
"CO2 fire extinguisher discharge hoses are manufactured with a braided continuous wire inside. If the wire in the hose is damaged, the buildup of static electricity can't be dissipated and the operator may experience a shock. This is particularly true if the fire extinguisher is being discharged while being carried up off the ground. That is why NFPA 10 requires that a continuity test be performed on the hose at the time of maintenance ..."

Did you measure the potential between the two handles of the cups? Was there any thought to add any type of recirculation of the collection vessels to refill the 'battery' at the top of the stand? Although, if there was a cycle, it may be possible that this would negate the differential between the two charged areas and thus negate the power generation.

Jake, great thoughts. So, the energy out is actually far less than the energy placed into the system with gravitational potential energy. If you used the high voltage out to feed water back to the top, you'd likely see less than 1% return.

I seen a high school girl do it years ago, she was using a 2 speed water pump and when the pump is on high it creates a spark faster. My landlord told me my contraption had to go. So it all got taken apart.

Nifty AF ! & as always. Though IMO the absolute simplest/DIY HI voltage apparatus is friction gizmo consisting of a piece of fur rubbing a spinning pvc pipe near a tinfoil comb on a copper pipe plus a Leyden jar type cap. 6+ in sparks are possible with a well designed one. Just Say'n, perhaps even Supa Saiyan. 😅

What are the effects of heating vs cooling the base water? Could you reverse the flow of the water as steam and produce a similar reaction or is it going to be too dense to produce Ionic pressure when making power?

I made one 25 years ago. Used plumbing parts and baked bean tins. Why in the shot shown that the spark could not be seen as the water deflected back? The cup handles where not fully shown. Edit and replace.

It was hard to see the spark when so much light was on the water. For the video, I needed tons of light to show the water / coffee streams on camera. But, that meant you could not see the sparks due to the bright light.

I wonder if the spark gap could be passed thru a high voltage transformer stepping the spark down and giving a low voltage high current spike that could be run thru a rectifier and provide a decent output...and if the spark rate could be increased to say 60~hz if it could use those pulsating dc spike to actually create a power source...stepped down of course

Has something to do with how lightning is generated in the clouds made of water during a thunderstorm. You made a small, scale model of a mini thunderstorm.
