CRAZY Cliff Side Hike to the Highest Peak in Madeira | Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo | Portugal

  • Madeira, Portugal has some of the most amazing mountains and cliff sides we have ever seen. We hiked from the 2nd highest peak, Pico do Arieiro, to the highest peak, Pico Ruivo. With 1000m of vertical gain and sheer drops around every corner, this hike is not for those with weak knees. Just when we thought this hike couldn't get any better, we were met with an incredible surprise 500m from the peak. This hike is, and will remain, one of the top three hikes we will ever complete.

    Did this hike 2 weeks ago with my 20-something kids and son's girlfriend. I'm 58, and did the hike one day after recovering from norovirus !! So now I'm feeling like a bit of a hero 😅 !!

    Also I’ve been here since you had a few hundred subscribers and have loved watching this channel grow. You guys are the most down to earth unpretentious travel channel out there.

      It was my first day trying to style it and I was getting so frustrated! Thank you for saying that.
      We have no way of knowing who has been around and for how long. It makes us so happy to know you have stuck around through all the changes our travels and channel have taken. It means a lot and we truly appreciate it. It's not always easy to be ourselves when we try so hard to grow our channel and gain followers. These gentle reminders are exactly what we like to hear and I hope you will be the first to let us know if we start slipping. ;)

    You guys didn't seem to have taken into account a very important factor before that adventure: oxygen levels at that altitude. Nothing, except proper training, can prepare you for that and once you reach a certain height you have to slow down a bit or it will take a toll on you. Been there, done that: 1988, I was in my 20's, in the military service, extremely fit, thought I could handle anything and when I got back to the starting point I was almost like Nathan. This was on a Saturday morning and the next Monday I was still having difficulty walking or climbing stairs. : )

      @SOSASATSUNRISE  Рік тому +1

      Take a peak at our old videos. We are no strangers to high altitude 😀. But we are not in the shape we were a year or two ago and this mountain definitely kicked our butts! Felt that one for a couple days.

    Loved the video with some realistic views and passages. Unlike most videos that only show the pretty bits. I'll be doing this in May this year but I decided for an unguided tour. They drop you at the start and pick you up at the other end. So you don't have to hike back through the same path :)

    Hey what a lovely lovely film, completely filled me with utter joy! My partner and I got back from two weeks in Madeira yesterday afternoon… we had to give this one a pass as I had a muscle issue so next time for us… But the island is littered with so many beautiful walks whether it’s down 600 m cliffs to the sea trekking Lavada’s….or peaking other tops…. It’s a wonderful place.

      @@SOSASATSUNRISE thank you for your reply it is a lovely place.. we did the entire west of The Island from Ecumeadra... we will go back and do the other side when I have sorted this little problem... I was aware of a shorter route but despite being 65 next week I'm not ready to take the stairlift hahaha! There is a lot of mountaineering left in me... love and blessings to you both for such a lovely way on camera.

    World's most expensive hiking trail! Amazing beauty. How do you find these places?

    • @SOSASATSUNRISE
      @SOSASATSUNRISE  2 роки тому +3

      We spend a lot of time researching. Even when we arent looking, we find hikes and locations through instagram and random things we see through out the day. This hike I found on Tik Tok months ago but I never thought we would ever get to this remote island. A month later I found the flight vouchers for TAP Portugal and knew we would be heading to Madeira. Sometimes things just work out in your favor 😀. Is this the world's most expensive hiking trail!? It is beautifully maintained, complete with coffee shop at the top.

    • @Palancar
      @Palancar Рік тому +1

      @@anna3046 Expensive in its construction costs is what I meant. Never seen a hiking trail with so many tunnels. Must have cost a fortune.

    • @anna3046
      @anna3046 Рік тому +2

      Yes, you do have a valid point, when Madeira was discovered, they build an irrigation system around the island and tunnels to get to various points and yes, many people lost their lives building it. It wasn’t one project, they are still improving and building more tunnels around the island. It was very expensive indeed!

    We are here now, tried the levada nova but my fear of heights made me turn back, dizzy, sweaty... this hike was one of our main activities planned. But i'm having second thoughts now. What do you think? Railings help a lot but there were parts with no railings so I don't know.. thanks for the video!

    • @SOSASATSUNRISE
      @SOSASATSUNRISE  11 місяців тому

      There are some parts that might make you weak in the knees. If there is a scary looking part, we put it in the video. Nathan is slightly afraid of heights but didn't have a problem with this hike. He was too tired to care about the ledge 😅 There is also a shorter hike to the summit if interested. Hope this helps!
