    Harold Ramis has worked with Bill Murray several times and found that Murray gets tired and more sarcastic as the shoot goes on. So, he shot the movie in reverse so the sarcastic Phil would appear first, and the nice Phil would appear last.

    This is the movie that invented Time Loops. Every Tv show, movie and game that has a time loop is inspired by this movie. Sometimes to a 2nd or 3rd degree. Absolutely brilliant script.

    One of the best decisions they made was leaving the magic completely unexplained. A modern remake would probably make it explicit what caused the loop to start and why it happened, but this version took that part out before it got to the final draft, giving the main character and his personal journey more room to breathe.

      The screenwriter and director insisted on leaving time loop without explanation and rejected the studio's demand to add it to the film, thereby making it more realistic. Nowdays people in the industry rarely have balls to protect their artistic vision.

    I love this movie. There is a deleted scene that shows Phil's ex-girlfriend putting a spell on him to trap him in a time loop. I think what broke the spell is when he realizes and says, " I don't care what happens tomorrow. I'm happy now." He learned how to care about others and just as important, to love himself. Great movie.

    One of the best, most endearing reactions I’ve seen to this movie. The beautiful writing that showed character growth from despicable jerk to decent man brought a tear to her eye, and in the end she was cheering for him. This is story telling at its finest. I saw a documentary in which Ramis stated that religious scholars, philosophers, and philanthropists discussed the deeper implications of the themes in this story and stated how it expressed so much of man’s journey to finding meaning in life. It has always been my favorite movie, one with great characters, great dialogue, and a little mystery.

    The director Harold Ramis who also played the doctor said that Phil was trapped in the loop for 10 years even though the original plan was to trap him for 10.000 years. According to the website Wolf Gnards, which ran the numbers for how long Phil was trapped and it was 8 years, 8 months and 16 days. Before Ramis died he revised his estamate and said it could have been atleast 10 years but could also have been upto 30 and 40 years.
    The original script contained a final confession by Phil conners telling Rita
    " You want to know whats really amazing? I have been waiting for you every day for 10.000 years. I dream of you every night of my life. You have been my constant weapon against total despair, and know you exist has kept me alive. "

      @MightyDrakeC yeah, see, that's why I think it would be so hard to come up with a number. They're assuming he is a master. For instance, the ice sculpture. His ability to make her i.age out of snow and ice was seriously impressive! But, that doesn't make him a master of sculpting ice if he only practiced sculpting her face over and over and over. He could be great at that, but still not be so good at other designs. Also, 10,000 hours is only 3 years if you practice 8 hours a day. There are 24 hours in a day. So he he could theoretically do 8 hours a day ice sculpting and 8 hours playing piano everyday and become an expert in both in roughly 3 years. Like I said, I have to check out that video because I don't think I'm gonna agree with much lol I'm a bit nit picky hahahaha

    It is said to take around 10 000 hours to master a craft.
    So ice sculpting, piano, plus something else, would take 30 000 hours.
    Considering 10 effective hours a day makes for 3 000 days.
    Lets round up to 3 650 days, making it an easy estimate of 10 years.
    And that is in total focus to just those three things. So more than 10 years for sure.

    "The movie, as everyone knows, is about a man who finds himself living the same day over and over and over again. He is the only person in his world who knows this is happening, and after going through periods of dismay and bitterness, revolt and despair, suicidal self-destruction and cynical recklessness, he begins to do something that is alien to his nature. He begins to learn."
    - Roger Ebert
    Ramis had to push to get the scenes with the dying old man in. He felt that Phil had to learn that though he could help people throughout the day, there were things he could not change. That he was not, in fact, a god.

    Steven Tobolowski (Ned) is a famous character actor who has been in lots of great movies and TV shows. Chris Elliot is currently the most famous for his role as Roland in Schitt's Creek. He is the son of Bob Elliot a comedian and actor most famous for his radio performances as part of the comedy duo Bob and Ray. Chris' daughter Abby Elliot, a cast member of SNL and currently part of the cast of The Bear.
    The movie was very successful on its release in 1993 and has grown in esteem since. Buddhist, Christian, and Jewish scholars have analyzed the film as a religious allegory. Phil could be seen as a Buddha-like figure who has reached the edge of enlightenment who chooses to return to Earth to teach others.
    Some see Phil's transition in light of the (supposed) stages of death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. At one point he thinks that he is a God because he can't even die by his own hand. But he is forced to realize that he hasn't actually beaten death when he is unable to save the old man (though he is able, and willing, to make his last hours warm and comfortable). It is then and only then that he begins to make himself a better person for the sake of others, rather than using others to benefit himself.

    Ironically, Bill hated making this as a comedy. He thought if it was a dark serious movie, he could be up for an Oscar. Harold Ramis, who worked with Bill on Stripes and Ghostbusters, directed the movie. Bill came to hate Ramis while shooting Groundhog. It wasn't until years later, Bill found out through the grapevine that Ramis was dying. He drove to the police station of Ramis's town and asked to be taken to Harold's house. Bill visited everyday until Harold died.

    I've read quite a few theories about how many days Phil relived. The 'popular' number 10,000 (almost 27.5 years) came from director Harold Ramis and seems to be the one most people cling to. That said, there was a whole effort dedicated to how long it would take Phil to learn each of the skills he demonstrates so well and that number came to 12,400 days (almost 34 years). For example, 10 years to become an expert at ice sculpting = 3,650 days, 10.5 years to master playing piano = 3,833 days and 12 years to become fluent in French = 4,380 days.

    • @incredulousdisbelief9841
      @incredulousdisbelief9841 3 дні тому +1

      Ramis has tossed around the numbers from up to 10,000 years back down to around 40 years, which I think is a solid estimate. He wouldn't have started the French lessons until after he became bored of Nancy and the maid (and probably others). Plus it probably took a while to get that bank truck heist down pat. Taking time to get to really know all the townspeople before he started attempting to self delete likely took many more years. 12,400 days doesn't feel like it's enough for everything he accomplished.

    • @RebelCowboysRVs
      @RebelCowboysRVs 3 дні тому

      He didn't have to master French or the piano. He only had to master a few lines and one song. Both are much easier than people think. He could also do several at once. A hour or two playing piano in the morning, an hour or two sculpting in the afternoon, an a French book before bed.

      @@KevyNova Harold Ramis vastly underestimated the time it would take to learn all that stuff so 30 or so years seems more realistic and from what I understand the writer of the original story was heavy into Buddhist principles and based the period on the Buddhist concept of "enlightenment" taking 10,000 years. This was way too long for a movie so Ramis ballparked 10 years but when serious people took a look at it they came up with 33 years.

    While there have been other stories in which the protagonist is stuck in a time loop, those stories usually end the loop after six or seven iterations. I love how this film took it so very far.
    At the point where Phil said he saw the movie “Heidi II” at the theater 100 times, I figure he was 100 months (8+ years) in, since I doubt anyone would wish to see that same movie more than once per 30 days.
    An early draft of the script had Phil keep track of his days by reading one page per day in the public library. The next day he could recognize that page and read the next. By the end, he had read the entire library. Figuring an established town library would have 50 racks of five shelves each, 30 books per shelf and 250 pages per book, that gives 1,875,000 days or 5,133 years. 😮 Mind boggling.

    I’m sure others here have mentioned this. I think the original story was to have it be something like the equivalent of 10,000 years of nothing but Groundhog days but Director Harold Ramis later said that it was closer to 10 years for Phil. One of the few nitpicks I have for the film is the piano teacher saying that Phil is her student. Obviously she is but she shouldn’t know it. Even if he did show up for a lesson that day would she truly believe she taught him how to be a professional quality pianist in just one lesson? I understand that on that last day we are just betting to see him being kind to those he’s grown to care about and she of course deserves her own. One thing. I’d watched this movie since it came out and probably watched a good chunk of the movie. Maybe even 75 times but in the 2010’s Michael Shannon became a popular actor. A few years ago, I was watching this and is the part where he gives the wrestlemania tickets to the newly married couple. And my mind is blown because I actually recognize Michael Shannon whom I’ve seen like I said maybe 75 times before in this movie.
