  • Losing a tooth can be pretty traumatic and the long term effects can go well beyond the mouth. Often times, a chain reaction of bone loss, cracked teeth, and even social anxiety can creep up leading to bigger problems. Luckily there are a few options for replacing a missing tooth. Today Dr. Shaun is going to compare dental bridges and implants and why he prefers one over the other in most instances.

People with implants are complaining about bone loss and rejected screws while people with bridges are crying about shaving and weakening two healthy teeth. You just can't win with dentistry.

My mother was convinced by her dentist to get smaller teeth made in her dentures because she had large, man sized teeth...according to his charts. When she got them and came home she looked 30 years older. If you have ever seen someone with their dentures out, their face is saggy, it wasn't that bad because she had her dentures in, but it was a horrible result. I was a teenager and when I saw her I burst into tears. Needless to say she got them changed back to her correct size. So...if your dentist is an idiot, you could have a saggy face.

I'm 71 years old and had gotten two bridges on both sides of upper jaw due to jaw surgery when I was 56 years old which caused a gap on both sides of upper jaw! Would not recommend Jaw surgery to anyone! And yes your oral surgeon or your dentist sometimes does not explain the whole procedure and any complications that might happen so do your own research as much as possible! My left side bridge has done beautifully for the past 14 years and have not had any problems, the right side from the time he had put it in looked gray on the gum line area so proceeded to get infected the following year and again the year after that so I was rushed into emergency surgery to have a root canal done on the tooth that had been shaved off too far, then the following year had another infection in the root canal tooth so I opted for them to pull it and get a partial because I did not like the thought of a titanium screw going up into my jaw and then becoming infected! Oral surgery, bone grafting, dental implants all have their pros and cons just as he had said, some of us do okay with it and some do not! Weigh the costs! I am now opting for another dental bridge on the side that I had so much trouble originally but shaving off good teeth opposed to a major dental bone graft with general anesthesia, bruising, swelling and pain and a foreign metal screw going up into my jaw, cost, side effects of general anesthesia and pain meds that are all toxic to your body! The bridges sound a lot safer and better to me!

When I had my bridge done almost 15 years ago, I had no idea that "prepping" the teeth involved was actually destroying two perfectly good teeth, I was so mad, in fact every time I think about it, I get mad! Now the same tooth on the other side is loose and needs to be pulled, but I don't have enough bone to support an implant, so I'll simply have it pulled and see how that works, thankfully it's the 2nd to last tooth on upper left, but I can't chew on that side anyway!

The exact same thing happened to me. I had one failed root canal (the crown came off and the tooth chipped in the process) and couldn't be saved. My dentist offered a bridge, I was 22 years old and didn't know I needed to shave down two perfectly healthy teeth. Now I have two missing teeth. I get so angry, the dentist assumed I couldn't afford implants, so he never mentioned that as an option.

@@gazzamorris1378 yes. Titanium alloy has aluminium that effect memory. As for zirconia implant ( non metal), they use zirconia( ceramic,) for implant. But some company mix metal with zirconia! And dentist has to use carbon fiber screw Instead of Titanium screw for zirconia implant. And carbon fiber might have splinter, conducts electricity and can damage lungs.
I give up. Cannot trust anybody anymore. This world is not safe.
I choose bridge. In case i do not like it, i can remove it. For implant , it is hard to remove. I read that the comedies actor Dick van Dike had titanium implant. He felt depressed. After he removed implant, he had no more depression.

Do not be afraid of bone graft or zirconia implant. It look scary on youtube, but in reality, it is easier done than drilling for cavities or filling or root canal. If the oral surgeon is good, he will do bone graft or implant in 15mn. Piece of cake for him.

After 4 months waiting for healing, i will have zirconia abutment and crown.. They will use carcon fiber screw to screw my abutment to the implant. But they will have to use cement to cement my new crown ( tooth) to the abutment. I do not like cement because it is chemical that leak in your blooddtream. No choice.

@@shidesharolkar7488 That all depends on what the condition of the teeth, gums and bone are when it is places as well as habits, risk for decay and overall way the teeth fit together. Some dentists would say a 5-10 year average but that is definitely something your own dental team would need to answer for each patient and their unique situation. Dental pros often compare teeth to automobiles. Wear and tear, maintenance and other factors will determine how long they last ;)

There are a lot of factors that come into play that will determine how long a bridge can last. Dental hygiene habits, diet, occlusion and medications / medical history just to name a few

Yeah, but also no one explains that you have to go on regular check-ups for the implant, too. And that there's a good chance your body rejects it. And that there's a third option, a bridge that is less invasive to the adjacent teeth (adhesive bridge), which is a middle ground and might be a decent option for certain patients... each solution has its pros and cons, I just don't like how the rave now is all about the implants. Obviously they are a good solution, but not for everybody.

@@ModaBulgara Great point. Routine checkups and cleanings are essential for anyone with teeth really and the frequency can be determined case by case as well. Even denture patients should have their mouth and appliance examined on a regular schedule.

Just be aware that in some cases implants may cause future pain and health problem , I’m talking from experience. Talk to your medical doctor first if you have any health problems . I wish I would’ve ☹️ Don’t rely on the dentist cuz he will push the implant first. . Do what is best for you

That's true.... with implants they don't tell you that you have to get them professionally cleaned at least once a year so they don't get bacteria around them and get infected...this also is more money being paid out just to stay healthy.

typically having an implant placed is much more comfortable than having a tooth extracted and the soreness is usually controlled well with an over the counter pain reliever if you need one at all.

Yes I had an implant done and specifically when the post was put in the pain was quite excruciating and the implant ended up failing anyways.
