iPad mini 6 here! and loving the interface so far, is so optimized
Hey, the Scaling is good? Not too small/crammed?
@@BlueHawk80 Is as good as using GarageBand in a small screen, which is very good. Apple really did a grate job making Logic for iPad a touch first DAW.
Exciting updates coming ahead I’m sure. We’re really enjoying the new sample packs that came from apple with this release. Thank Patrick!
Thanks, very helpful for my future planings.
What really surprised me was the the M1 iPad, which is the one I have and was thinking to change it!
Guess I’ll stick with it more.
Thanks for the great video Patrick ❤
Relieved to see the A12 is ok for logic pro , I have the air3 so thanks for the video!
Very good comparison.
I have an ipad with a12/3 gb ram. i've had trouble running logic pro on projects with more than 8 or so tracks.
Watched this video and changed the i/o buffer to 512 and that seems to be helping...
thanks for the tip!
Fantastic for this very well researched video…you are the boss ❤😊
Awesome! That was a great test and I’m glad you did it. Makes me second guess upgrading my iPad 10th Gen to a pro if the pro will eventually not even compare to my MacBook Pro M1. I will mainly just use the iPad as an idea starter anyways. Thanks!
Great work ❤❤❤
Great work - I just have to decide whether I want to sign up to a subscription model...
I'm on a standard 9th Gen M1 and apart from a couple of crashes (which may have been user related), it's been a mostly painless experience, performance wise. I did try importing a random midi file with quite a few tracks, which failed and came up with an out of memory error (every other DAW works fine with the file). It was loading mostly studio instruments but I'd also forgotten that I had that AI Rap Generator running in the background too. So that was hopefully the cause and I'll try again later tonight.
The UI and workflow aren't my favourite but it's still very early days. I plan on using the free month to it's full before deciding for definite but intial thoughts say it's not for me. I can see a lot of other folks really loving it though as it does seem powerful.
I have an iPad Pro m1 with 1TB and 16gb of ram and it threw up a system overload message on a 9 track midi arrangement that I threw a ton of effects on each track. Closed out all my open apps and it worked fine…so it’s very sensitive to memory demands. Also, even though I am enjoying Logic and will continue to use it, it is a major(!!!) fail for me in that they didn’t include score editing, a piano roll is not nearly as efficient at looking at harmonic structure over a large range of notes as a score is. I use the score editor to make decisions about arranging and the piano roll for fine tuning timing on various tracks.
Valuable information thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nice you Patrick. In Cubasis we can enable multi core processing giving us more power. If that happen with Logic Pro it would be interesting
Would've been interesting to see several audio tracks with plugins and effects on them as well for testing the ipads
I do have a iPad Pro with M2 chip. No problems whatsoever. Loving Logic Pro.
This is exactly the test I needed to see. I’ll now go for the 11 inch, M1 Pro. Great video
I have one. it looks like overkill!
I have a M1 pro and ran a full production with heavy AUV3 apps for mixing and had zero issues. Like 30 channels.
God, I love iPads.
The greatest toy ever invented for us musos.
Those results are pretty much in line with what I expected. Having a regular iPad 9th gen, and considering I don't quite see how it would work into my workflow, I think I'll pass on Logic for now and keep using it on the Mac. Would be nice to have but not a necessity for me. And for those who do jump into it, have fun and create your best music !
I got it for my iPad 9th Gen, since I produce exclusively on iPad, and my projects are so complex that my iPad crashes multiple times in ten minutes. Also battery life is terrible when using logic with big projects. It is nice to just work on music on the couch, away from the studio. I can’t use my interface with my guitar without being at the studio obviously though.
Thanks for another great video - some interesting results too! I have found though, that whilst my M1 iPad is fine, my iPad Mini 6th Gen. chokes out on the freebie Manzana project.. 🤔
I tried it on my 8th gen iPad and I was really surprised to see it supports my Akai MPK Mini Mk3 via the camera adapter dongle for iPad. It isn't as customizable as desktop software though
Thanks
My iPad is a 9.7" 6th generation one. Okay for GarageBand, my musical aspirations don't go higher, but who knows.... Santa is coming.... Thanks for doing this test, Patrick!
ipad pro with a a12 bionic chip 2018 doesnt work has overload issues and has a real trouble with the automation. you have to put some vocal tracks on it and automation then the trouble begins,my pro has 256gb. On the m1 air it was good but also crashed at times, same scenario a few plugins then the trouble started, you have to try saving the project then it shows the system overload.
35 tracks and plugins for that amount of output is pretty decent as you’d never run that setup. Good job man.
Whoa!
Hadn't seen that logic demo before. I opened it on my base-ultra (ultra but with only 48-core GPU) and it plays all the tracks unmuted at about 40% cpu accross all the CPU cores, at 128 samples buffer on the internal speaker (don't have my audio interface attached) Mac Studio is really way more than I need haha. Anyway enjoying your videos on the new iPad version, and I love in the real world how well it performs on my mini, super usable and fits in my sling bag with the OP-1 Field. The only thing I hope they add is a midi event list editor for me, and a score editor for others.
Holy #€@&! The Mac Studio with M1 Ultra is a powerhouse! I’m curious how the new announced Mac Pro with M2 Ultra (with extra PCIe slots fully equipped and maxed out version) will run this benchmark 😊l
I wonder if the Logic Pro for iPad will run on a Mac Mini M1/M2? Seems like a great value proposition. Thanks for the tests mate
You can get Logic Pro on Mac for $199.99. You pay it once. Logic Pro on iPad is subscription based. I have Logic Pro on my iMac, MacBook Air and iPad Pro. But I can relate to you. For some it would be handy to get a subscription based Logic Pro on Mac. I like this DAW!
Aside from the subscription thing… My 8th gen ipad will stick to cubasis for a loooong long time,
I'm curious about what sort of bottleneck is differentiating with that benchmark project between the iPad and MacOS. As you say, probably the lack of cores for starters, and maybe the way that memory is handled on each device, even though both use Apple Silicon...I"m just speculating on that. I have an 11" M1 iPad Pro, so good to see that there appears to be no bottlenecking from projects created on the device. I plan to get to know Logic Pro for the iPad over the coming days. Thanks for the demo and the info, Patrick!
I think a fairer test is to set the mac mini to 512 samples as buffer size. I think the main bottleneck could be heat. The mac mini has a fan, heat sinks and more room for heat dissipation. The iPad will give up quick so that the SOC won’t melt. The benchmark used all software instruments and effect and no samples/WAVs so the main load is on the CPU cores.
@@jolondixon2311 Agree.
If u have homepods can u please check that
IF *LOGIC X PRO’s* AUDIO AIRPLAYS TO HOMEPODS!?
And why airplay to homepod doesnt work on garageband??
Unless for recoding from an external synth. It can handle my Korg Kronos. It immediately chucks up sample audio midi errors. Tried everything and nothing makes it work
Using Logic Pro , midjourney , luma fusion , Procreate , GarageBand ❤ running them all in my iPad 9 …and loving every bit of it ❤❤❤
Curious, how is all that going as of recently, & how heavy of a workload can you do on average on Logic Pro & other stuff, it should be identical to the iPad 8 as shown in the video besides stuff like power efficiency & battery?
Wanted to ask that because I plan on getting an iPad 9 as well to make music as a producer, & want to have a preview of what to expect ahead of time.
@@SellaD3 the apps crashes when using more than 6-7 tracks (layers), it’s a bit more ruthless with luma fusion. But I don’t find it irritating at all as it auto saves and reopens the project quickly every time, it’s been more than a year with iPad 9..and I have no complaints for its processor or battery. Having said that, if music making is primary for you then I would recommend used-iPad pro with m1/m2
@@ai.ai.captain I’m still going to go with the iPad 9 for multiple reasons; more affordable while stuff being pretty decent, still has a headphone jack & Touch ID, I’m familiar with the specs because of the fact that my iPhone 11 has the A13 Bionic chip and slightly more RAM & watching this video, & finally the iPad 9 is the beginner iPad to me with being able to learn how to make beats and getting experienced overtime and also understand everything including the limitations. Also I’m extremely humble :)
Well I’m gonna say best of luck to me!
Here’s my whole setup I’m getting after my first car that I call the “Beginner iPad Music Studio”:
• iPad 9 (256GB & WiFi).
• Ailun 2-Kit iPad 9 Screen Protectors.
• Logitech Combo Touch Multi-Case for iPad 9.
• Audio Technica ATH-M50X Studio Headset Bundle.
• Apple Pencil 1.
• 4-Pack Apple Pencil Tips.
@@SellaD3 it’s a killer machine .. you won’t miss any power .. GarageBand is magical on it. All the best for your tracks 👍
I’ve managed to run the Logic Pro benchmark test on my device. I can run 20 tracks without problems. By unmuting track 21, it stops by displaying the overload message. I have an iPad Pro 2020 with A12Z chip and 6GB RAM. When loading up the demo song (with over 80 tracks), the CPU meter is around the first letter and memory around the third letter. Pretty impressive for this old iPad Pro if you ask me!
The same benchmark test in this video? Nice!
@@TheGaragebandGuide Yes! The same benchmark you used in the video! I am surprised how powerful the A12Z chip is, compared to the iPad Mini 6th gen A15 chip.
Are there any different sounds and patches compared to the mac? What I always want is a good piano and orchestral strings but logic doesn’t really cut it. Need native instruments unless anyone has any iOS synth suggestions?!
😃Last night, in the chat on Pete's live session, I suggested that someone should check out LP's performance on different iPads when loaded with tracks. I might have known you'd be quick off the mark. 👍👏 I'm happy with the iPad Mini 6 handling 81 tracks of the demo project easily. I don't recall ever using more than about 32 or so.
What does bother me is that latency with my AirPods Pro 2 makes them unusable, and I don't have EarPods with a USB-C plug or USB headphones, which is very limiting for music production away from my desk.
That Manzana thing needs to be added to by the user. All you have is the accompaniment.
I downloaded it to my iPad Air M1. Can I export tracks from my Air to my iPad mini?
my ipad was to old i punched the air and then cried i still havent recovered

Thanks for covering Logic for iPad so much so far, you’re one of the few channels I’ve seen do so. Everyone else seems to only care about Final Cut 😅
Hi -- I'm a musician and I'm trying to decide between the 11 inch and 13 inch iPad Air 6. I mostly create video productions comprised of voice and acoustic guitar, but sometimes do projects that crank up to about 20 tracks, with submixes. I do like the more portable size of the 11", but am I likely to find the 11" a bit cramped for the more multi track projects?
Planning on buying ipad 10th gen for it, does anyone have advice on 64Gb or 256Gb? I would be travelling for a few months and other usage would be downloading a few movies on it
Thx!
No interest for investing on subscriptions personally, but really appreciate for all of these hard work comparisons! Cured my GAS completely 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks for posting :-)
the ipad pro has different ram depending on hd size 8 or 16 would be nice to know the spec on the tested ipads :-)
I list the specs (model, storage, Ram) of each iPad in the video. I think you missed it.
DONKEY… where’d is my iPad😂.. kidding buddy love the videos keep them coming!!!💪🏽💪🏽
Used the same file that I copied from a 2014 macbook pro on an 8th gen and a brand new 10th gen ipad. Ran perfectly on the 8th gen but crashed the 10th gen.
How did you enable the CPU monitor? I couldn't find it anywhere in settings.
thanks for liking but not replying I guess? found it on my own. disliked for that
Can you see yourself moving completely away from Mac with this release? I still prefer having the larger screen, but I could be tempted as my Logic performance is crap on my MacBook Air.
Really great video... For those guys who have used Logic (desktop) for a long time I think the iPad version is a bit underwhelming. I guess what everyone having a desktop setup would enjoy is doing some editing etc. on the go on their iPad but the midi and audio editing with the pencil in reality simply is not as a nice experience as shown in the promo videos and lots of keyboard shortcuts aren't available... Let's see - maybe future iterations will have improved features.
Sure, but you can always use an iPad with keyboard and mouse if you want, all the same keyboard shortcuts seem to be in iPad version. So you can use keyboard/mouse if you want, use touch interface when more appropriate. Of course, if you're a desktop Logic user I don't know why you'd stop using desktop. Use desktop when appropriate and use iPad version when appropriate.
@@hsitz Unfortunately, that is not true. There is only a very limited amount of (desktop-) standard keyboard shortcuts available and even basic ones (for rewinding and moving forward = "," and "." if you're familiar with the Logic shortcuts) aren't available. It's not different - it's just less pro.
@@mattbantle Thanks for the correction. Seems to me like quite a few are available, certainly many common ones. But there's plenty that's not quite there yet on iPad version that I expect to be added as time goes on, possibly one of the reasons it's licensed on subscription basis, users will certainly be expecting improvements. Will be interesting to see how it develops over next few months, next year, next few years. . . .
Also, I'm wondering what promos you've seen with Apple Pencil being used with Logic Pro? I haven't seen any yet, and I'm mostly part of iPad world where I haven't noticed anyone even talking about using a pencil. A pencil is useful, I"m sure, but Apple seems to have done whatever it could to optimize for use with thick, stubby fingers.
@@hsitz I'm generally very positive when it comes to bringing Logic to iPad and I'm sure future iterations will really improve what has already been a great start. I realise now that my comments may have sounded more negative than I had intended them to be :) The pencil is a great thing but when it comes to editing IMO the accuracy of seeing an actual mouse pointer (as opposed to a re-sizable dot on the iPad) gets faster results. But hey... let's stay tuned - and some of the new/old features will always be up to each and everyone's personal taste! I hope Logic Pro for iPad will turn into a similar success as the desktop version.
I cant download cause my ipad air is 6 generation
My iPad 8th generation having CPU issues sometimes while using Logic pro
Yep, it’s usable but you need to be careful how many tracks/plugins you use.
Is it fair to ask what round-trip latency is for multichannel @16 tracks 24bit/96K tracking and playback?
Commenting bc I want to know too.
Would you recommend this platform for live performances? In the past, I've used a MacBook Pro for soft synths and backing tracks, but I like the smaller footprint of the iPad. That said, Logic Pro isn't designed for live performances like MainStage. I'm on the fence.
You’d be better off looking at AUM if you plan on using your iPad for live performance.
A bubbling puddle of iPad’s😂, well said Patrick, well said!
😂😂😂
how can we add 3rd party plugins. I was hoping to use waves auto tune
You can’t use desktop plugins on an iPad.
To your knowledge, can you “print scores” with Logic Pro for iPad like you can in Logic Pro X?
It does not having scoring capabilities, which is a major fail for me.
@@sibelinof Appreciate your reply 👍🏻
@@sibelinof I'm sure it'll be out at some point especially if we request it
Curious. What if you didn’t want to send the iPad back? They give you a purchase option?
Don’t think so.
@@TheGaragebandGuide shocked!
For me the studio instruments including violin itself crashes
Is there a pitch shifter in Logic Pro on the iPad?
Yes there is
@@jrdetailing915 can you recommend one?
My iPad Pro M1 gets terribly hot
iPad pro 11" 2021 128gb $650 vs iPad mini 2021 256gb $620
For music production, which one and why?
For music production in Logic Pro specifically? The Pro for sure. Apple’s M series chips give much better performance than the A series chip in the Mini.
@@TheGaragebandGuide not specifically, the main tool would be Koala sampler, but would also like to use Logic/Cubasis and some video editing app like Davinci. Thx 🙂
@noodlessoul8356 Then the Mini will be great too. Is there one model you’re particularly attracted to?
I LOVE the form factor of the Mini, I just wish it was a wee bit more powerful.
@@TheGaragebandGuide I'm indeed more attracted to the Mini cause of its form factor, that size seems to be perfect. But on the other hand, I think the 11" one is more powerful, could "age" better due to the processor and is still not that big. Hard to decide as it's just a few dollars difference (I got a 2012 16gb ram MacBook Pro with an ssd btw)...
I’m sad that there’s not iPhone version ..
Also I have a question: when are you gonna review the new GarageBand pack?
I just found the iPad is ridiculous waste of money for music production even with Logic Pro. You don't really have that portability. You have much more portability with a laptop. You can't use the pencil if you don't put it flat over your desk or knees but after a little while all your body aches in pain. If you want to use a MIDI keyboard then things get even more weird, and if you want portability then you need to be attaching dongles for low latency, plus dongles for MIDI, cables for headphones, power banks, and more. Yes, I was happy at least I bought the last iPad Pro with an audio jack, until now that I cannot even run Logic Pro. What a waste of time and money. Good move anyway for bringing great plugins to iOS/iPadOS, like Modartt Pianoteq which did it even before the announcement of Logic Pro for the iPad, and you only pay it once, unlike Logic Pro. Thanks for holding my rant, good video anyway. I wished you had at least compared the performance of your Mac Mini using 512 buffer sample to play on the same field, but anyway, Apple is selling only promises that never get real.
I'm sure somebody will put me in my place here, but can somebody please explain to me how that simple minimal beat is using almost 80 TRACKS?!?!
how much ram on ipad pro 12"9?
8GB on the 128, 256 and 512GB storage models. 16GB on larger storage models.
is the UI decent on the ipad mini?
Yes, though it can be a little fiddly. Pencil/stylus recommended.
@@TheGaragebandGuide Thank you!
but for a real world test you need to tell us if you had other apps open in the background (which would’ve diminished performance capabilities) or if you cleared out all other apps for your test. im betting it makes a big difference
This doesn't really impact performance on iPad OS and iOS.
Is there a difference between the mac vs the ipad logic version?
My iPad Pro2018 isn’t compatible 🥹
If you're talking about the 2018 Pro with the USB C port, it definitely is.
Cant believe a 2019 ipad isn’t compatible
8th generation 10,2 inch iPad freezing in large projects
get a better one then. 8th gen with A12/3GB is becoming quite weak.
Subscription I’m good
moral of the story, most of us will be ok with what we have.
iPad Pro 12.9" bought brand new as the latest model to Apple in late summer 2018, A10X Fusion processor, much much faster processor than the Bionic, cannot RUN Logic Pro for iPad because Apple wants me to buy a new iPad Pro 12.9" for twice the price in less than 5 years, $1,600, cool, but I will just stop using Apple products due to this a many other money leeching Apple black-ops, as well as so many bugs, lack of features and lack of compatibility in the own Apple ecosystem everywhere, no audio jack, and many more things that are constantly screwing me.
❤️🔥🇫🇯❤️🔥🇫🇯❤️🔥🇫🇯❤️🔥🇫🇯❤️🔥
Tried it out, not impressed.
Why not?
@@TheGaragebandGuide probably just a random hater.
Oooooh thanks, this is going to be helpful! In a future video, maybe a more in-depth GUI/scaling comparison? 🥰8.3" vs 11" vs 12.9"
I plan to go for an iPad Pro 11" from 2020 (with A12Z + 6GB Ram). That should do the job for 20-30 tracks with stock synths. The current M1/M2 Pros are too expensive for me and the Air 4/5 lack Quad Speakers, 120Hz, FaceID and the better mics.
Sounds like a good choice!
Oh yeah, a screen size comparison for both Logic and Garageband would be handy!! I also tend for a mid-sized iPad (10.9-11")
@@TheGaragebandGuide yes please do the gui comparison for the different sizes…if the mini’s screen size isn’t too bad would love the portability.
I own an iPad Pro 11” from 2020 with the A12Z chip. I did the benchmark test, and it was able to run 20 tracks (in Patrick’s video, the iPad Mini with A15 chip only played 9 tracks). In real world usage it can handle a lot more than the 20 to 30 tracks you’re assuming. It runs the demo track (80+ tracks and a ton of plug-ins) flawlessly. The CPU and memory meter are very close to the performance of the M1 and M2 iPad Pro. So I think it’s a good choice!
