Hi Mr. Fenner, Just wanted to say thanks for all your videos. Ive been in and around the machining/welding/fab world for a little while now, but I pick a little something up almost every time I watch you. I liked in this Stroken Spline Part 1 when you were taking an O.D. cut towards the chuck using the feed, and while it was on its way back you got the tailstock setup with the centerdrill and went to town. Great timesaver if you know you will be waiting for a while on the machine to feed. Anyway, thanks again. I have plenty of projects, but you inspire me to get off my butt and make it happen.
I got one of these Wonder Wands a couple of weeks ago and have been using it every time I make chips in my shop. I was going to show how great it is in my next video, but now you came along and showed everybody. Damn you, hahaha... !
hi Keith, just wanted to say thank you for all your videos, you are a gentleman and scholar!! you remind me very much of two machinists I've have worked with in my past, truly remarkable people all of you!!!!
I had it beat into my head that you do one step then on to the next, I smiled when you did the center drill while doing a skim cut. Production is the mother, as always great stuff
I was SO looking forward to your next series, Sir. It's been long over due IMO. ;) (Hell, if I were to decide I'd wish for a new series every day! :)) Thank you very much, Mr. Fenner. It's a pleasure seeing you at work and viewing your videos! :) Your fan, Arye.
thank you so much for these video. Although I'm going to college for Biomedical Engineering these metal mill working looks fascinating. Keep posting video your inspiring young engineer like me.
Happy New Year.. I found myself yelling "Reverse ! Put it in reverse!! " ..LOL.. I remember turning a set of inserts back to powder when I ran a 4 inch shell mill backwards a while back.. Ahhh the pretty sparks it made when the holder met 420 stainless at high RPM.. Thanks again for your videos.
Happy new year Keith! Just as I'm about to head out to the shop you post a bunch of videos. I can't help but sit down and watch at least one before I go get er done myself.
My son, who is a farrier, has a similar tool (but different shape) to your wonder wand fpr picking up and collecting old broken, bent horse shoe nails from pretty well any surface and it works brilliantly as well.
Awesome job Keith, always enjoy your videos and have learned a tremendous amount. I felt it necessary to at least buy a hat and I wear it often. I had it on this summer sailing in some real slop from Portland Maine to Camden. My dad was seasick, rare, and in a real knockdown blow I looked up at the reef and it blew overboard. My dad looks at me with that look like you're not going back for that are you? I had to throw in a few hard gybes and with some sort of miracle the hat was still floating and visible. I'm proud to say I got it rather than davey jones... I have a video somewhere of it happening I'll dig it up. Thanks again and keep those videos coming we all appreciate the time and effort you put in.
Cool, this is an interesting series. Interior spline is way more challenging. You must be lucky. Every time I mess up with rotation I chip the tip off the carbide...:-(
That is an insane amount of work. I mean all the fixtures you have to make. So the question I always wanted to ask. Do you ,can you, charge for all the fixture labor? Can you ad some? Probably not all cost of setting up,it would be too much. So what is reasonable???
You're frequently breaking/knocking off the corners on projects, and for good reason. Safety and easier fittament, as I recall. I've wondered why you always seem to use a tool-bit for this, even bothering to swap for a better one! Would it not work as well to just pick up a file, and lightly touch the corner? Would that be too aggressive, or wear the file too much? Obviously would only work on outside corners, I realize.
Keith Is that hydraulic motor drive an " SEW Eurodrive " brand ? I think I've seen a similar one here, but I can't remember what it was on. What's this winch used for ? Five motors in a radial arrangement ? Is there any gearbox in the winch, or only in the drive ? That thing must punch out some hefty torque ! Cheers and happy New Year !
That wonder wand is nice. In one of my videos I show how you can make your own tool demagnetizer using an old microwave transformer in case you happen to magnetize one of your tools.
The make of mine is Wonder-wand in NSW, but on the net I found what looks like a mirror of design; www.toolbarn.com/bessey-mw-1.html/?Shopping%28BSC%29&MW-1&Ny7e_pcrid_11075488984_pkw_product_pmt_b_pdv_c&Shopping%28BSC%29& ;{)-------
В технической школе нас учили, что нельзя удалять стружку сжатым воздухом, потому что мелкие частицы попадают под подвижные части и приводят к повышенному износу и потери точности станка.
+Ryan A Rear side of his cross slide is a hydraulic tracer, see his "working the curves" videos of it in use machining flat belt pulleys for Keith Rucker's J.A. Vance planer/matcher restoration.
Keith; As I try to pick up on the technical terms I hear on your videos, can you please explain the difference between "butt tight" and "non-butt tight", LOL. Happy New Year to you and your family. Regards; Ron Kluwe
I'm sorry I did show it's functions when I got it, in one of the what's in your box, giveaway videos. Anyhow just side the handle back and the mag inside travels to the other side of the collar and the debris falls off. ;{)-------
If my customer could find the exact need on the shelf he would have bought it! They searched and I even gave them and looked myself in the suppliers we all knew and just in the brief page you sent they have no combination straight bore and spline opposite ends. anyhow we all search for on shelf and availability in the time frame needed. Thanks for the comment! ;{)------

woo hoo your back kieth i hope the cold not hitting you too hard chooks look great linds
Keith, congrats on the Maker Studio hook up, the quality and quantity of your content deserves a greater audience.
Excellent work. Great information. Great video. Excellent experience. Thank you for sharing.
I got one of these Wonder Wands a couple of weeks ago and have been using it every time I make chips in my shop. I was going to show how great it is in my next video, but now you came along and showed everybody. Damn you, hahaha... !
Not a machinist my self but always enjoy your vids.Really good stuff
I love coming to these classes to learn a bunch of stuff that I will never use. My skill is chemistry, but I like learning this kind of stuff.
It is so cool: how you can resurrect, fine tune or create your own tooling. Not just "make it work" but you can get it incredibly acccurate!
the sound of that lathe just plain makes me HAPPY!
hi Keith, just wanted to say thank you for all your videos, you are a gentleman and scholar!! you remind me very much of two machinists I've have

Glad to see you back Rick! Mid-Ohio Jim

I love watching the master and his lathe magic.
Thanks Keith
Nice job Keith looks like a interesting project. That was a good trick to help with the chatter.
Happy new year.
Thanks for the videos Keith. Nice camera work, great lighting, you da man. Very interesting project for me to see.
Thanks again,
Richard

I like that wonder wand- that's brilliant.
i have been subbed to you for a couple years, had no idea you were into this kind of stuff, pretty interesting stuff
andrew mac Thanks! I would like to get better equipped myself- It's like having a super power. Besides, that beard is epic!
Great video. Thank you Keith, for sharing your time, and expertise.
Happy new year Keith! Just as I'm about to head out to the shop you post a bunch of videos. I can't help but sit down and watch at least one before I go get er done myself.
great start to the year Keith, thanks for the new set of vids
Caught ya multi-tasking with that center drill... ;)
Thanks for the video Mr. Fenner, Happy New Year to you and your family.Keep on Strokin'

Hi
Kieth
Off to a good start
I remember my cap looking like yours lol
Best
John
How many times you put it through the wash? John, ;{)-------
Keith Fenner
The wash !!!!!
It would be a real shame to spoil its "patina"
Regards
John
Keith,
I'm glad you're back! I've been jonesing!
"That's enough playing with our wonder wand....."
Man, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard THAT.
I'd have 5 cents LOL but I just started playing with mine! ;{)------
Really nice project so far!
I like your "production-style" center-drilling while roughing the shaft - gotta try that out :D
Awesome job Keith, always enjoy your videos and have learned a tremendous amount. I felt it necessary to at least buy a hat and I wear it often. Keith, really enjoy your show and appreciate your expertise. How is your father getting along?
Happy new year Keith!
Thank you for videos!
You could use a solenoid to de-magnetise your tools, used to do that all the time in watchmaking.
You Sir! Are a genius! How does one even think of a relief for the tool when it comes out of a cut?
One BREAKS enough stuff until the thought FINALLY presents itself....lmao
Cool, this is an interesting series. Interior spline is way more challenging.
You must be lucky. Every time I mess up with rotation I chip the tip off the carbide...:-(
The Stroken Spline Part 1
That sweet ol' lathe of yours got some noisy gears ;-)
But a lot quieter in reverse.
That is an insane amount of work. I mean all the fixtures you have to make. So the question I always wanted to ask. Do you ,can you, charge for all the fixture labor? Can you ad some? Probably not all cost of setting up,it would be too much.

Would that be too aggressive, or wear the file too much?
Obviously would only work on outside corners, I realize.
I do grab a file and hit the corners at times but if I can use a bit, it cuts down on the skid marks on the files. ;{)------
@ 6:55 is that backlash in your cross slide that's getting taken up as you tighten the toolpost up, seems like a lot?
Nice video as always!
Yes it is and I will be doing a video on its refurbishment when the time comes! ;{)------
Keith

This winch is used on a work barge and the drive is direct. I'm not sure of the brand, my focus was on the spline shape. ;{)------
That wonder wand is nice. In one of my videos I show how you can make your own tool demagnetizer using an old microwave transformer in case you happen to magnetize one of your tools.
27:15 Did you see the handle move????
Intense vibration cause by chatter. A ghost would be cool though!
Where can I find the magnetic handle you used in the video?
The make of mine is Wonder-wand in NSW, but on the net I found what looks like a mirror of design; www.toolbarn.com/bessey-mw-1.html/?Shopping%28BSC%29&MW-1&Ny7e_pcrid_11075488984_pkw_product_pmt_b_pdv_c&Shopping%28BSC%29& ;{)-------
В технической школе нас учили, что нельзя удалять стружку сжатым воздухом, потому что мелкие частицы попадают под подвижные части и приводят к повышенному износу и потери точности станка.
You are being taught a good practice, keep it up! I brush and wipe before using air, to minimize the damage. ;{)-------
It's only been a couple of weeks, but I was having withdrawl symptoms!
What do you have setup on the other side of the cross-slide?
+Ryan A Rear side of his cross slide is a hydraulic tracer, see his "working the curves" videos of it in use machining flat belt pulleys for Keith Rucker's J.A. Vance planer/matcher restoration.
Keith;

Its exactly 3200 butts according to the video uploaded by vsauce titled "Why Is Your BOTTOM In Your MIDDLE?"
Awesome!
nice video
I like the explanations and it will get in the ballpark to make a practice piece.
Oh yeah, happy new year, i forgot my manners in lieu of the excitement
At fourteen minutes or so when you're using that magnetic wand, I was hoping to see how it worked when you empty the want
I'm sorry I did show it's functions when I got it, in one of the what's in your box, giveaway videos. Anyhow just side the handle back and the mag inside travels to the other side of the collar and the debris falls off. ;{)-------
NEW VIDEO!!! :D
Youre awesome Keith
holy smokes . is there any thing you can;t do ???????
Keith,, Next time go to www.oemdynamics.com.au/DGprod.shtml#splines buy it of the shelf.
Cheers
Richard
