Now I see why the seer told Floki I've been waiting for you for a long time and licked Floki hand I knew he was going to be the next seer that was obvious but I didn't expect for Ubbe and Floki to reconnect in modern day America with the Native Indians
iceland actually had a lot of forest back then, but humans made it a wasteland for their cattle. just one miss representation in the show, understandable though.
If the Hirsts follow history at all, Floki's colony will do exceedingly well after a few initial hardships, because Iceland was a democracy (NOT a communist society) for over 500 years before it was annexed by the Norwegian crown. Although the vegetable crops that could be produced there were limited, they produced fine wool, eider down, salt fish and puffin meat in sufficient quantities that they could trade for anything not actually produced there, the population was more literate than anywhere in Europe (and produced a stunning body of literature known as the sagas) women were allowed to own land and vote in their Thing (an assembly held four times a year to determine legal matters) and while certain practices associated with pre-Christian beliefs (including human sacrifice and the murder of unwanted children) were officially banned by the Thing in 1101 AD, some of the older beliefs continued until they simply died out and there's no account of any witch trial ever taking place in Iceland. In short...when the rest of Europe was embroiled in conflicts both religious and secular, Iceland was left to their own devices, and for the most part they did EXTREMELY well!
Iceland wasn't really a full democracy, the elite could vote.... Witch hunt came late to Iceland but we experienced stupid stuff like that as well... www.nat.is/travelguideeng/icelandic_saga_witchcraft_burnings.htm
Floki's giggle is one of the best parts of the series! I hope he lives somehow. Btw, are you going to review Knightfall? It seems that this show is not that popular, but as a sucker for history, I liked it.
Like King Mckay says then ye is based off a historical figure. Namely (Hrafna-)Flóki Vilgerðarson who is a well known figure in Icelandic history (Hrafn = raven, his nickname was Hrafna-Flóki because of his ravens). He was the first Norseman to deliberately sail to Iceland and, according to Landnámabók (Book of settlements), he gave our country the name that everyone uses today: Ísland (Iceland) ;) There are some parts of Iceland that are named after Flóki and the most commonly known in Iceland is perhaps Flókalundur in Vatnsfjörður, the western part of Iceland.
Floki saying hes going to offer himself is just a test. And they will pass it. They would be lost there without him, and he knows it. I think they will come together eventually and maybe all of them go to Greenland (for the show). There was already 2 deaths. Now comes the peace.
Guys i think you missed the plot, they are already on Greenland. There is a scene when Floki asks Gods why they dont want to show to his people that wonderful land he discovered. That is because Greenland is dry and definitely not for farming like Iceland and you can clearly see the difference in landscape when he is alone and after when he is with group of people. I think writers wanted to highlight the part when he is throwing navigation tool in sea so he can eventually lose the way and accidentally discover Greenland because he didnt know where was the Iceland.
Imagine how strong and healthy they would have had to be I love this show and the really fabulous actors especially the character of floki. But he is living dangerously I hope he stays till the bitter end Or see him in some other show wonderful actor.
they could have build the entire "Floki finds island, then goes back to get people to build a settlement" much better. Ragnar orinialy sailed west in search of new land for the people to settle and Floki was part of this. Floki could remember this, while sitting on the green iceland soil, holding the navigation device in his hands (would have been a pretty epic "flashback" scene with Ragnar in it, btw). Then he sails back, telling people about the new land and that he wants to fulfil his best friends dream by building settlements.... This would have given Floki the storyline that he deserves and the incentive to carry on after Helga's death, giving him purpose. I think, they Floki/Iceland thing is ok, but as a sidestory they could have done a much better job with this.
This was not any cool first half season. I was hopping that, after the departures of Ragnar and King Ecbert and the absence of Rollo, the series would not decline so much in quality, after all, the remaining characters are interesting enough to keep the audience bond to the story and its quality had been increasing exponentially since season 1. But unfortunately it seems the runners, writers and so on are losing the path and not knowing what to do with the gem they have on their hands and bad writing, non sense plot, over focus on Ivar and his supposed invincible smartness and cleverness, making all the other characters, even the most experienced and beloved ones, look dumb and disposable, have plagued this season and made it unpleasing and irritating to watch. I hope all the constructive criticism, not the non-sense praise, reach the show-runner ears and heart and part 2 brings back the glorious days. Otherwise, sadly this will be another show I use to love and will abandon in disbelief, like I did to The Walking Dead.
I thought the first 4 episodes of this season were some of the best in the entire show, and I remember the vast majority of the fanbase also really enjoying them. We shouldn't forget that when judging this season. The fifth episode was hot garbage though, probably one of the few episodes of Vikings I dislike, and everything after that was just okay, I mean I wouldn't compare it to the trash that is TWD but it certainly had a lot of problems. On the whole, it wasn't the worst season, I'd still put it above Season 4A and Season 1, but it was a long way off from the greatness that was Season's 2&3. Just from the plot setup alone though I think 5B will be a big improvement and the Civil War arc in 5A was just something we kinda just had to get through.
Jane Cristina de Oliveira there is only one writer with a clear plan. And with ivar winning the majority of his battles is setting him up as a good antagonist for alfred who is also very clever.
Agreed, glad someone else saw all the flaws. The first 4-6 episodes were pretty good but the last 3-4 were horrible. Nothing made sense, they skipped over things, killed off Aethelwulf in a ridiculous way, made Alfred a bad guy by having him betray his brother (don't get me started on Judith), then introduced Rollo which reversed everything that happened in episodes 7/8. Very disappointed and not sure I'm even looking forward to the second half of the season.
grippingrope99 I hope you are right. But I still think this 5A season was terrible stuff. Ivar, playing a semi-God, fooling even the most experienced ones and coming back alongside king Harald in full power for the last battle after their previous colossal defeat; Bjorn and Halfdan abandoning their so promising and refreshing adventures in the Mediterranean and coming back for non reason; Rollo sending his troops to fight alongside their barely known nephews (even after Hivtsek had called him a "forever betrayer", instead of Lagherta and Bjorn, to whom he was truly bond; the saxons portrayed like complete idiots; the historical inaccuracies (too much this season); the dumb decisions that nobody in real life would have made (like Lagherta staying in open field instead of coming back to her fortified city after the first victory); the complete waste of the great character that should be Bishop Headmund; the time pacing inconsistencies; the Bjorn new wife and her people that apparently came across just to be exterminated 2 episodes later; King Aethelwuf ridiculous dead (by the way, the portrayal given to a pretty good king in real life was offensive through the series, specially in thus season) and prince Aethereld abdication of his right as ruler and self public humiliation in favor of Alfred for no logical reason (another bizarre historical inaccuracy); Floki's and his grumpy followers in Iceland... I could go on and on... Of course this is far from the garbage TWD has sadly become. But I hope seasonal 5b will be far from this disappointing 5a and will be back triumphant to its great form 😉
If you guys study history you will know that Iceland was full of green & Greenland was full of ice. They were the exact opposite and for this people believed that the more north you went the more ice, the more towards central america the ice melts and melts more making it more green. That's why anywhere near the equator it's always hot and moist
Is that all you had to say on the matter the guy died in the season in the most stupidest way possible which included Christian crosses and you’ve got nothing to say about it
I think in s6b they will show us flashbacks of how floki survived i think that there will eventually be a norse god in the cave and it will be harbard rescuing floki i dont think it will happen but it will he interesting
But there was a large population of Walrus in Iceland at the time. A lot of food and vitamin D in the Walrus fat and easy to hunt because they would sunbath on land and could only jump into the sea with the high tide, with low tide you could just take them without a hunt. So Iceland was like a walhalla for the Vikings. They ate them all so they are almost finished today at that location
The whole Iceland saga (in real life) is interesting, mainly because Iceland and Greenland were discovered/settled by outcasts. Eric the Red and Leif Erickson both explored farther to the West than anyone had dreamed of before, and they, according the the sagas, oversold "Greenland."
Why does Iceland look so barren? I thought Iceland was a rich fertile land, which is where the ironic joke of Iceland vs Greenland comes from. Isn’t volcanic soil supposed to be really fertile?
Nice review. I would like to point out a communal society is not the same as communism. I mean communism (at least bolshevik) is not that democratic nor peaceful and surely run by a one leader of one party. Floki society reminds more of a kind of anarchy or cooperativism based society. I say this because I have seen a lot of people reviewing Floki's idea as communism and to me Floki's has more hippie vibes than that. I personally think there is an important difference. Greetings from Bcn and thx for your time.
I see your point but the fact that socialist values are wrapped around cult like religious belief makes it more authoritarian. Even though you don't have a centrist power dictating, the underlining social threat of violence for not being committed to the belief could make things go south real quick. Though I don't see that being explored in the show as we are made to empathize with Floki's followers and dislike his reveals.
I really liked the the first 4 seasons but the show has become a joke. Ivar wearing white makeup???? These are supposed to be vikings, not ridiculous cartoon characters. The show has lost me and many others. It is now meant for 15 year olds not adults
There were a few cultures in Europe (including the Romans, believe it or not) who used war paint, and he appears to have donned that weird makeup for some sort of triumph. The real joke is Lagertha and her pussy posse...there's plenty of references in the sagas and other accounts of the Norse that suggest that they really WERE NOT very tolerant of same sex relationships, and an older woman shacking up with her son's concubine and another girl who's supposed to be a "shield maiden" despite the fact that she's a good 20 lb under a healthy body weight and would probably not have the physical strength to fight with the sort of weapons the Vikings used would NOT be seen as the act of a good leader or warrior, but of a sad old woman with a weak grip on reality!
Introducing Iceland as a storyline in the TV show Vikings, is so very obviously, about giving Lagartha a way out of Norway and become a farmer again. Has nothing to do with the first settlers. Or Flóki, really.
You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not a Northman and you would have a short life as a Viking. Maybe you should take up Yoga! So called primitive men who in part survived on instinct and intuition have lasted much longer than scientific men who are killing our planet quite quickly. You make fun of Floki but his fame was earned. Sinä ansaitset keihään Edgen.
To be fair to Floki Iceland looks BEAUTIFUL. It's like a watercolor painting. It's pretty cool.
If Floki dies this way, I will be so pissed off.
I was surprised by this at first as well, I thought he was going to end up being a seer of some kind :D
If Floki dies, we riot!
@ profound and true.
Now I see why the seer told Floki I've been waiting for you for a long time and licked Floki hand I knew he was going to be the next seer that was obvious but I didn't expect for Ubbe and Floki to reconnect in modern day America with the Native Indians
I live in Iceland and our suicide prevention system is quite alright :( lol.
No Sacrifices or blood Eagles then ?
Only tourists that behave badly do get those punishments ;)
Well if you think that your deluded no country has suicide problem solved scarfaceman77
+clay fada. What?
Floki will not die, he will be the next seer.
He has always been a Seer...

How much litecoin does a Thor symbol cost :D

iceland actually had a lot of forest back then, but humans made it a wasteland for their cattle. just one miss representation in the show, understandable though.
No trees because of all the volcanic rock, just cant grow.
@@billybigdinners7407 without trees, theres erosion. resulting in rock bottom. generally though, volcanic soil is very fertile.

The promo looks alright but I haven't seen any of it yet. I will check it out and get back to you if I like it :D
Great! :)
Obsidius Knightfall was pretty awesome!
Floki can't die! he is too awesome.
Hahaha, if only awesomeness was plot protection cause then Ragnar would be be kicking ass :D
why do you have to bring up ragnar?? That's right in the feels, Right IN THE FEELS :(
I don't think Floki will die in a fire.
I think there will be people burned in episode 5-11, but Lagertha and Floki won't be among them.

Hilarious commentary. Nicely done.

King McKay I must correct you, Floki wants a socialist society not a communist.
yeah that's fair
I just noticed that at 8:04 there is an african woman in the crowd.
Probably someone the vikings captured an earned there freedom.
She may be from that harem that Bjorn raided in Spain.
I could of sworn Vikings went to North Africa and either traded for slaves or took slaves back when Rome was still young.
Edge is in this wow
thanks my fd I really enjoyed ur recap better than all the rest mate.
