    My experience over the last few months has been like yours. Maxamet is just crazy, crazy stuff. I have yet to have to actually sharpen the knife. If it shows a little dulling, I simply strop it on .5 micron diamond loaded leather and it's back whittling hair in no time. Not just back to serviceable sharp, it's back to hair whittling. Absolutely insane steel.

    Just sharpened my Sage 1 Maxamet on my Wicked Edge. I used a 15.5 degree angle. The factory angle was slightly higher. My 100 grit took about 30+ minutes to get a burr. About another 10 minutes to refine the apex. I then progressed up through the 1000 grit diamond stones. I stropped with 5 and 3.5 micron paste on balsa.
    I am hoping to see improved edge retention because it couldn’t reliably shave from a light 20 degree pass on a ceramic and 4 micron strop. My main work I gave it was pruning fine branches on the many bonsai that I own including up to half inch branches on shrubs. It was still a great working edge after it’s workouts with very light honing and stropping but I like to always have my knives shaving sharp.

    Chrono Trigger, nice. I've definitely noticed you have a thing for rpg music (squaresoft RPGs in particular). Im a huge fan myself, and they have some of the best music. Maxamet is crazy stuff, don't own any yet, but what I've seen has certainly impressed me, but S110V is already stupidly difficult to sharpen. I'd be intimidated by something that holds it's edge longer... until I get my KME anyway.

    I believe I got this knife in a raffle on one of the facebook groups I'm in, looked like a worksharp edge on it.
    I just reprofiled it on my KME, little bugger took 2 and a half hours, and 10 of my lapping films to get a passable looking edge, this stuff is next level, makes the K390 I sharpened earlier look like 8Cr13MoV.

    Hearing you recount the wear it put on your grinding belt makes me wonder where the sweet spot is between edge retention and ease of sharpening.
    Impressive as they are, I don't think some of these extremely wear-resistant super steels are for me, as I often love to reprofile blades, not just maintain them. I might max out at ZDP-189... but even that might be wearisome to work on without resorting to power grinding.

    • @CedricAda
      @CedricAda  7 років тому +2

      CSGraves I think with a high tech automated system you'd do okay, but I think it would test the patience of a manual user. I think XHP, S35VN and their ill are in the sweet spot for retention/sharpenability

    I can sharpen my knives decently well on several different sharpening platforms, but when I tried out the work sharp I ended up ruining a couple of knives. I didn't practice on any knife I cared about but after watching a UA-cam tutorial it seemed simple. Well I pretty much grinded the knife down to nothing after just a few passes. Any advice would be nice.

      +Jmuk35 never use the green belt on anything other than an axe or a lawnmover blade. Brown and blue 4 life. Very quick pull throughs, 6 on each side (20 for maxamet) with brown then blue. Watch the tips - it'll eat them.

      Not. Sharpen very easily on diamonds after about 30 minutes of reprofiling with 100grit. I expect that subsequent sharpenings should only take maybe 30 minutes max through a 8 plate progression. Diamonds cut it easily because the steel does not drag or smear across the bevel. The diamonds just abrade the steel away like dust.

    • @HumbertoYi0878
      @HumbertoYi0878 6 років тому

      natsyrt m nah, I think it’s 3% less vanadium than s110v, so it’s easier to sharpen than s110v for sure, should be like m390. Just that low as hell chromium (4.75%) scares me. I’ll wait to see how that plays out for the stains and/or corrosion before I pick one up to replace my s110 v Spyderco or m390 benchmade.

    • @natsyrtm4223
      @natsyrtm4223 6 років тому

      10% cobalt 13% tungsten... thats why i said closer to ceramic... not just the vanadium to think about when those two are in there in that high of amounts. although yea the vanadium carbides are a little bit harder than them. tungsten still has a 9 mohs hardness vanadium around 9.5 s110v only has 0.2% tungsten...

  • @TheOneAndOnlySame
    @TheOneAndOnlySame 7 років тому +3

    Once again: you are not purely testing steels, you are testing steels under specific heat treatment protocols and formed into different blades geometries! As long as these variables aren't known and/or controled, the results are of limited value (limited doesn't mean zero). Especially for the knives that exhibit somewhat close perfs. There's no debate in between the butter knife and the maxamet of course.
