I remember when George VI died. We didn't have a TV. I was 10 and was at home with my mother. The wireless (radio) was probably on the BBC Light Programme on 1500m Long Wave and the announcer, Alvar Liddel, in his very deep voice, said "This is London." My mother quickly sat down looking pale and quietly said "It's another war." Our family had all fortunately survived WW2 but the threat of another terrible war would have been foremost in her mind. The Cold War between the Soviet Union and NATO was grumbling along and I think that the Korean War was taking place. Alvar Liddel then went on to announce that the King had died. I might be wrong, but I think he said "The King is dead. Long live the Queen." I could, even at 10 years old, see actual relief in her (my mother's) face, but then she started crying. It was very rare to see her display that sort of emotion, at least in front of the children. That's probably why my memory of it is so vivid.
Will have to ask my mom what she remembers. Thank you for sharing very interesting. Ps her house was bombed in wwii but they were in back garden shelter and survived. She tells me many stories
"The King is dead, long live the Queen" is to signify the fact there is always a Monarch on the throne, as soon as one dies the role is immediately taken up. It's why the Royal standard never flies at half mast. When the Her Majesty the Queen dies the standard will be lowered wherever she was and immediately raised to full mast at wherever The Prince of Wales is or if they're together it will just stay up.

I've seen things like these where the surviving spouse eventually follows on not too long after. I hope she's getting all the support and love she needs right now from her family.
It's soooo interesting reading these comments! In the US, news interrupting a cable broadcast is really common. If the President has a major speech, if a tragedy or high profile news event happens, if dangerously deadly weather is coming in your area.(i.e. tornado, hurricane). Most interruptions happen early in the afternoon during soap opera time (about 3:00pm EST)😭😭 It's more rare to interrupt primetime (8:00PM EST). Usually that's either a Presidential Address or local news station warning us about weather. Folks call in and fuss at them for interrupting, even when we have a tornado coming at us. 🌪️ 😂😂😭

Scripts and recorded reports are itemised along with exact durations and the order in which they must be run. Most broadcasters in the UK have these blue lights in their studios called OBIT lights. They are designed to alert the media that something like this has happened. When someone at Buckingham presses the button to trigger the alarm, all broadcasters will switch to a certain selection of music and prepare to deliver the news. @@coolenaam Ad hominem fallacy.
I remember when George VI died. We didn't have a TV. I was 10 and was at home with my mother. The wireless (radio) was probably on the BBC Light Programme on 1500m Long Wave and the announcer, Alvar Liddel, in his very deep voice, said "This is London."
My mother quickly sat down looking pale and quietly said "It's another war." Our family had all fortunately survived WW2 but the threat of another terrible war would have been foremost in her mind. The Cold War between the Soviet Union and NATO was grumbling along and I think that the Korean War was taking place.
Alvar Liddel then went on to announce that the King had died. I might be wrong, but I think he said "The King is dead. Long live the Queen."
I could, even at 10 years old, see actual relief in her (my mother's) face, but then she started crying. It was very rare to see her display that sort of emotion, at least in front of the children. That's probably why my memory of it is so vivid.
"The King is dead" etc is traditionally said. It will be said when our Queen passes.
Thank you for sharing this
Will have to ask my mom what she remembers.
You are so lucky as you are able to remember something as shocking as the passing of the King. Specially when you are a kid. Everthing feels more overwhelming somehow

@@katiee3975 I dunno tho. Surely by news reading standards, reporting on a single 99 year old guy who had a very privileged life, dying with access to the best health care in the world is pretty straightforward no? Like surely reporting on drug deaths, suicides, child poverty etc is a lot tougher than this.
Tony H I mean he was royalty, they have a very specific script to follow. Which kind of bigs it up but that's how it's been done for yonks. Can't just 'and Prince Phillip has died May he rest in peace, in other news rhinos are no longer an endangered species' or whatnot.
They have to treat it like it's the most important in the world thing up until his funeral. Priorities are wierd.
Yeah it's harder to report on child abuse but that happens all the time everywhere. A Prince dying once a century? Kind of a rarer thing.
I know this is a big event and the news presenter is doing well of keeping together but I can tell she looks nervous

At one stage, she was almost in tears.
BBC newsreaders rehearse for these exact moments fairly regularly, from what I hear.
But was it really a surprise? He was 99 for god's sake.
In 1993, the Hungarian National Television stopped the broadcasting of Duck Tales to announce the death of the prime minister. It traumatized an entire generation.
But this is very well done. Rest in peace prince Philip
i cant stop thinking about how they just had this presentation and broadcast ready to go... its like someone's job to put together slideshows like this and just wait for people to pass
The BBC has materials and specific procedures prepared for whenever someone in the royal family passes away. Its planned for and rehearsed years in advance. For example when the queen passes, BBC will interrupt programming like this, and all the BBC channels will merge and show the same thing, and have the same broadcast by news anchors wearing black suits and ties or something similar.. point is ya, its all been prepared for and literally rehearsed for a long time.
