What i love so much about it is that how Curlys "death" is how the game uses "show dont tell" She doesn't get shown saving your life, you only see her lifeless body on the floor with her bubble shield protecting you. You as the player have to put the pieces of the puzzle together
The fact that Quote canonically has amnesia makes the meaning of their relationship sweeter because you as the player are trying to get this disabled robot who can't help but act indifferent to whatever is happening due to his malfunctioning programming, so Curly serves both to the player as a tutor, and to Quote as his assisting companion he needs due to his disability affecting how he acts and what perception he has of his surroundings. Curly is basically Quote's literal savior, both figuratively and mentally. Such a masterfully written little game. I always imagined how Quote felt after everything. Poor little guy's gonna have survivor's guilt.
When playing cave story the first time, curly’s death was what pushed me over the edge into getting the bad ending out of despair. That’s how effective of a game companion curly was especially since compared to the other characters in the plot, she acted more as an equal working with you rather than just another person who needed helping.
Curly brace best girl no cap. My first video game crush and a badass. If it wasnt for her, I would ABSOLUTELY NOT go through the hell that is Hell/Blood Stained Sanctuary.
I had some of the exact same feelings in the video with her death, and what made it worse was that it SHOWS her laying there in the core during a credit scene montage after you defeat the doctor in the "good" ending. AFTER the player has had a long time to process and get over it. It felt like a sucker punch to the chest which pushed me to actually look up the best ending.. shits crazy man
That bit with Curly's theme made me tear up. Great video. Made me also think about Oneshot and how the ending of that hits so hard because of how it's done
And the most important thing, she have no Machine Gun at last, she change for the Nemesis, the most stronger weapon at lvl 1, the other side of Polar Star, your nemesis side, your back side.
A common theory is that quote and curly are not actually killer robots, but rather a third party who’s interest is to destroy the crown rather than claim it
I did it for her, no matter how many gauntlets, no matter how tough the challenge, no matter the length. The bubble shield generator on my waist, the Iron bond on my chest, the tow rope on my back and the machine gun in my hand shows it. She’s worth every drop of oil I’ve bled, every spark that I’ve shaved, every dent and every short circuit that I’ve experienced. I can trust her with my life, why shouldn’t she with me? After all, we’re either leaving together, or we’ll die trying
Cave Story is my favorite game of all time, I remember being so upset at Curly’s death as a kid that I made it my mission to get the good ending when I was only like 8 years old. Took me hours! Totally worth it, and since then I’ve even beaten it on hard! (I have got to find better things to do)
Cave Story was one of my first games, and one of my favorites. I could hardly play it, because I was really young and bad at video games, but I loved to watch my brother play through it and finish it. The vibe and story is just immaculate. Really glad to see a Cave Story vid. Great work.
Amazing video. The section about the Core perfectly encapsulates how I felt when I first played it. I'm usually very disconnected when it comes to video games so deaths in them don't affect me much if at all. But Curly was genuinely the first game character I actually felt bad for, it hit me that hard. Also I love the subtle foreshadowing with the Iron Bond, where if you read the description it says Curly is "The only person you would trust your back to." which just seems like a cute phrase when you first read it, but then in hell she is LITERALLY strapped to your back protecting you, I love it. (This bit of foreshadowing was sadly missing in the Nicalis translation)
I mean I was going to agree just with the title alone, but sure, you can take me on an emotional journey for 22 minutes before I agree anyway. That works too!
Man...I thought this video was from years ago because no one plays that game, but I'm glad it's not from 30 years ago or something. Friend, The way you tell the story and the details you provide are simply perfect, I take my hat off to you🤠
Wonderful video. I had already subscribed for the Zelda map videos, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see you've got other good ideas up your sleeve! Makes me wanna play through the game again, it's been a little while.
Thanks a lot! This video was low-key a test to see if/how many people would stick around when I'm not talking about Zelda, lol. Rest assured, I do have other Zelda vids on the horizon that I want to make, but I also didn't want to pigeonhole myself right out the gate. So I'm really glad to see you enjoyed it and appreciate the variety!
Great video! I never actually finished this game when I played it years ago, so it's really cool to see how far this game goes. Great analysis, and a well articulated point- Curly Brace is awesome!
Listened to this at work and started tearing up remembering the running hell theme realization. I remember stumbling into at epiphany on my 40th attempt at beating the last level on my nintendo ds
I sure loving watching videos about games I've never played myself, get reminded to do just that and return afterwards. This video captured the experience very well.
To anyone watching this: Dont watch this video. Play the game, then come back for the video. This game is a emotional wonder and you'll be happy to not have spoiled it
damn im glad i found this on my recommended tab, this video was really really good, Cave Story is my favourite game and im glad you did it justice with this video essay. I hope i someday find a cute robot gf that will have my back if i drown in the core of an island
About Curly's theme... I still think Labyrinth Fight suits her more lol, but Running Hell is a banger either way, I loved your take on that (and the analysis in general with the video)
Why would you make a killer robot line that have the stature of a child? -Smaller hitbox. -Less mass therefore, lighter weight. -Cuz they're cute. Now why would one of these bots be designed with girl aesthetics and wear panties? -Made in Japan

Funny how he mentioned they looked like middle schoolers and also just casually glossed over that you can steal Curly's underwear
Welcome to Japan!
they're also ageless robots, drawn in a style that makes EVERYONE look either 40, 14, or 4, and also not real so who cares?
@@Briskeeen i dont mind it myself, i just found it funny
I have lost my memory and all magical abilities and weapons.
I'm glad I can now legally steal everything from my neighbors' houses.
Thanks VGCHW.
"Mr. Traveler"
Damn, haven't heard anyone call him like that in a while

That's literally in Curly's dialogue, when you give her the mushroom! lol
That's literally canon watt
@@Its_PacFan it is yes, but I didn’t want to be “that guy” that just yells corrections at people
Who let bro cook!!?
Straight facts
5:26 well I'd imagine most people having a little harder time mentally if they had to kill something that looked just like a kid
YO third video is just as good as the first two! Glad to see I didn't subscribe to a dead channel!
Fine, I'll go play cave story.
Man, MAN, i never played this game nor heard about it before, and you made me cry over the death of a character i knew nothing about

It's because Pixel made it impossible to save her if you miss that one stinking jump.

Thank you very much! For such a seminal game in the indie space, not as many people talk about it these days.
you say that like it wasn't already painfully clear that curly brace is best girl

FUN FACT!
FF VII speed runners recently found a glitch that lets you actually 'save' Aerith, and bring her into the rest of the game.
