  • A small high definition camera was attached to front of the pannier tank steam engine running on the day of my visit. The result is a true record of this pretty line as it makes its way from Totnes, through woods and fields, before following the course of the scenic River Dart to Buckfastleigh.

      Hi, glad you enjoyed it, the South Devon Railway is well worth visiting as it really catches the atmosphere of a sleepy GWR branch line and Totnes has a rare traditional high Street. If you do go that way I highly recommend doing the Round Robin from Totnes - open top double-decker bus to Paignton, Dart Valley Railway to Kingswear and river boat back to Totnes - www.welcomefamily.co.uk/A-Day-Trip-in-Devon-on-the-Round-Robin/

    Visited MANY years ago on a BR "Merrymaker" [remember them?] excursion from Brockenhurst, via Southampton, Eastleigh, Romsey, Salisbury, Yeovil Junction, Exeter St David's and Dawlish to Totnes. We had a 47/3 on the front as far as Totnes. Lovely trip, and it's nice to see the branch from the driver's perspective.

      I remember the "Merrymaker" excursions well, didn't always know the destination. The last one I caught started at Brighton and ended up at Chester with optional road coaches to the Zoo or Lever Brothers Soap Works, a great day out. Over the years I have visited the Dart Valley/South Devon Railway a number of times (a friendly welcome is guaranteed). I asked the driver if it was OK to clamp my GoPro the his engine, he smiled and said "OK". He then said "If these things catch on I suppose my engine will be bristling with them".

    The maximum speed is 25 mph. The level crossing gates are all part of re-creating a country branch line, I hope there are no plans to replace them. We are very lucky in the UK to have so many wonderful heritage railways, re-creating all kinds scenes from a bygone age and steam still runs on the main line at express speeds. I think you would find a visit to line worthwhile, the friendly staff and volunteers want you to enjoy their railway, which I find every bit as rewarding as the railway itself

      The first time I visited, the rails were still in place to the original terminus at Ashburton. It has matured into a wonderful recreation of a West Country branch line the the 50's. I have returned many times over the years taking my own children to both the railway and nearby butterfly farm, on one occasion I was able to catch the train into Totnes mainline station. Have you still got the Class 47?

That's three GWR styles not just GWR which came out in 1941.BR black is sooo depressing on such lovely machines , thou LT red is better.

    I believe there was a 5 mph speed limit because tree felling was taking place near the line. This is a re-creation of a typical Great Western Branch line, with local trains meandering about their daily business. The gradients are gentle and the line was not built for speed, so small engines are up to the job. The engines still sound great as they pull away from the stations. Thanks for your comments. Tim.

    Hello Tim! Nice to hear once again a steam locomotive. It is very well adjusted. You hear this immediately. In my youthful days there were still steam trains on our railway line. 10 years later I was then even a station manager on our route from Linz to Summerau. Greetings from the Mühlviertel to UK.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  7 років тому

      Hello Johann, I too remember steam trains on the main line. There were three each day, the rest of the trains were electric. There was an express from Brighton to Exeter and return every day, plus a freight that stopped outside our house every night at 10 o,clock. I didn't take much notice of them at the time, now I really wish I could slip back in time to see them again. You must have good memories from your days as station manager. Next week I will go to the former Yugoslavia to see the last real working steam in Europe. It is nice to hear from you, best wishes from West Sussex, UK.

    Its is our intention to return both 1420 and 4920 to service in the future. They will be in the works after 6412 and 5526. 4920's livery will be decided by the Dumbleton Hall Preservation Society and 1420's, I assume, the SDR association.
    L92 looks alright Maroon, but BR black is her most authentic other livery. Her livery is chosen by her owners, the Worcester Locomotive Society.

    Thank you for your reply. The temporary limits look right to me for that reason given, so without those, just the level crossing. Are they going to put barriers on that eventually? Little locomotives are great, they work well on these small routes I agree - with great sounds! What is the maximum line speed? 30mph at maximum I would have thought, probably more common 25, 20 in places?
    I will travel this route one day, I've done your colleague, Paignton -Kingswear via Churston.

      I can also remember seeing the engines back in my train spotting days, although I never saw one in steam, I wish I'd taken more notice of the London Transport trains, I was too busy chasing Westerns, Warships, Hymeks and the iconic Blue Pullmans on the lines out of Paddington. Everywhere I look in London now I see new or still under construction apartment blocks, the views from the train on entering Victoria, especially crossing the Thames have changed almost beyond recognition.

      Hi, I was unable to find the article, but I did remember the toilet door incident, so I googled that to find a £40,000 fine had been levied for breach of safety regulations. Firstly I was pleased to see the little boy was not hurt, although for the Mum it must have been a very unpleasant experience. If this is the incident, I have not found anything else other than the initial reports in various newspapers, so I am in no position to comment.

    • @orkneyancestor2059
      @orkneyancestor2059 6 років тому

      Tim, If you Google "STEAM RAILWAY FINED £40,000/NEWS/TOTNES TIMES",there is a report of the court proceedings. No one seemed to have asked if the door had been forced...To me the story does not add up.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 років тому

      Hi, that worked and I read the report. The incident was very regrettable and it was fortunate the mother reacted quickly. Clearly a message needed to be sent to the railway and the heritage movement as a whole about their responsibilities, but a large fine is counter productive as it takes money away, instead of directing it where it would have done the most good i.e. paying to replace the toilet floor. Fining a heritage railway is different to fining a company where the fine is paid out of company profits or by the directors. The fine was most likely paid for using money donated to the railway by members of the public believing their donation would be used for the good of the railway. The message the court needed to get across was that the safety of the visiting public should be first and foremost, revisiting the rule book to see if improvements could be made, ensuring all staff and volunteers adhere to the rules would have been a good place to start. The size of the fine certainly sends out a clear message, but for the sake of the railway and all the hard working staff and volunteers, it would be a wise move to quietly reduce it, advising the railway to use the reduction to improve the carriages in regular daily use. I am just glad the little boy is OK as it could have a lot worse, we can only guess at how a door secured by two screws came to open when the little boy pushed it, without seeing the screws and inspecting the condition of the wood they were screwed into , I am in no position to pass comment. The SDR are a responsible organisation with a very good safety record, I have complete confidence they will have learned from this incident and will amended their procedures to ensure everything possible is done to prevent this kind of incident occurring in future.
