Teddy might be a businessman now, but he´ll never become a snob, nor never cease to be a watch enthusiast, keep up the good work dude. Hope you do a new a affordable dress watches soon
OMG, COVID HAS SO CHANGED MY WATCH TASTE! When I was going to work and dressing up every day, my dress watches were my go-to's. NOW, in my grey track suit ever day hahaha, I find myself choosing steel sports, and looking more at steel sports watches. Can't wait to be dressing up again and wearing my dress watches again!
I went through the same thought process being more casual in the last 12 months. We are turning the corner on getting back to normal though! Thanks for watching!!
Love the SBGW259. Simple and elegant with that timeless blue dial. I’m an old-head so dress watches will always be my 1st choice. Leather strap no date/clutter in blue, black or white.
After starting out being all about tool watches, I've gravitated towards dressier sports watches and more casual dress watches. My most worn watches now are a Grand Seiko SBGH269 and a large Cartier Tank Anglaise. A Rolex OP and Nomos Tagente sometimes do weekend duty. A Cartier Santos in one of the larger sizes is likely my next watch I'll save up for. While I definitely do dress more casually, I do still like having a standout dial that looks elegant.
For me, a dress watch is a watch and I wear them even when not "dressed". I love the looks, simplicity and spec of the SBGW259 but 8K is still a bit out of my league. Excellent video, Teddy. Thank you.
I have the sbgk005, which is the same watch essentially but with a beautiful blue dial. I have an avg size wrist and it wears incredible. I absolutely love the quality of Grand Seiko.
I do as well, and agree. My wrist is smaller, so I placed an order for a short strap at the GS boutique in Beverly Hills and was told 4-6 months. . .I played around with a distressed brown leather strap and it looked good, but I think it looks best with the dark blue croc strap.
I think a dress watch is actually one of the pieces which everyone should have. Even if you're an exclusive diver or flieger or field watch collector, there are always occasions that call for something a bit more elegant. I'm just starting to build my collection, but I'm planning to start my dress section with a Tissot Visodate! I'm honestly a big fan of Nomos watches, though, so I hope to add one of those before too long as well.
A Seiko blue dial quartz watch was one of my first purchases when I began my first job. Maybe a blue, or other dial Grand Seiko will be a retirement gift to myself. These are both simply gorgeous. I’m also wearing a Bulova manual dress watch right now, but plan on a Sinn U2 EZM GMT for my next watch. I think all styles have their place if they truly speak to you. To me mechanical watches are a form of functional art.
Just ordered the SBGW259 last week, it arrives in two days! I’ve already bought 3 different straps so I can mix it up a bit with tan, red and cream alligator straps. Every time I purchase a watch, I come back to GS. The value is simply unparalleled.
Great content Teddy! I prefer the dark faced GS for the simple reason that for me, a dress watch is for “dress up” occasions.” You don’t need complications like a power reserve indicator. You won’t be wearing it for days. You most likely won’t be wearing it more than a few hours. I go elegant minimalist on dress watches, but that’s just me.
Great video Teddy, The blue diashock is beautiful. Power reserve and separate second hand complication is too busy for me, when considering a dress watch. For me, the Grand Seiko I’m buying for myself for my 50th birthday (I’m 47) is the SGBN003. Stainless steel, beautiful black dial and gorgeous red/orange GMT hand. Looks better than the equivalent Rolex Explorer. OK, it is a quartz, but you won’t find a more accurate watch that isn’t radio controlled. I really like the Spring Drive SBGN013 or SBGE201, but the power reserve meter kills it for me. I think they should put the reserve meters on the back of the watch case, not on the dial. Just my 2c.
Huge fan of the 007. A challenging design in its asymmetry, but super sophisticated. I've nearly bought it a few times. I do like a dress watch - got a few, but the sad thing is I seldom wear them. Especially the last year, there just are less opportunities. That said, modern dress watches are totally practical. Easily tough enough for most urbanites' day to day. But I'm a Marine Biologist, farmer and forester, so normally I'm in a diver or field watch!
I'd take the sbgk007. My collection is a 40/60 between dress and dive/sports. I wear suits a few days a week so need to have the mix. I definitely used to favour dive watches but love a mix now.
Definitely recommend seeing the blue dial in person. Often looks amazing in the videos but switches between appearing darker and being overcome by glare due to the sunburst dial. I also found that the 007 seemed more silvery/grey than I had seen in videos, but still very appealing. I would go for the 007.
Went in to my local dealer to look at the SBGK007. Once holding it, you can feel the quality of these watches. I had an omega deville in the other hand. Would take the GS every day over the Omega.
Both are sweet but, between the Junghans and Nomos - for me, hands down the Junghans. What would be even better would be the second hand subdial from the Nomos on the Junghans.
I'm often attracted to the beauty of dress watches and have bought a few but they just sit in my drawer collecting dust; I'm just not a suit and tie kind of person. My best crossover are, comically, my super affordable Seiko SUR quartz watches (Silver, Black, and Blue) that have beautiful dials, lines and cases but are also rugged enough for daily wear. They're just about the perfect combination. Any of them (SUR 307, 309, 311), when swapped to a tasteful leather strap, totally pass for an elegant, albeit affordable, dress watch. Back on a steel bracelet and I don't hesitate to wear them as a daily work watch. With deeper pockets I imagine some of the GS heritage and elegance quartz watches would fit the same dual-function for me.
Hello this is my first time leaving a comment. Love your videos. I love Seiko watches. Great value for your money. Earlier today I traded a Captain Cook and a 20 year old Hamilton and bought a pre owned blue dial Grand Seiko GMT quartz. Thank you for the great videos and advice you provide to us your followers.
SBGK007. I think dress watches are the most beautiful and the purest watches. They will be making a comeback when my generation inevitably gets into watches and collecting.
Those Seikos are both beauties. Thank you for the review. I love the blue one. Two things that may be driving the dress watch to become less popular. 1. Covid has in general lowered dress standards with people going into an office much less frequently. It is hard to feel the need to don a beautiful watch when you don't get out of your pajamas for days at a stretch. 2. is the Apple Watch (and other smart watches). I have struggled with this. My Apple Watch is so damn useful that I rarely take it off. I only now wear my mechanical watches for special occasions. It makes me a little sad but I haven't found a solution. Sometimes, I'll put the Apple Watch on my right wrist dial facing in (for fitness tracking and computer unlocking) and my nice watch on the left, but I feel a bit silly wearing two watches. Anyone figured this out?
If you feel the need to have a smart watch with you and a dress watch, then so be It. I see no problem with using two watches, with Very diferent functionalities. One is a pratical piece of technology and the other is pratical jewelry.
Of the two, I like the 007 a bit better. Although generally not a fan of power reserve indicators, it works on the 007. Of my four watches, two are dress and two are divers. One of the dress watches is the GS sbgm221, a fantastic watch at a great price.
I love a good dress watch. I have two in my collection (in the affordable price range lol). One for the everyday office life, and one for more dressed up occasions. I would love to own a Grand Seiko! The SBGA293 is on my list as a milestone purchase!
I have several pure dress watches. I have had one in particular for 20+ years - an Omega DeVille - and for whatever reason, they just don’t get a lot of wrist time. Dressy sports watches usually win out rather than understated elegance.
Make the 007 plain white dial for my ultra dress watch (Tuxedo). The blue dial with the complications for sports to casual dress which would get far more wrist time and thus purchased first. Stellar video
I love that SBGK007. I already have a GS SBGJ219 which I am still a little obsessed with, so I won't be getting another GS just yet, but if I did it would be that SBGK007. Thanks for all the great content Teddy .
I am always impressed with Grand Seiko's finishing. I started off enjoying sports watches but as of late dress watches or casual watch have really been floating on my radar
I mostly own and gravitate towards sports watches, but I own a vintage 61GS, which I absolutely adore. I definitely want to get a modern GS at some point, but my lifestyle doesn't really require me to dress up, so I'm not sure whether I'd get a GS dress watch -- would have to see one of these in person to decide if it's for me, but the smaller case size on these vs the sports models is really appealing.
Both are attractive but beyond my budget. However, if I could afford them, the 007 has my undivided attention. The second hand subdial and power reserve indicator nailed it for me. I wish more watches had second hand subdials. I have a few dress watches. In fact, my first "adult" watch was a Seiko dress watch given to me by my father back in '73 which I still have and it works.
I don't like dress watches & never saw the appeal of Bauhaus style but that Nomos with the Romans is a real beauty - looks like I was wrong. Can't say the GS did owt for me, but that Nomos was a revelation to me - thank you. Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻
I have NOMOS METRO DATUM GANG RESERVE & is easily one of my favourite watches I've ever owned! I'm looking at buying a GS diver SLGA001 - it's gorgeous!....Thank you for your vid!
I’d go with the 007 because of the case and dial design, but this video has me seriously looking at the 259... That dial color is insane! Re the dress watch thing, I have a few in my collection but never wear them, as I never dress suitably. So I just buy sportier (is that a word?) stuff.
Pre COVID I would wear a dress watch to work and when traveling. I would wear a sports watch on the weekends or on holiday. Now I wear a sports watch, pilot, diver, etc. during the week and I feel bad about the dress watches just sitting there. So, I wear dress watches on the weekend. This has also changed the case diameter that I'm most often sporting. I was wearing 40-41mm mostly. Now I'm in the 42-44mm club on most days and anything below 42mm is starting to feel a bit small. Also, great video and great watches as always.
Echo some others. I have been wearing some dress style watches with urban clothing, like vintage looking dials and vintage pieces. Even with leather straps they look awesome with a lot of casual dress. Think Orient vintage style, hamilton, etc.
Very nice review, here, Teddy. That said, I honestly am way more excited by the Grand Seiko with the green dial that showed up in your recent showdown with Kevin O'Leary. That was just "rip my heart of my chest" watch when I saw it. Between these, I'd take the blue. I don't have a dress watch even though I wear jackets and such. I tend to rely on my Tag Heuer 2000 and my Seamaster Planet Ocean on bracelets to go with jackets and suits. I'd love a nice Grand Seiko like the aformentioned one in your video with Kevin for wear with jackets and suits though!
I graduate this may and will be a family nurse practitioner. As a reward to myself I’m struggling between a Rolex rhodium date just or grand seiko white birch or snowflake. Btw I just purchased some leather straps off your site teddy! Looking forward to them!
I prefer the one with the blue dial. The other one looks old fashioned from a design point of view. The housing reminds me of a Hamilton think I matic from the 50 s 60s I own
Love both of these watches Teddy! I would go with the 007 because I'm a sucker for complications, and I love the unique power reserve complication that comes with a GS. I fear I'm a bit late however, as GS prices keep going up and I would be tempted to save a bit more money at this price range and go Cellini. I don't own a Dress watch yet, but I really need one, as I have to be in a suit quite a bit. Your thoughts on the Manero Bucherer Teddy? Those Wick movies made me love that piece, but I don't know if it's quality enough. Great Video as always!
Hi, Teddy. I like to build a small collection of quality watches. I will go for quartz. However I do not like the idea that I have to go to a watch shop often to get a battery change for one of these watches. Can you do a video on how you deal with this. Thank you, I love your videos.
I had to sell several watches back in 2015 when I was made redundant. We had just purchased a house so things were tight. A Longines La Grand De La Classic and a Conquest as well as a 62 Omega Seamaster and my 79 Rolex Oyster Perpetual all had to go. Fortunately I have been working again since 2016 and am looking to add to the collection again. I’m considering purchasing a restored 1970’s King Seiko and spending an additional $1000 on straps for my existing watches. Also kind of toying with the idea of procuring a reverso but not sure how I could explain the purchase to my wife. Teddy, any ideas on a where to get a 19mm padded glossy strap? I have this one watch “Bondix” which is a 1960’s Swiss assembled piece in rose gold that I haven’t worn in years because I can’t find the right strap!. Anyways, yes, will probably get a King Seiko on Chrono 24 (or a tourbillon) 🤔
Such awesome watches! I’d definitely go for the white dial watch. I don’t have a dress watch, closest thing I have is the Sarb035, which for me, serves it purpose. Keep em coming teddy! 👊🏽
Prefer to wear my dress watches but living in Sydney the humidity means it's just more hygienic to wear steel rather than leather. Have to save the dress watches for winter.
A lot of the time, people will refer to the striped movement decorations on Seiko/Grand Seiko watches as "Tokyo stripes" instead of Geneva stripes. I think it fits well, because it's definitely distinctly Seiko when you look at it and a Swiss movement next to each other.
Two very good watches, but I still prefer Spring Drive over their mechanicals. If I am looking for a dress watch in this price range, I would wait for the next 9R31 model.
Dress watches ideally will be thin and have an exhibition case back with a view. That means either manual wind or micro-rotor. I'm looking around for that latter at a not ridiculous price.
So for me dress watches are beautiful aesthetically but it depends on whose wrist it will compliment. My personal taste has always leaned toward sports models, with steel bracelets due to the perks of them lasting practically forever and they dont retain the sweat on your wrist. That's just my humble opinion as to why I dont lean toward dress watches much.
The SBGW259 looks OK though with the narrow bezel I think 36mm would have been better. I don't like the look of the other one at all. I don't have very many opportunities to dress up so I've gravitated towards field watches in 36-38mm.
Good review, but I chuckled when you mentioned a "redundancy" with the "GS" logo and "Grand Seiko" on the dials. You do realize that is a common approach in the watch world, and Audemars Piguet, for example, uses this exact same design with its "AP" and "Audemars Piguet" on all dials. I wonder if anyone ever accused AP of "redundancy."
If I was to get a GS handwound dress watch, I would get the SBGW231. Same movement as the SBGW259, in my opinion it looks more elegant, and is about half the price
Great review Teddy but a little frustrating, in isolation I would consider either watch but if I had to make a choice between the two and have a limited amount of cash (and wrists for that matter) it's not quite as simple. Apart from both being dress watches that's where the similarities end, the finish that GS applies is nigh on peerless at this price point but the aesthetics are almost opposite. The symmetry of the SBGA415 dial is a total contrast to the arguably Picasso-esq dial of the SBGK007 but both work really well. I could go on for ages but is I had to make a choice it would be the titanium SBGA415 by a whisker as I'm a sucker for symmetry. If however one was out of stock I think I could be happy with either.Do I have a dress watch, I have an Omega Globemaster on leather with the blue pie pan dial, would I sell it for one of the GS models? definitely not, but should I come into a shed load of money I certainly would not rule out adding a GS. I forgot to say, I completely agree that some one looking for a dress watch should not rule out a Nomos, I love the honest simplicity but with elegance.
Can a watch have 'timeless' elegance? I would go for the SBGW259 in a heartbeat, if I had that kind of money to throw around ... but it would more or less replicate the looks of my Tissot Gentleman. It's a bit more sophisticated-looking, to be sure - the round case and domed crystal are, in fact timeless - but the price is hard to justify.
As I was watching your video (another great one by the way) I noticed that the crown on the SBGW259 appears to be signed "S" (Seiko). If you know, could you please tell me why they would sign the crown of a Grand Seiko (GS) with an "S"?
More Grand Seiko content Teddy! Can't get enough. Cheers!
No...less!! Some of us are yet to pick one up. So less exposure is better. Keep those prices down, baby.
Teddy might be a businessman now, but he´ll never become a snob, nor never cease to be a watch enthusiast, keep up the good work dude. Hope you do a new a affordable dress watches soon

I feel like this idea that dress watches need to be paired with formal attire is outdated
Man I wish the 253 had the open case back of the 259. That’d be my perfect Grand Seiko dress watch!
For me, a dress watch is a watch and I wear them even when not "dressed". I love the looks, simplicity and spec of the SBGW259 but 8K is still a bit out of my league. Excellent video, Teddy. Thank you.

Yes.This and the sbgy003 are two of the best fitting GS cases I’ve tried on from the brand. The new slgh005 is in same category for automatic variety.
I think a dress watch is actually one of the pieces which everyone should have. Even if you're an exclusive diver or flieger or field watch collector, there are always occasions that call for something a bit more elegant.

Love the 007. I have the SBGW231, beautiful, simple and clean. Less is more.
I have the sbgk005. On a dumbed down strap they make a great casual watch too. The default strap was very high gloss blue and quite thin.
Love dress watches. The beautiful simplicity of the three hand, center seconds, no date SBGW259 really speaks to me.
I understand moving the power Reserve to the back.makes it more of a dress watch but. I liked it in the front....
Just ordered the SBGW259 last week, it arrives in two days! I’ve already bought 3 different straps so I can mix it up a bit with tan, red and cream alligator straps. Every time I purchase a watch, I come back to GS. The value is simply unparalleled.

I'd take the sbgk007. My collection is a 40/60 between dress and dive/sports. I wear suits a few days a week so need to have the mix. I definitely used to favour dive watches but love a mix now.

RIGHT?! Couldn't agree more!
The 259 is absolutely flawlessly beautiful.
Easily my favorite brand. Another top-tier video🙋♀️👍

BTW, dress watches are my daily watch. My core rotation are a Credor Eichi II, Urban Jurgensen 1140L and Cartier Santos Dumont XL.
wow, wth kind of lifestyle do u live.
lol
Wow, a Credor??? 99% of people have no idea what that even is!!!

I would choose SBGW259. Pure and Timeless. But the other one is great also !
I like the Stowa Antea over Junghans and Nomos options. But Teddy doesn’t sell em so no mentions ;)
That Stowa Antea is a beautiful watch.

+1. I think this watch might have looked better with just the GS pin on top, without the accompanying Grand Seiko script.
Exactly! Its such a strange omission.
I love the SBGK007 for it’s simplicity and elegance.
No date, no lume - love it!
I'm all for James Bond model.More modern,better looking.Beautiful.
I would like a combination of both watches. That would be a SBGW253 and that's what I am rocking now! 😎
The housing reminds me of a Hamilton think I matic from the 50 s 60s I own
I am looking for the coolest, dark blue, inky dial What are your suggestions I like H Moser but they are a little beyond my price point

The 007's attempt to balance the dial makes it looks like something is glaringly missing from 6:00. Odd.
I like all kinds of watch types, but I really like dress watches the most. I can wear them as an everyday watch.
Anyways, yes, will probably get a King Seiko on Chrono 24 (or a tourbillon) 🤔
teddy can you review the sbgy007 the new icey blue dial... why does it cost around of $8,300 dlls and what do you think
Love the blue dial SBGW259. Stunning and classic looking watch. Quite pricey for a GS though.
My favorite one is SBGW231.

Isn't the SBGW259 a boutique exclusive?
Interesting pieces. Regards.
The blue dial of these 2 but my GS grail watch, the SBGY003, hope you review it on the Channel.
I don't have very many opportunities to dress up so I've gravitated towards field watches in 36-38mm.
sbgk007 when the watch was release ? someone knows ?
Good review, but I chuckled when you mentioned a "redundancy" with the "GS" logo and "Grand Seiko" on the dials. You do realize that is a common approach in the watch world, and Audemars Piguet, for example, uses this exact same design with its "AP" and "Audemars Piguet" on all dials. I wonder if anyone ever accused AP of "redundancy."
Exactly! What about GP Girard Perregaux?
Teddy, in case you didn't know, the Seiko equivalent of a Côtes de Genève or Geneva stripes finish is called Tokyo Stripes.
GS finishings just blow me awaaaaay!
Still waiting to see someone wearing one. Great looking watches and specs but zero presence.

Blue dial. Simple elegance.
01:32 what's the model number?
Would love to see a yellow gold and black dial version of the Grand Seiko
Like the symetric placement of the power reserve.
I want the thinest automatic watch at a resonable price. Do you know one ?

As far as dress watches go, I’ll take a GS Cherry Blossom. But, from this video, I’ll pick the blue one.
I liked the sbgw259 ... and I don’t own a dress watch.. although my favourite dress watch at the moment is a vacheron fifty six complete calendar.
I wish the SBGK007 was available with the SBGK009 bracelet.
I’m a simple man, I see Grand Seiko, and I click like.
Dress watches look amazing but my wrist is too small for a leather strap to sit properly on. I prefer the rolex jubilee or Cartier santos bracelet.
What store were you at with Mr. O’Leary ?
That was at mayors in Miami!
Thank you for all the the great content
As I was watching your video (another great one by the way) I noticed that the crown on the SBGW259 appears to be signed "S" (Seiko). If you know, could you please tell me why they would sign the crown of a Grand Seiko (GS) with an "S"?
Because it was like this on the original grand seiko first edition.
