It would be a little difficult to separate the petals when they dry on plant. The reason to separate the petals is because sometimes there are worms or insects in between the petals

Can I wash them first before drying them out in the sun? We have roaming cats and I don't know if they might have peed or sprayed on them while the flowers were still attached to the vines.
You can do that but make sure to dry them properly as chances of your dried flowers turning mouldy is high.

Because we dont need it as it doesnt contribute to the blue colouring.
If you purchase dried bluepea flowers, the calyx will just add weight for nothing and makes it more expensive. That is why you see sellers selling with the calyx intact but if you dry them yourself, do remove it as it will give a better result with the blue dye.
is it okay if I use oven when drying?
I’m not sure as you’ll need to use very low heat otherwise you may burn the flowers

You need to dry it completely. But make sure dont dry until they got burn (black).

Hi Zarah. Depending on the intensity of the sun, usually just a day will do. We dont need to dry them till they are burnt brown. They should still be blue with greenish hue when dried 🙂

I saw ur flowers are home-grown. What if I plucked them from outside? Dun I need to wash first? Because after u dried urs, u use them immediately without washing.
No, you cant wash them first. You just dry them and when you need to use, just pour hot water on them and discard the water. Then pour hot water again and use it.

What is shelf life after drying ?
If you keep them in cool and dry place, they can last for a very long time. Years even.

I just get rid of my hundreds dried butterfly pea flowers 😭. Because it gets moldy. I usually air dry it. But i forgot to turn it once in a while..

Oh,the other video shows that never put the flower directly to the heat of sun.
It’s alright to sun dry the flowers. Just several hours and the flowers are nicely dried without being burnt. Dont dry them until they turn dark or blackish. As you can see, mine is still blue with a hint of green there.
