Great tip about temperature. Thank you :-)
If I may add a tiny tip; lettuce spinner is very useful in getting rid of excess water off most herbs. For tiny ones, I line the salad spinner with paper towel.
i also think the salad spinner makes it much faster, trying to dehydrate parsley for the first time today
@Dee M I just used your salad spinner idea today to dry it and it worked great!
That is what I was going to say !! I use my salad spinner for everything, even when I’m rinsing I just use the big bowl with the “colander” inside, give it a good wash and lift out, rinse then put back in and spin ......so handy !!!!
Hey there. I am so very happy I came across this YT video! I've been reading information and watching videos to educate myself on how to dry herbs in my new dehydrator. Thank you so much for a sensible video! No fancy, dancy stuff...just good common sense and straight to the point! I have a bunch of herbs from my garden that I need to dehydrate. I also watched your strawberry jam without pectin video and loved it, too. So I'm a new subscriber and am so excited to watch your videos. Love your personality! Again...thanks!
Love how you let nothing go to waste..some for you, some for broth and some for the pigs :) they are going to love that along with the pumpkins!!
Thank you! This video is right on time. I just received one with a thermostat. Yay. I have oregano, sage, thyme (lemon and english), tarragon, chamomile, rosemary, mint parsley curly and flat leaf, and lemon balm. I hope next season to have marjoram and savory added to the list above. Almost all from seeds...except the chamomile, mint and lemon balm.
What a crop! The dried parsley is so green!
Thank you for this video. I was drying some bay leaves and started at 70 C which is way to high. Well, I followed what the manual said. I was only maybe an hour into dehydrating so I turned down the dial to 35 C/95F. I hope it was not too late. All the best.
I did this last year and am doing it again today. It makes beautiful parsley, thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing this I wondering what I was doing wrong seems I had my dehydrator temperature up to high will know for next time.
Thanks for information!! Didn't know the heat should be so low. Peace and blessings.
Thank you I do have a dehydrator but no temputure gauge...but so far good..I do watch them ..I'm in hopes by next year I will one with temperature gauge..Thanks for great info...
Thank You they sure look nice and bright , good to know
Been binge watching Dehydrating videos because tomorrow I will make my first batch. Thank you for the temperature tip. I was wondering how do I know it has a fan and the other element you mentioned but I algo have a Nesco so I feel more confident. Thank you.
Mrs. V I came across your channel a few days ago and have been watching them every night! I love all of your ideas, you are so talented and oh my you have some yummy recipes! So glad I found you!
I’m thinking about dehydrating some herbs to take as supplements. I’m not quite convinced yet, but I’m going to watch some of your videos. They help a lot.
I am learning so much from you. Thank you. God Bless.
I found you by searching drying herbs;) Thank You for the video!
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I did Rosemary last week and now on to Parsley.....!!!
Glad I found this video. I'm dehydrating some herbs for the first time. I will add that I will gently spin mine before dehydrating. Thank you so much!
That's some gorgeous dried parsley -- much better than some of the greyish dead-looking stuff I've encountered. TFS!
Holey-moley! Now I know why my parsley came out off-color...too high a heat! I learned so much from this video...thank you, Bev...you're DA BOMB!!
Just dried and processed my cheese pumpkin for a small jar of powder. Thanks so much for these informative videos!
Love this, thank you……just on my journey and waiting for my dehydrator to come. 🙏
Yeah! I am first, Great video thank you. I have dried some of my Mint and Rosemary in paper bags, in the airing cupboard this year. I don't have a Dehydrator yet.
Finally got my first dehydrator..YAY!! So I'm going back and reviewing all of your dehydrating videos. I've been dehydrating in my oven on the very lowest setting with the door cracked. I'm so excited to start using my dehydrator.
I'm so glad you mentioned the fan! It makes sense fan to dry food you would need to move air! You need a fan to move air. Here is another tip for drying herbs. Sometimes the dried herbs will move around on the screen because of that wonderful blowing air. you can take another mesh screen and set it on top of the herbs it won't seem 2 slow down the dehydration process. forgive the poor punctuation and stuff I'm doing voice to text and it doesn't seem to be doing it right at the moment
we dried some herbs from the garden this year, the plants were from our local supermarket and the didn't water them very well and I bought them and they live happy on our top step ready for next year. .Kim...
Thanks for these tips I was very happy with my results this time around 😁
Love your videos! I found a huge bag for $1at my salvage grocery store and I'm going to dehydrate. Thanks!
Mrs. V., were you peeking through our window yesterday? Cause my friend and I were talking about drying herbs....and here you are! LOL... Hope you will do more on herb drying...we love cooking with them. Thank you. (:
Great video. The only thing I disagree with is crumbling them before storing them. You should keep herbs whole leaf till you actually use them. That way they retain most of their aroma.
Thanks I did not know about the temperature to use... Huggs and Blessings
Thank you for this helpful video! Just what I was looking for to get started drying herbs.
Thankyou. Im doing sweet marjoram and italian parsley, right now.
OK! You've convinced me! I'm getting a dehydrator. (I have a lovely oregano and it produces so much year round.) Thank you!!!
well my dehydrator does not have a heat control knob . i did all my chives and they still came out great and so did my orange zest . i guess i better get a better one . thanks bev for the great info . have a great rest of the week . hugs from michigan
temperature gauge is important if you are doing things other than jerky..the lower the temp..the more nutritious, colourful and tasty your herbs are
Excellent video. Will U bake your bone's 4 bone broth then boil them? That's what my mother-in-law did it
Thank you so much for this helpful video!
I could have used this video a week ago LOL! I managed to get my parsley and all dehydrated ok but I was hoping you'd have a video up
Planted parsley and it grew way out of control now we have a ton. I'm about to dehydrate and share it with my mom.
I'm new to preserving herbs. Have my first batch in the dehydrator. I can't believe how beautiful the parsley came out. The color is amazing!
Question for you.. are you concerned that using the dehydrator in the pantry will increase the temperature of the room? I have mine in the dining room, and I can't say I've noticed any heat coming off of it.
Mrs Volfie thank you for this information I finally got a dehydrator and cant wait to get started. Question, did you notice an increase in your electric bill since it is on for 12 hours? If so by how much if you dont mind sharing this information.
see again I learned a valuable tidbit about drying herbs.
50 # OF CABBAGE BOUGHT AND SHREDDING TODAY FOR KRAUT TODAY. I HAD TO BUY MORE I ONLY HAVE 12 QUARTS OF KRAUT ON THE SHELF. COULDN'T PASS IT UP AT .33 A POUND. WISH ME LUCK. GOD BLESS
i bet your kitchen smells amazing after all those herbs!!
This is the only way I "dry" mine. Looks and taste fresh every time I use it! I keep a big Quart jar on my counter full of parsley because we love it so much lol
Thanks for the short, to the point video!! Great info about the tempature! I have one question; how long will it last (to maintain maximum freshness) in a mason jar once dried with this method??
I have a dehydrator but it is a older one that does have a fan but no thermostat , how can I do rosemary???? Wonderful video thanks for the info :-) Have a great day :-)
Great tutorial Bev, I would've kept more of the plant I think, I love parsley and when I make parsley sauce? It ends up properly green.lol. Would go great over your home cured gammon slices.
Thanks. Learned a lot. Looks great.
Thanks so much for your video and help
Thank you for the awesome video!!
Hi Bev, love the info, can you dehydrate anything with your machine? Thank you for sharing and God bless you both. Hugs.
Do you know if for chives is it best to get them in the Spring Or to cut them in the Fall? I am talking about the wild chives. Love the tip on 95% Thank you.. I will not forget that part. Loved the color of your parsley. Thank you Big Hugs.. Ang :)
Hi, 6 years later haha! Harvest before it blooms or in the spring. More energy/nutrients remain in the stem. And no energy goes into seeds etc.
Do you notice any flavor difference between dehydrating the herb and air drying it (like by hanging the herbs)?
Can you please do a demo on goji berries dehydration ? How do you get that dried red goji color as what you normally buy from a packed dried goji berries ? Thanks.
Thank you for the quick but informative Vid!!!!
What model NESCO are you using please?
Hey, Bev!
Great tutorial, as always!
Question: Did you make the dehydrator tray I see in your video? If so, which plastic canvas did you use? Been reading that some plastic sheets aren't food grade. But, at such a low temp as >95°, the plastic shouldn't be harmful, so I'm not worried.
Hugs!
cornish parsley pie , yum yum , its just eggs and milk and salt pepper and loads of parsley , with a lid , my mum used to make it.
Thank you for the vídeo. From Brasil...
I'll try do dry neem leaves.
I'll post later If It is ok.
the lowest my dehydrator goes is 100 degrees. I hope I can do a good job with my herbs. Thank you sor sharing.
Would the "herbs" recommendation include sliced or minced/chopped garlic? Or was the lower temp just for leafy things?
Some great tips! Thanks.
The mystery of my ugly chives solved! Thank You!
I hope you will be able to answer this since this is from 2016. When you are ready to use, do you need to put this in water like the vegetable?
Cool video -- thanks for posting...
I love the taste of stems and twigs in my tea...
Do you find that the humidity in your house affects drying time or temperature?
Hello, what model is your food dehydrator? It looks like the perfect size for me. Love your videos. Thanks
Thank you Bev.
Thank you!
Just watched your video AFTER I watched this vid. Sad bc I just bought my 1st dehydrator today only to discover it has not temp control and the herbs I'm wanting to use are not recommended bc its too hot. I'm not drying the herbs to ingest but rather to oil infuse to make my own salves, etc.
Wow look at that parsley!
Why did you bring the whole root ball inside instead of cutting the tops off with clippers or scissors?
I dry my herbs like that as well Bev, I have so much lols
Mmmmmm...I can almost smell it from here. What kind of dehydrator do you use?
I know this is an old video, but could you do an update on dos and don'ts for dehydrating herbs in general. I would like to dehydrate as many as I can, so a good 101 basics would be great, maybe a herb series.
Hi, is there a way to do it without the thermostat?
Thank you.
Thank you
this was awesome
What foods do you dehydrate that need tray repositioning more often?
How the hell did your parsley gey this big?! I have trouble keeping it alive! Your tips would be much appreciated!
OK soooo what about the other herbs - those also at 95 degrees ? I have several types of basil and I also have fennel, never grew fennel before so not quite sure what to do with it ? Oh yeah I guess I could google that hahaha
I know this is old but why is your unit burnt on the side
What if your dehydrator doesnt have a heat setting?
So why didn’t you leave the root ball and just cut off all the parsley at like an inch because it is a perennial so it will keep coming back, but you just wasted all those roots
Thanks.
I have been dehydrating basil leaves at 95 degrees in the same dehydrator that you have and after 48 hours they are not drisp! What am I doing wrong? They were absolutely dry when I put them in.
@@alanandjanetpohl4043
I heard if you don't cut off the stems completely they might not dry.
@@lorimcmanus5657 I had no idea! Thank you so much, Lori. I will try another batch.
@@alanandjanetpohl4043
I was getting ready to dry some of my basil tonight. Saw that video right before I saw your question lol. Hope thats what it is.
Some herbs do not retain their flavor when dehydrated. Parsley is one of them.
95 for how long?
Usually around 12 hours or so but you can check sooner and see if it's dry enough for you.
Dehydrating your own herbs is so much better than store bought. Bonus, it actually tastes like the fresh herb! Go figure! Lol
Those must be some tasty pigs!
She has a burn mark in dehydrator 🤣
Thank you!
Good to know about the temperature. By the way, that was an excellent shot from your pantry. Love you!!
